What's the difference between someone who finds success and someone who just habitually chases that next big dream?
I've asked myself this question almost every day in my twenty-three year writing career, oftentimes while banging my head against the wall repeatedly. A few years ago I finally found the answer...A Mentor.
Rewind to 2012. I was working myself into the ground in a stressful corporate job and felt completely trapped. I was stuck in cubicle for sixty (plus) hours each week and working on my first novel for another twenty or more hours a week. It was like working more than two full time jobs. Whatever time was left was spent trying to somehow maintain relationships with my spouse, family, and friends. Maintaining life balance was a losing battle because I was so stressed I wasn’t sleeping.
Still, I had a dream that gave me hope. I was convinced my novel would free me from this living hell. I published the book in late 2012 and sales took off immediately, four and five star reviews poured in. The plan appeared to be working. Then after a few months, sales completely flat lined.
I was crushed. I thought to myself, This is your life. You're just not good enough, writing is just a hobby for you. You'd better just put on your big boy pants and deal with it.
A few months later I found an unassuming book called, Choose Yourself by James Altucher. I read the entire book in one sitting on a flight home to Ohio. I had read a plethora of self-help and business books prior to this but none resonated quite like this one.
Choose Yourself addressed nearly everything I was going through at that moment. It was like James wrote this book specifically for me.
I immediately began to put into practice things James suggested in Choose Yourself like:
- writing down ten ideas every day;
- eating well, sleeping 8 hours a day;
- eliminating as much negativity from life as possible;
- reading (from a book) every day; and
- practicing gratitude incessantly.
When I began this daily practice my life started to improve dramatically. The positive changes were addictive and I wanted more. I subscribed to James' podcast on iTunes and would spend my lunch hour at work listening to it. His guests are some of the most interesting people on the planet and they shared practical tips that can be integrated into your life. Through listening the podcast it wasn't just like having one virtual mentor but several.
Thanks to James’ virtual mentorship and a few years of intense work on myself 2016 brought personal success larger than I ever imagined.
James just published a new book, Reinvent Yourself.
This book will teach you ways to master the art of reinvention in your own life. In the coming years it will be imperative to master this skill of reinvention to survive and prosper through times of unprecedented change.
I hope my personal narrative proves that it’s never too late to change your life. Life will never be perfect and none of us can foretell the future. Despite this, you have the power within you to be the best version of yourself and drastically improve the quality of your life.
The truth is only one person in the world can do the work to get you there -- and that’s YOU. But great mentors can give you a shortcut and save you from wasting valuable time making mistakes.
Would you like a free copy of James’ new book, Reinvent Yourself?
If so, share one way you’d like to reinvent yourself in the next year in the comments below. Five commenters will be chosen randomly at the time of post closing to receive a free copy of James’ new book Reinvent Yourself (the books are being graciously donated by @outreach.)
Have a wonderful weekend Steemians! Never forget...the more you live with your heart, the richer you are.

As a recent cancer surviver and currently healing from reconstructive surgery I have been doing some re-evaluating of what's really important in life. Reinventing myself will be the first step, because no one can go through this and stay the same. Thank you for the encouragement!
Congratulations on beating it, @bitsy! You've won a free book. Please email me with your name and address (ericvancewalton@gmail.com) to claim your prize!
Thank you so much!
I would like to reinvent myself as a musician who travels the world. I'm already a musician and I have lived the life of a traveling salesman and know that I like the lifestyle. Now, I would like to put it all together and play music on all the continents of this planet, even Antarctica.
Wonderful! I bet you have some great stories to tell from your adventures! I wish you luck in attaining your goal.
@transhuman - please email me your shipping information at ericvancewalton@gmail.com. You've won one of the free copies. Thanks!
Thank you very much! I emailed my shipping address to you and can't wait to read it. I've been aware of the rapid changes occurring in the modern world for some time and I realize my need to adapt to what's going on. Reinventing myself has become a challenging but necessary task in my situation.
HI from Mexico Eric. I don't want to reinvent my self. I just want to be ME again. Once in a while I rise from my own ashes and reach the top of the world and make magic happen.. Now its time to do it again. I need it. I may be in a down spiral and i need to take control of Me again. Im answer not for the book giveaway. I'm trying me make a commitment with my self to gain this battle. Cheers
Hello @dagoluna! We definitely have the power to change our situations. I wish you the best of luck!
I bought a copy of Reinvent Yourself and read it in a weekend, taking time to make notes and jot down some of his tips. Went to work the next morning with a sense of purpose, that purpose being that I am now committed to leaving my dead-end cubicle job by the end of this year. Within two weeks I had applied for and accepted a freelance marketing position that is taking up a huge chunk of my weekends and evenings--but it's generating an extra 3 or 4 hundred dollars EVERY week. I now realize that I could afford to go freelance full-time, working from my home, if I were to pick up another 3 or 4 similar freelance clients. With all of the extra income I'll bring in this year, I can retire from the rat race by Christmas and work on only those projects I love. I love Altucher's new book and can't recommend it enough. I read the Power of No (great book) but haven't read Choose Yourself. Will remedy that oversight right away!
I really love to hear stories like this. I admire your courage, @florentina! Best of luck in reaching your goals!
In some ways, James was a mentor of so many of us. I too, followed some of his wonderful advice. :)
What a great post @ericvancewalton! Thank you for sharing.
Me too. :) I discovered his blog a couple of years ago in college. And it was a breath of fresh air to see someone having unique opinions and pieces of advice.
@erinvancewalton, I will like have a copy too. Is it an ebook? Its been difficult getting it on Amazon cos of my location and the availability of only a physical copy.
I can pay for mine and that of someone else if that would make it easy. 😁😂😑. Thanks so much.
Hey, @infovore! We're giving away physical copies. Where are you located? I'm sure we could get you a copy.
Yes, so many "Choose Yourselfers" are here on Steemit! It's amazing how so many of them have flourished on this platform too...another testament to the value of what James teaches. Thanks for your comment!
I would like to "reinvent myself".
By learning how to code.
I also would like to change my current lifestyle completely and spend more time traveling.
Excellent post! I love Your work and the work of James Altucher.
Thank you. Coding is a great skill to have now! I share your goal of travel. The digital nomad lifestyle seems pretty appealing. I appreciate your comment!
Oh wow, that sounds magical! Thanks for your insight and the great recommendation.
I'm currently writing my very first book and therefore have that feeling that I am reinventing myself every day ;)
That's my favorite quote from James Altucher in that context:
'Publishing a book is not just putting your thoughts on a blog post. It’s an event. It shows your best curated thoughts and it shows customers, clients, investors, friends and lovers what the most important things on your mind are right now.'
Upped and resteemed
Love that quote @surfermarly
Me too. : )
Kudos to you for starting your book! I love that quote, James is right...writing a book IS an event. For me, it's the closest thing I can imagine to giving birth. It's like ushering a living breathing thing out into the world. Best of luck with your writing and I can't wait to read your book. Thanks!
I want to go beyond my capacity, I want to go beyond my limit and soar.
“Anything beyond your capacity will necessarily change your capacity, because so long as everything is within your limits, you don't know what is beyond them. And everything concerning God and God-realisation is beyond limit. So in this way great suffering and being plagued with terrible problems are beneficial.”
[Told by Meher Baba to the mayor of Karachi, Jamshed Mehta, 1931. Lord Meher 4: 1374]
Soar on, @lakshmi! Stretching beyond perceived limits is vital to our evolution.
There are some seriously good words of wisdom in there! Thanks again for sharing this article with us as it feels more like healing, great potent medicine than what I mostly come across here. Maybe it is also underlining the necessity for such post to get traction and spread all over the net!? ;) It surely would be very worthwhile I believe, especially with such quality backing it up.
Re-inventing myself relies on the idea that there's a so-called self and more often than otherwise tricks the brain in thinking so. By eliminating this thought from the process or at least putting it between parenthesis, the moment becomes the maker and the flow of what is rises to the surface of your being continuously shaping and gradually eroding the so-called self toward the essence of what we all are and of what everything is. Pure awareness, spaciousness, consciousness arise toward omnipresence, omniscience and omnipotence. So be it bliss, so be it. Every moments contains this potential and has the inherent quality of directing us toward consciousness. Life provides for itself as you provide for it.
All for one and one for all! Blessings, blissing!!! Namaste :)
Thank you so much, my friend! Your suggestion is valuable, working to become more selfless really does improve all other aspects of our physical existence. Namaste!
Good post; its always good to examine your life and make tune ups as needed.
I would like to give back to the community more this year. I am so thankful and feeling lucky for the early success I have had here. I am here every day, reading and UP voting many posts. But I want to do more. I'm planning some giveaways and other things. Its just a matter of finding time and setting priorities!
Thank you! I'm thankful for that early success as well @kenny-crane. Your wish to give back is very commendable. Curation and mentoring are really effective ways to give back, the giveaways are a lot of fun to dream up too. It really forces you to exercise those marketing muscles!
Aptly put.
I think like yourself I've travelled down the rabbit hole for a little too long whilst disregarding other aspects of my life. For you it was writing a novel, for me it was learning how to become a trader.
I don't necessarily need to reinvent myself, just rekindle other areas of my life and refocus on them. I think solo travelling will help with that for maybe a couple months this year. Always a blank slate when travelling, out of your comfort zone.
Thanks for this post, always nice to get a few nudges here and there. :)
Thank you, @wingz. What was so unbelievable to me was how deep you can go down that rabbit hole before you even realize. I'm glad trading was your escape. Solo traveling is a excellent idea. It really forces you to be resourceful and come out of your shell. What would be your top 3 travel destinations?
Well for me trading is the rabbit hole. I didn't quite realise the committment when I threw myself into it 100%.
I think number one would be somewhere in Argentina, learn some Spanish and salsa or something. Maybe invest in a few businesses.
Japan, for all the technology and their gaming bar crawls.
Finally Belgium, but as more of a visit rather than extended travel. Love the beers :)
I bet trading does take a lot of time. I've dabbled in it the last few months and have done okay but have a lot to learn! Japan would be amazing. I always wanted to see Kyoto. It sounds like you have some exciting goals!
Absolutely great advice. I like James' podcast also. Whenever I get stuck in a rut, it's time to travel, read a good book, or maybe just go on a long run or hike. I love the suggestion about eliminating negativity also.
Thanks! I'm pretty much addicted to the podcasts. I listen to them during my lunch and when I'm at the gym doing cardio. All of those things you mention are great ways to get out of a rut. I will jump on my bike sometimes if I have writer's block or take our dog for a walk...that always works.
I've been following James for a while now - if you are really interested in this sort of thing he has a great podcast too in addition to the book.
Yes, the podcasts are great!
I want to reinvent myself starting with daylight living/sleeping by night. To transform the night owl into an early bird.
A lot of people have this problem. It makes it tough to function. In what ways will you approach switching your schedule around?
Going at bed early, getting away from the computer late in the evening, and/or forcing myself to get up at the time in the morning I set myself to awake. All of this in order to push myself into being tired when going to sleep.
I love these kinds of books! Food for thought. I want to reinvent myself by putting myself out there more. My thoughts and my art, I want to share more with media. Writing down 10 ideas a day sounds like a great exercise!
@edgarstudio - Please email me at ericvancewalton@gmail.com with your shipping information to claim your prize of a free book!
Wow thank You so much @ericvancewalton! I am really excited about the win and most importantly about this book! I appreciate you spreading the knowledge! I will be sure to let you know my thoughts on the book.
I would highly suggest trying the 10 ideas a day. It opens up your imagination to many great and unforeseen things and really changes the way you think. Best of luck in your journey this year! Social media, done right, can be amazingly effective!
Every year I set five goals for myself.
One of the goals I'm most excited about this year is talking to a random stranger every day. Something more than "Hey, how's it going?"
I'd like to reinvent myself by becoming the guy who starts a conversation with someone I don't know in an elevator, instead of standing in silence while I wait.
This is awesome! I have a good friend that I travel with that's an extreme extrovert. Just by being around him I notice myself becoming more open and willing to talk to strangers. After a few days being back in my routine I slip back into my introverted ways. Are you an introvert by nature? Great comment, Wade.
I'm similar to you: it depends a bit on who I'm around, but I'd say I'm 50% introverted and 50% extroverted.
I'm the exact same, it depends on the company, the vibe, and my mood.
I take any recommendation from you seriously, I will go search out the work of this fella asap!
Thanks, my friend! I hope it clicks with you like it did with me. Be sure to check out the podcasts on iTunes as well. I like this because I can listen while I do other things and can be easily absorbed.
Thank you for the tip, it sounds like the perfect accompaniment to painting time.
You're welcome!
That was a very inspiring story. It was only recently that I started in the writing world thanks to Steemit and as you said, sometimes life can be stressful due to all the variables and sometimes it can seem hopeful.
We all need someone or something to look up to in this journey of life. James seems like someone I can really look up to for guidance. I will be sure to check out work. Thanks for this :)
You're welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
This is the first time I've heard of James Altucher, I'll take a look at his writing
His writing is really inspirational. He's based in NYC so you might run into him in a cafe while you're there. He writes a lot in coffee shops.
he looks just like a New Yorker :-))
He definitely is. : )
Hi! We hope to discuss your post today on our podcast!
Feel free to join us at 3pm CST / 9pm GMT at http://steemittalkpodcast.com!
Great...I'll most definitely try to join in at 3pm CST! Thank you for featuring my post! I know James' work would really benefit a lot of fellow Steemians.
I really enjoy how James uses his calamities to teach valuable lessons.
I would like to reinvent myself and become an artists that releases a work in 2017 that comes Eastern and Western aesthics.
I think this would require a lot of study up front into new artists and give me a chance to have fun with how much influence I allow to be in this new work.
Definitely, it's good to see someone at his level be totally honest about things that haven't quite worked out.
Best of luck on the new goal, it'll be interesting to see what you create. Thank you very much for the copy of your poetry book, Thought & Color! I've read a few poems so far and they're very good.
I'm going to bring the book along on a trip in a few weeks and will read it all. Is this available for sale online? If so, feel free to post a link in the comments here.
The book link is here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1540841421/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1482113041&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=thought+%26+color+ruben+alexander&dpPl=1&dpID=51ELiQSCkAL&ref=plSrch
@rubenalexander, please email me your shipping address at ericvancewalton@gmail.com. You've won a free copy of Reinvent Yourself. Thanks!
Huzzah!! I will send that over tonight.
I have spent my entire career in the corporate world 70 plus hours a week thinking that getting to the top would change everything it did it was worse not only the hours but the stress and babysitting I really need to reinvent my self
This is exactly the thing I discovered and why I worked like h@ll to kick my writing career into high gear. It's so sad what they subject people to. What field are you in? Do you have any interests or hobbies you could turn into an income stream?
It is hard to have any hobbies when working hours like that I have 5 children I have been in the automotive industry
Totally understandable! Don't give up hope! You're getting a book, by the way. Can you email your shipping address to - ericvancewalton@gmail.com?
I am a very optimistic person I have the drive to get out I just need to replace my income to do it I will email you thanks for the motovation
