Hypnotized (An Original Poem)

in #story7 years ago (edited)

Make a joyous noise,
crack a joke, talk about the sky
put the phone down for a moment,
please, look me in the eyes.

Show this fragile world
you’re really listening,
it’s full of many wonders
ripe with lessons, glistening.

Take the time to feel the sun
shining ‘gainst your naked skin,
try -- yes, you might fail,
but oftentimes you’ll win.

Never miss a chance
to tell someone “I love you”
reward yourself, be frivolous,
pet the dog, buy the shoes.

It may not seem so now,
but our time is fading fast
soon this moment will be just a
memory, dredged up from the past.

Feel your lungs filling with breath,
your heart beating, sound and strong,
never gloat when you’re right,
say, “I’m sorry” when you’re wrong.

Make a joyous noise,
crack a joke, talk about the sky
put the phone down for a moment,
please, look me in the eyes.

The world screams for your attention
friends and loved ones wonder... why?
you’re hypnotized by that glowing screen
while your life just passes by.

This is wonderful, Eric! Thanks for the dose of sanity. So many words to live by!

Thank you, Doug! There are times when I have to completely check myself and just put the phone away.

This is wonderful ! And there's such a strong message in your poem, too!

Never miss a chance to make someone happy, especially since it wouldn't cost us anything... Just a smile, a word of appreciation, a compliment to make someone's day... The importance of love and unity.

"Show this fragile world
you’re really listening,"

You paint such a beautiful picture with these few words. Amazed !

Thank you so much for the kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I was just writing a song with a similar message. Everything must be recorded, we must show the world we're living, while life actually passes by. Living in the moment is no longer the trend and soon we would only experience life digitally the way we're going.

That is so true, @lordmok! In recording the moment we miss it in so many ways.

Thought provoking and beautiful. Love how you've incorporated a message in the poem.

Never miss a chance to tell someone that you love them, and never be afraid to admit when you're wrong.

Thanks so much!

(("buy the shoes" is what hypnotized me most... ;))

But seriously - true words. And a very fitting gif.

Is there a typo in the first line of the last verse? is/it?

Lol! Thank you and I appreciate you pointing out that typo!

...you’re hypnotized by that glowing screen
while your life just passes by.

The lament of an over technologized society. Those two lines sum up 21st century America. A powerful synopsis of our culture. Well said. Kudos.

I really appreciate it, @japhofin8or!

I take pleasure in seeing the world when I'm on a train and spotting something nature has put there just for me. because all the other people on the train are engrossed in their laptops and phones. I love this poem.

Isn't that the best to just sit back, be present, and observe the world? I do this a lot when I travel. Thank you so much for your kind words!

Still, you posted this on some device, we read it on our own devices...we're hooked to the screens, no matter what.
On the other hand, it's not always bad, because screens bring people together, people you wouldn't meet otherwise.

Absolutely true! We must just try to find a healthy balance.

love this, it moved me to tears actually!

Aw, thanks Ruth! I'm glad it resonated with you. I have so many of these unpublished (on my phone of all places.) Lol.

I'm so old fashioned it took me until a few months ago to break down and get a smart phone. Being away from the glow of technology is so much more invigorating :) Thanks for the poem :)

You're welcome! I totally agree, it's so cleansing to step away from it from time to time. It's sort of like hitting a reset button..

Such a wonderful way of reminding us all about life. Make the most of life while we can. I am a dementia caretaker and realise how important time is. Stay blessed, Sir.

Thank you, @sayee and thanks for what you do. It takes a special kind of person to care for dementia patients.

Lovely has usual, i love this part

Never miss a chance
to tell someone “I love you”
reward yourself, be frivolous,

Awesome

Yes, a glowing screen can be very hypnotizing at times. Great poem!

Thank you very much!

Live is really short. Great post!! 👍👍

'Tis true! Thank you!

Very motivating my friend

Thank you, brother!

Its nice to see someone with seemingly a more moderate take on technology. You obviously don't hate it since your a crypto-enthusiast. I know within myself that I am addicted to it and must remind myself to be more present and disconnect from technology. I find technology decreases my gratitude because it keeps me chasing some kind of stimulation. Thank you for the poem.

You're welcome! I love technology but I just feel like it's overtaken us sometimes. I think we all have that feeling within us that we know we're using it too much. It pains me to see people out socially and ignoring who they're out with or someone driving while on their phone, risking everyone's life around them. Thanks for your comment!

The older I get the more I feel this way. I can't stand it when I see people that don't take in the beauty of the world because they're too busy staring at their phones and they don't realize we will all be dead soon enough.

Me too, @jeezzle! That quote "Youth is wasted on the young." is so true sometimes.

This is an excellent poem that every teenager should read, and everyone else too. I actually don't use a phone as I refuse to carry a spy device around with me. I don't miss it, there is too much to observe and learn from just living.

Thank you! I wish we could achieve a better balance. People are missing so much while they're staring blankly into their phones.

By reading your words I feel I know you, which makes me love you and everything you do. This poem is so to the heart of how so many of us are living. My favorite line in this one is "put the phone down for a minute, please look me in the eyes." Awesome. I hope the world is listening.....

So glad you enjoyed it! Thank you!

There are easy solutions for this problem around us at all times!

  • glasses of water
  • toilets
  • kitchen sinks
  • garden ponds

Flush it and connect with the real world!

I love those solutions, Ophelia!

A wonderful poem that describes most people today, glued to the screen, be it TV, Computer, tablet or phone. Thnks for sharing.

Thanks for reading!

Nice poetry! Good one!

very nice

NIce poem...I have been hypnotized twice as part of a stage performance where the hypnotist takes people on stage from the audience, and was successfully hypnotized both times.

Yeah... it's unfortunately true.

Good work!

Very nicely put. Love the last paragraph.

Great poem, Hypnosis & hypnotizing are some of my favorite subject, but this poem has a different meaning. I enjoy the meaning of this poem talking about technologies growth and how technology is now using us more than we are using it.

Thank you, man!

Your welcome. ^_^

Sorry, what where you saying? I was looking at my phone.

Great poem! Thanks for sharing. :)

It is nice seeing you find the time to write a wonderful poem. I enjoyed reading it because you are so right. We are fixated to the computer or phone screen and don't take the time to be present. My excuse is that my daughter wants me to stay alert and healthy. So I am working on my neuroplasticity by doing research and writing articles I love to do. I guess I love to teach others about things we don't know about. So I am very guilty but I can tell you the truth....I feel so much happier and alive now than when I was working long hours to support my family. I appreciate what surrounds me and the friends that I have made. Thank-you Eric for the reminder though....we all need it. Have a wonderful upcoming weekend!!! :D

I'm really enjoying those articles of yours! Thank you, my friend! I hope you had a great week. Sorry for this late reply!

Damm that was so interestingly written i got hypnotised too :D that's a gem a post !!
thanks for sharing this !!

Lol! I appreciate that, @blazing! Thanks!

I enjoyed your poem and this is an important message to get out there.
So many people don't seem to see how they're not really living when they're
"hypnotized by that glowing screen
while your life just passes by"

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I really do think mobile phones are a hard core addiction for some. I hope, as a society, we can learn how to use them with a more balanced approach.

Funny, if my phone was put down, i wouldn't be reading this. Perhaps this visual artificial world is one of bliss of nature. Just saying. But then, i get it. I wish i would but sometime it just feels like artificial things like this visual world are the only things that make sense. Again, just saying. Great post by the way. It made me think big time.

So true! It's all about balance, I think. Thank you for reading and for your comment!

I was almost hypnotized lookig at the phone movement hahaha it works...upped and great poem. I am impressed by your freedom post and cited you on my latest post about the true meaning of freedom-feel free to see it. I wish you success and a blessed week.

Lol, I really like those mesmerizing Gifs. Thanks so much for the kind words and the mention in your post!
