Today I am going to share the story of the pebbles! Please read the story carefully as I will be asking you to solve a problem in it!
In the middle ages back in a small village in Pakistan, a farmer was indebted to a moneylender. The debt was so huge that the man had no way of paying it back.
The man had a very beautiful daughter who was his only child. The moneylender proposed to marry her but he was old and ugly. He said he would forgo the farmer’s debt if he could marry his daughter.
This did not come as a great news to both the farmer and his daughter but there did not have many options. As they stood there confused as to what to do, the money-lender suggested they drew lots to decide the matter. He told them that he would put a black and white pebbles into an empty money bag. Then the girl would have to pick one pebble from the bag.
If she picked the black pebble, she would marry him and her father’s debt would be forgiven. If she picked the white pebble she need not marry him and her father’s debt would still be forgiven. If she refused to pick a pebble, her father would be thrown into jail.
At the grounds, they were pebbles everywhere as the farmers field was pebble strewn. As they talked, the moneylender bent over to pick up two pebbles.
There is a saying that goes that the rich people never play fair! In this instance the moneylender was not really ready to give chance to chances, he picked two black pebbles instead of a black and white. Fortunately, the girl was sharp enough to see him in this deceitful act.
She allowed him put both black stones into the bag as though she had not noticed.
Here comes the question: *** What would you have done if you were the girl? ***
NB: Please write your what you would have done in the comments before you come back to complete the story! Lets keep it interesting!
Take a moment to think it through. What would you recommend that the girl do?
The girl drew up one pebble from the bag and without taking a look at it she intentionally fumbled and let the pebble fall down and immediately got lost against the background of pebbles!
“Damn it, how clumsy of me!” she said. “But never mind, if we look into the bag for the one that is left, you will be able to tell which one I picked.”
At this point the moneylender had only two options, to take his fate or disclose his dishonesty . He was not ready to sell his reputation in this manner and was forced to accept the verdict as it was.
The girl succeeded in changing what was an awkward situation to her advantage!
Was this in line with what you would have done? Please don't edit your comment!
Thanks for your attention!
I'd have played in a deceitful manner. Sharp brains always alert to deal with messy people and messy situations. :)
🤣Right! was hoping you'd be more specific as to what you would do!
If I was the girl, I would not have pretended that I didn't see the cheating. I would ask him to show the two pebbles and I would say "why don't you just say that you want to marry me and there are only two options".
Then I would probably reject him, and work as hard as I could to raise the money and get my father out of jail. I didn't think of your smart idea! :)
hahaha! wow! your dad would have been thrown into jail ! Thanks for the honesty!
