It was four days away from Halloween when I was sitting on my couch. For some reason, I was watching the news. There was a breaking news title and I turned up the volume. It said something about a deadly sickness going around the state that kills you and you come back to life as a "walking dead". It also said something about them attacking you and giving you that disease.
Later that day, I went over to my friend Nathan's house. We mostly just play video games and watched t.v. I stayed for supper and then I decided to head home. As I walked the 1 km to my house, I thought about how ridiculous it would be if there were actually dead people roaming the streets. Just then, I heard a weird noise, as if someone was screaming for their life. I walked toward where I heard it the first time and it started up again. Then, I heard a groan, it got louder and louder and a shadow started to come close to me. "Um, hello?" I said to the being, I got no answer. "Dude, why are you making that noise, It's weird!" As it continued to get closer, all I was thinking about is zombies and the news article. The strange being walked out of the darkness, into the moonlight. "Holy SHIT!" I screamed, " WHAT ARE YOU?!"
I ran as fast as I could in the other direction, blood rushing through my veins faster than ever, a thousand thoughts running through my head. There were two more zombies blocking the road In front of me, so I booked it down an alley. It was a DEAD END!!! I didn't know what to do, climb the 10-foot tall fence into some strangers yard, or get killed by a beast. I jumped to grab the top of the fence, not tall enough. The beings got closer and closer every second. I tried climbing it, but I fell off. "Oh my GOD!" I screamed and…
<center>Chapter 2</Center>
I jumped as high as I could, grabbed on to the top and hoisted myself up on top. I ran through the stranger's yard, got back on the main road and sprinted as fast as I could, back to my house. when I got home, It was 10 pm and everyone was asleep. I was super tired and I passed out as soon as I hit my bed.
I woke up and ran downstairs instantly, yelling my mom's name. I told her about everything about last night and I did not get the answer I was expecting. She just told me I had a bad dream and that my overactive imagination. I tried telling her that it wasn't any dream and that I was telling the truth, but she didn't believe me. My dad walked into the kitchen and started talking to my mom about work. Then she told him about my "story" and he didn't seem to believe me either! "You saw that news story yesterday, and you probably had a realistic feeling dream!" he said, " I swear, it wasn't a DREAM!" I replied loudly "Calm down Lance." my mom said in an angry tone "get in the car, I'm gonna drive you to school today."
At school, I told my group of friends what had happened to me, and none of them seemed to believe me either. They thought I was going crazy or something. sooner or later I just believed everyone else, that it was all my imagination. As the week went on, It got closer to Halloween.
I got the scream costume I picked out and went out for my last year of trick or treating. I met Nathan and three more friends at the corner store down the street and we went out. As we walked down the road, we got a couple of those looks from parents. The look that says "your too old for this" We were out for about two hours before we got tired and bored. We decided to take the old road back. It is a dirt road that dips off the main road and isn't used for anything anymore. People spread rumors about it being haunted but it's just a myth. As our group walked, we started hearing weird noises coming from the tall grass beside the windy dirt road. We thought it was just a cat or something, and just then something jumped out of the bushes. "what the heck, haha, that must be what we heard!" said Paul We continued walking and started hearing the quiet crunching noise and a sound that sounded like footsteps on gravel. We looked back and saw two zombies following us! We all screamed and started running! One came out of the bush one hundred feet in front of us and we all ran right past it. The five of us booted it onto the main road and went straight to the police station…
<center>Chapter 3</center>
The woman at the front desk freaked out when we barged through the front doors. We were all yelling and running around in circles until the lady at the desk snapped. "Can someone PLEASE tell me what is going on here?!" she screamed, "There were z-z-zombies on t-the back road, they chase us h-here!" "You know it is illegal to make up stories and tell them to the police, it's the same thing as calling 911." "We're not lying, I don't know what you're talking about, haven't you seen the news?" Jason yelled
"Ya, haven't you seen the news story's lately, all shit about a zombie apocalypse! We're not telling any sort of lies or stories, I swear on it." I said "Have you been doing any kind of drugs tonight?" the woman asked, "Are your parents aware your out this late?" "Were not on any kind of drugs and our parents are aware that were out this....." Just then, a police officer ran through the door and started screaming at the woman at the front desk. "They, th-there all over 7th ave, I hit one with my car and when I got out too wee what happened, the beasts started to attack me!" the man yelled, "One of them bit the back of, my leg Deb, what should I do?!" "I'll call an ambulance! Kids, if you did see what you said you saw, you need to stay here with us." The woman said
"My name is Debbie Allens, can I please get your names and ages?" she asked, " I'm Lance Damien." "I'm Nathan Gray." "I'm Jason Miller." "Paul Baker." "And I'm Matt Foyer." "Ok." Debbie said, "And how old are you guys?" "Were all 15," Matt said Just then, Paramedics came and took the bit police officer and then talked to Debbie about what just happened.
We were quarantined in the police station until 3:00 in the morning. Our parents had to come pick us up, and when they got here, they looked unhappy. When I got in the car, it was silent. There were 20 at least police cars all over 7th ave and down the back road. My dad didn't say a word to me until be got home, and when he did, it was all questions. My mom and sister were fast asleep, so they wouldn't know what happened until morning. I couldn't sleep at all that night, the whole walking dead thing had shaken me up. I couldn't stop thinking about what the future would look like. All the zombie movies take place way in the future, not in real time, I would never have thought a zombie apocalypse would actually happen.
My mom woke me up the next morning and told me there was no school. She also told me to come downstairs so she can show me something. I got dressed and went downstairs to see what was what and I was surprised. There was a news article about what happened last night. The whole city was shut down and everyone was to remain inside until the city was cleared of the dead. It also said that the police officer that bit, passed away in the hospital late last night.
<center>Chapter 4</Center>
The week went by as if it were an eternity, nothing to do except sit around and watch t.v or play with my sister, and both of those things get boring after a while. The constant question asking by my mom and sister is getting really annoying, its like they won't stop! Just because I got stuck out there when all this went down, it doesn't make me a celebrity. Lately, I have just been laying in bed trying to sleep, I've been having nightmares about whats going on. All this quarantine shit should be over soon so our lives can be back to normal.
Friday: My dad and I were sitting on the couch watching hockey when all the sudden a news report interrupted the game. There was an outbreak of the virus in some small town in Vietnam and a bunch of these walking dead is moving toward a big city or something. It has the whole country freaking out, they got the army and everything in on the situation. Some scientist in Washington D.C it trying to find a cure for the virus, but he's gained no progress so far.
Tuesday: The city let everyone go back to there normal lives again today. Most people were pretty shaken up by the fact there were real zombies roaming our city and that people actually died because of them. I and Matt were talking about all this in homeroom, we both think this will be the talk of the school for the next 6 months. They kept everyone inside for lunch and we had to move class by class to go to the bus, the whole day was a pain in the ass. Let's just hope nothing like this happens here anymore. When I got home, I looked up the news highlights and it turns out there is a huge crisis with these things in Asia, like there infesting big cities in Vietnam and they moved to Thailand and have started there. The whole world is getting freaked out by these things, and I'm getting scared myself.
<center>Chapter 5</center>
The city has been fairing quite well lately, there were about five zombie sighings this week but nothing too bad. People are treating these things like there some kind of wild animal. There still scared of them but aren't hiding under there beds in fear. All of Vietnam and Thailand has been taken over by the zombies and Asia is freaking out. Los Angeles had an outbreak too. The country is doing everything they can to make people not die. Dr. Stphinspits in D.C found out why all this is happening. It turns out some certain chemicals have gotten into the air and water and it is reactivating the brain after death. All these beasts want to do is eat, and what they want to eat is flesh.
When I got home from school today, my mom was freaking out. There was a 50 car pile up on highway 5 today and a transport truck blew up. It killed 75 people and now most of them are roaming the streets right now! The city says we should all stay inside until this situation is resolved. Just then, my dad calls, my mom picks up and she screams a terrified scream. He was stuck in a huge traffic jam with my sister on highway 5, about a mile from the accident and one of the zombies is hitting the car! All the sudden my sister screams and the phone goes silent. "What happened?" I asked "Dad and your sister are stuck on the highway and the phone went quiet!" she yelled, "well call them back then!" I shout
My mom dialed his number about 10 times and no pickup, and when he called my sister, she didn't answer either. "Give them time mom," I say "he will call us back, there phones probably just died."
My mom and I waited patiently for about 2 hours before my mom finally snapped. "I'm sick and tired of waiting for this dumb ass, me and you are going out to look for him!" "Why were never getting anywhere near him, the traffic is backed up for miles, they need to clear the road before he can get home." I say "We will never find them, its a mess!" "Well we have to do something!" mom screams
After about 30 minutes of arguing, she convinced me to go with her to find them. We were to look for a red Honda Civic, you'd think that would be easy to find, but we saw ten on the way to the highway. When we neared the highway, we could hear sirens in every direction. The thing I couldn't figure out why I am so calm and my mom is panicking. She was speeding and driving like a maniac to get somewhere she couldn't go. As we approached highway 5, we saw how bad the accident actually was. There were cars left, right and center, all completely totaled. Traffic was backed up as far as I could see, but none of the cars looked like dads. "Go towards L.A, stay in the 3rd lane and I will look for his car." I said "Ok, deal!" mom replied
We drove 30 miles per hour looking for his car and after driving for 20 minutes, we finally found it, we pulled over and both of us jumped out to see if they were. My dad wasn't in the car, but my sister was in the back seat crying her eyes out. "Where is DAD?!" mom yelled "H-he got out of the car to get his phone charger out of the back and one of those things came running out of no where and started chasing him!" she cried "What way did he run?" mom asked violently "He ran toward the accident." my sister replied "Well everyone get into the car, we're going to look for him! I cut in: “LET’S GO!”
I hopped in the driver seat and floored it the wrong way up the highway, riding the shoulder so I wouldn't hit any oncoming traffic. We pulled over every hundred to get out and call his name, but of course, there was no answer. We were up and down that stretch of road until dark, and every time no answer, there were walking dead all over the place and hurt people all over the ground. My mom and sister were freaking out. We spent four hours looking after dark, and we still made no progress. "Driving up and down the fucking highway isn't going to help with anything, so stop crying. He is probably in his friend's car trapped inside!" I snapped, "I'm driving home and we will come back tomorrow. The traffic jam will be cleared by then and he will probably get in the car and drive back home."
I drove home listening to my mom and sister cry about him being missing, and I was trying so hard not to pull over and walk home. It felt like I was driving for a year by the time we got back to our house. Mom and Sabrina just sat in front of the t.v watching the news and I just went upstairs and passed out.
When I woke up in the morning, I went downstairs and my mom was nowhere in sight. I walked over to the kitchen and found a note on the table saying:"Me and Sabrina actually care about dad so we went out to look for them. Call me when you wake up." A million thoughts raced through my mind and 10 seconds later, I ran over to the phone and called her number. It went right to the answering machine. Then I called my sisters phone and she picked up and she said that traffic is nearly cleared and that I should take the truck over here. I ran upstairs and grabbed pants and a coat.
I booked it into the garage and hopped in the truck. I put the pedal to the floor, trying to get there as fast as I could. Just then, I took a corner too fast and flipped the truck on its side. The Truck slid on the left for forty feet and flipped into the ditch. the roof started caving in at the front and none of the doors would open, I was trapped! The back window must have been made of titanium because they wouldn't break. My body was shaking as if I was having a seizure, I was scared for my life, so I grabbed the jack from under the back seat and smashed it out. I climbed into the box and kicked the tailgate open and escaped. I looked around and two zombies were coming right towards me. I swung the jack at one's head and it exploded like a hand grenade and I ran past another one.
I was running as fast as I could toward highway 5, scared to death. I couldn't stop thinking about my parents and my sister. They were out there where all of this started. The news said there was at least one hundred of them in the area, if not more. I felt a couple of tears run down my face but I wiped them away instantly. I saw a road sign saying highway 5 ahead, I started running faster. By the time I got there, I was so out of breath, I couldn't see straight. My mom's car was nowhere in sight. My sister said they were right by the exit. Maybe they found my dad and drove back to the house when I was stuck, or they went looking for my dad. I couldn't call them because I left my phone in the truck. right then, a car came roaring behind me and slams on the brakes, It was MY DAD.
He said that he had been chased from his car when he went to get his charger from the trunk. When he outran them, he went back and he said that Sabrina wasn't in the car and that he ran back to the house to see if she went back but no one was there. Then he ran back to his car and slept the night there thinking she might come back, but he was wrong. "Where are your mom and sister?" he asked calmly, "I have no idea, they said for me to meet them here. Did you see the truck about a mile back?" I asked, "Yeah I did. Were you driving without a license again, or was that mom?" he demanded, "That was me. We gotta find mom too!" I spoke, "Ya, get in the car, let's go!" he agreed
We drove up and down the highway five times before any of us had even requested to check back at the house. When we drove past my wreck, dad gave me a look of hatred and anger. I could tell he was trying to keep it to himself but the face showed. I said I was sorry about ten times, he should know that I am. When we got to our house, there were no cars in the driveway wich got me and dad a bit worried. I ran inside and called ttheirnames, but I got no answer. When I returned to the car, we tried phoning my mom and sister but neither of them would pick up wich got us very worried. "There phones probably just died or something." dad mumbled to himself as he backed out of the driveway. He drove back to the exit and we just waited on the shoulder. After waiting twenty minutes, we got a call from Sabrina. She said mom hit one of the zombies and that the car wouldn't start. She also said that there were six of them surrounding the car. "Where are you?" I asked "were just off exit 7 on highway 5." she replied quickly. "We will be right there!" I shouted
We flew down the road going 200 kilometers per hour and slammed on the brakes when we reached the exit. We saw the surrounded car. Dad drove up to it, grabbed a hammer and a crowbar out of the backseat and handed the hammer to me. "Are you ready?" dad asked, "Lets go!" I yelled
We kicked open the door and started swinging at the beasts. We smashed them in the head and they dropped down instantly. There were four more and I missed one and I shattered the driverside window. One of the zombies climbed into the car and started attacking mom. I ripped the creature out of the car, threw it down and smashed my fist into its head killing it. My dad got my sister out of the car unharmed, but my mom was badly hurt. She had a huge chunk of her neck missing and was bitten down to the bone on the left arm. Blood was gushing out of her fast! She was about to pass out so me and ,my dad loaded her into the car and slammed the doors. "Put your sweater tight around her arm and use mine to put on her neck, put pressure on that too!" dad demanded I did what he said to do but blood was starting to seep through the material.
Dad pulled up to the hospital and I and he carried her inside. The lady at the front desk screamed and called a doctor and she yelled "Second-floor room 115, go NOW!". I and dad ran up the stairs to the second floor and brought her into the room. Right after us, Dr. Robertson came running with two nurses. "Would you please excuse us, just go wait downstairs!" he yelled at us. We walked out of the room and sat down a little bit down the hall. Tears started running down my face so I put my head on my shirt. I hadn't cried in front of my dad since I was a little kid, so I was a little bit embarrassed. "I know It's sad, but your mom is strong, she will like through this." said dad, "I caused this, I smashed the window that the zombie climbed through, It's all my fault she is here probably dying.." I sulked. He went silent.
<center>Chapter 8</center>
I went out to the car and told my sister to come inside. All three of us just sat outside of the emergency room, waiting for an answer from the doctor or a nurse. I tried to go into the room but they yelled: "get out". I felt like someone had just broken my heart in half. We waited for a good five hours until the doctor finally came out and said something. "Even though we put our best surgeon on the job, I don't think she is gonna make it. There is just too much damage, I am so sorry!" he said. I looked over to my at dad and sister and saw tears rolling down there faces. I went over and gave them a hug. I started to cry more than I ever have before.
We sat on the floor crying for 20 minutes before a security guard shooed us out of the hospital. "FUCK MY LIFE, AAHHH" my dad yelled as we walked out of the hospital. "WHY HER, WHYYY?! SHIT!" "Don't freak out dad, You don't think were dad, I'm over here crying my eyes out and you don't see me freaking out," I said He looked at me with a look of hatred and punched m in the face. " I'm so sorry, I didn't mea..." I punched him right in the jaw, cutting him off. He pushed me back and I tackled him to the ground, I punched him in the face as hard as I could. I got up, looked at my hand and said: " go fuck yourself you douche!" His face had a good sized gash in it and he had a bruise on his jaw. I got into the passenger seat and looked at myself in the mirror. I was shaking and had tears running down my face. "I hate you guys, fighting on the saddest d-day of our lives, mom was my favorite person, and now sh-sh-she's gone." Sabrina sulked
We didn't talk to each other the whole way home. Dad didn't even look over at me, and his body was shaking almost as much as mine. When we got home. We all went into different rooms and minded our own business. I heard muffled screams and stuff being thrown so I turned on the news. It turns out the city is in trouble. The amount of these creatures is too much, they can't clear them fast enough. They have killed and/or attached over 10 thousand people in the past two days. Also, There struggling to keep the power on because the main power plant for California is having technical difficulties. "The world is coming to an end," I mumbled and then walked downstairs
<center>Chapter 9</center>
It's been two weeks since mom died and every day gets harder. My dad won't even talk to me and my sister just cries all day. They both think I don't care that she died. I have cried every night since it happened, It was all my fault that she died and no one can tell me It wasn't. School has been canceled since the accident and all the stores are closed. People think they can just do whatever they want and get away with it. This week, there was more crime in California than there has been in three years. Just then, I heard my name be called, so I went downstairs. "Come sit down, we need to have a family conversation." my dad said. I sat down next to Sabrina and listened to the lecture. " This has been the worst week of our lives, and they will only get worse." dad continued " I'm sorry for what I did and I hope you guys will forgive me. We gotta stay as a family, the zombies will take over the world and we will survive." I got up, said: "yep" and walked back upstairs.
The next day I went to a shooting range and applied for a gun license. They thought it was pretty shady of me to drive there by myself but I was accepted. Then I went to the bank and emptied my college fund into cash and went and bought fifteen thousand dollars worth of guns and ammo. When I got back home, everyone was asleep, so I took the 10 guns up to my room and hid them underneath my bed. "What is all the racket?" dad asked, "Nothing, just moving stuff around," I replied and he walked away.
Later that night, I was hearing weird noises coming from outside. It was a very windy night so I figured it was just that until I looked outside and saw eight zombies smashing the front door of my neighbor's house! I ran into my dad's room and yelled: "There is ZOMBIES surrounding Anne and Dave's HOUSE!" "Holy FUCK!" dad yelled and he ran into my room to look. "Holy crap, we can't have them on our property," he said, "We gotta do something." I went under my bed and grabbed a pistol and handed it to him, I screwed on a silencer and said: "Shoot from up here." He fired five bullets and not one was even close to hitting them, so I grabbed the gun out of his hand and shot three without missing. After all his missing, they all wondered to the streets so I ran downstairs, outside and shot the five on the street and closed and locked the door. "Where did you learn to shoot like that?" dad asked, "I went to the range and practiced and all the years I went hunting with grandpa." I replied, "And where did the guns come from?" he asked, "I bought them." I said, "Ok? Well, I'm going to go to sleep, night." He walked upstairs and went into his room and I followed.
I was woken up the next morning by my sister. She told me how all of California had no power and that they might not be able to turn it back on. "What the fuck, what are we gonna do?" I asked, "I honestly don't know whats gonna happen, let's just pray it only lasts for a couple hours!" she replied. " I need to show you something, come outside!" I proposed. She shrugged and followed me outside. I told her what happened last night and how there were a bunch of dead surrounding the house and she thought it was pretty cool. I was in the middle of telling her about how bad of a shot dad when a cop car pulled up to our house. "Is your dad home Lance?" the officer asked, "yeah he is inside, go on in," I said. Sabrina and I followed the officer inside and sat down next to my dad on the couch. "It's about your mom, she was buried yesterday afternoon. Are you guys gonna hold a funeral for her?" He asked "No, it might put people in danger, she wouldn't want that." dad replied "I'm sorry for your guy's loss, I feel your pain. She was a great woman." The officer replied and walked away.
<center>Chapter 10</center>
When the cop left, we just sat on the couch, looking at each other. Saying nothing, just thinking. My sister and dad were hugging and I sat alone. She was my favorite parent and my dad knew that. That's why he probably doesn't like me that much. We have always had a few family troubles, but I feel like the one to always break up me and dad's fights was mom. He didn't ever smile or laugh at my jokes or at anything that I said, but he was always all over my sister. If its only gonna be us for the rest of our likes, be gotta learn how to get along.
Five Days Later:
The power has still yet to come on, the grocery stores can't keep the food from rotting and the hospitals are running out of power for there generators. The country it trying to evacuate the whole state of California, but they have gained little progress. The walking dead have been constantly killing innocent beings and the population of the zombies is beginning to be uncontrollable. There has been an estimated death toll of 1.5 million people in the state of California alone and that is in a period of a month. At this rate, the whole country will go down in less than a year. " Yo, we gotta get out of the big city, if a big mob of those things comes by, were trapped like rats!" I told my dad, "ya I know, how tho? You crashed the truck and my car is super shitty so how does that work?" he asked, "We just "borrow" a truck from someone and use it until this is over." I replied, "Oh ok, do you want to get arrested or something?" he demanded, "No, its just an option and it could save our lives! Like Just go over to Uncle David's house and borrow his Ram and.." I was cut off. "Fuck, he and Bridget are still in Cuba. They could be dead for all we know. The power is out so we can't call them. He is my only family left other than you and your sister, I can"t lose him!" he said "We will go over to his house. If he is there we will take him with us. If not, the truck is ours."
We waited until the next morning to go to David's house. The whole city is basically closed and there are walking dead everywhere. Who knew that it would be life-threatening to drive across the city. We all piled into my dad's car. Each of us had a gun and a knife on them just in case anything went wrong.here were at least forty right in front of the exit! Dad sped up, and maneuvered around them, slightly clipping about five, we were on our way! the roads were clear until we reached the Hellen Heights neighborhood. There are over 750 houses and 7 condos there. It is the biggest neighborhood in the area. The road was infested with the dead, and they all were coming our way! We all panicked so dad threw the car into reverse and floored it backward. He hit two and decided to go forward again. "Let me drive, you're a lil bitch!" I yelled. I think that pissed him off cause right after, the car took off. He hit zombie after zombie until we broke through. He kept his foot down up the off ramp. "I guess you're not, hahaha!" I said. Luckly for us, David lives on the outskirts of Hellen Heights so we might not get in trouble.
We reached his house five minutes later. The zombies messed up the car pretty bad! Smoke was pouring out of the engine and it nearly died on us twice. We got out, guns in our hands and knocked on his door. There was no answer which worried us. We knocked again and still nothing, so we tried to open the door but it was locked. I stood back and kicked the door in and yelled: "David if you're here, come out. It's Lance, Bret, and Sabrina!" We got no answer, so I yelled it again and still no answer. Dad ran in and searched his whole house but all he found was his cat, dead. I saw a tear run down his face. "Get the truck keys off the rack and open the garage, you drive the truck and I and Sabrina will take my car." dad said, "Ok, I'll be out in a minute," I replied
