Is it okay to comment but not upvote? All signs point to yes

Maybe you're waiting to charge up your voting power, maybe you've expended almost all your voting power.

There could be all sorts of reasons why you may be holding back that upvote, but does that mean you should hold back on your comment? I say no. Steemit is first and foremost a social network.

We come here to laugh and learn, to share and think, discuss and explore. That's what we've always been doing on social media, and that's what will happen on Steemit. However, this new platform challenges convention in that it provides financial incentive to blog, vote, and comment in a way that is germane to the OP's post. If we behaved as though there weren't any financial rewards, maybe we could relax a little and enjoy a great new social network without worrying if our discourse is sound financial strategy.

But now that the financial incentive cat is out of the bag, are all bets off? Can we show appreciation for a post without upvoting it? Is that rude? Though I feel dirty sayings its name, on Facebook I would often comment and forget to like.

In fact, I hated "likes" because the constant notifications would quickly drain the battery on my phone

Of course, now upvotes mean $$, sometimes BIG BIG money and I have no doubt there are highly intelligent Steemians who have developed and executed strategies to maximize their time and effort, as is their right. But are we tying our own hands by withholding our comments when we feel guilty about not upvoting?

While it's generally understood how voting power works, for many Steemians its a new experience to wield financial sway with the simple upvoting of a post. For Steemians who enjoy a variety of subjects but understand that their voting power is less and less the more that they vote, it may feel awkward participating in a conversation without upvoting the OP, as though you're a conversational freeloader.

For me, the comments section is where the good discourse goes down, and if presented with a choice between upvotes with no comments and comments with no upvotes, I'd prefer the latter. It's wonderful to have many people, including Steempowered whales and dolphins, enjoy your work and show you their appreciation through an upvote, but there's something deeply gratifying about the discussion that succeeds an interesting post, especially knowing that the author of the post is directly in communication with you, and is considering your opinion in real time.

I haven't seen anyone identifying this as an issue so this is more of a steemosophical exploration of upvoting and commenting, and the effect of tying financial rewards to social behaviors.

tl;dr I've commented on a few posts without upvoting and felt weird

Happy Saturday Night. Time for Stranger Things. See ya in the morning, Steemit

Brilliant article. I do it all the time. I just did it on yours! LOL
Anyway, a comment without an Upvote is still doing the author a favour.

Haha right on! Could you expand on how the comment without an upvote is still doing the author a favor? I'd like to know more :)

Because:
1 - Comments increase activity. It keeps it high on the sort by "active" result page.
2 - More comments make an item look more valuable from the preview page.
3 - Many users over time will end up being followed around and their activity will be copied by bots or copycat humans.
4 - It gives the author a reason/opportunity to engage and add to the comment number without looking spammy
5 - It makes your article look more valuable when people click into it to read it.

I think it's perfectly fair especially for little guys like me. I think past a certain point you have to be more altruistic as many whales you see doing lately, voting early, etc.

I agree. Though as a whale, I'd imagine you'd have a whole new set of variables to consider. Per their size, they usually cause waves no matter what they do haha

Definitely, but I just read today that rich people donate much less (half actually, proportionally of course) to charity compared to "poor" people...so there's that haha.

I enjoyed this post.. but left with the question.. when I upvote something I lose my upvote "charge"? What is that? I'm a new user today and just started reading a bit about it. A friend of mine was up voting all the things he liked. To me it makes sense to both comment and upvote things you like. I don't know why would you chose?

There is a thing called Voting Power that you can view at Steemd (I linked to your profile for convenience) that decreases a little bit every time you upvote something, and recharges slowly over time. The less voting power you have, the less rewards you will get when a post pays out. It was added to penalize bots that used to just upvote every single post.

If you go to Steemd.com/@cloudhead you'll be able to see your profile. Another, easy to view site is Steemstats.com - in the upper left box enter your username and it will show your voting power. This will diminish with each vote you cast, and will recharge over a fixed period. It's pretty cool, in my opinion.

That is neat.. I think I might be too new to show up on there yet though. I wonder what the recharge period is. I upvoted your article btw :P

I just looked you up, you're there :)
Snip20160723_74eea9.png Thanks for the upvote!

I have actually upvoted some and commented, and others just made a comment. Specifically posts that are giving news about something, or "stating facts" where there are no sources posted. I sometimes don't vote and just ask for sources. I have seen some upvote my asking the question..."sources?".

Yeah, in those instances I would upvote your comment too, sources should be referenced

Comments definitely add way more value then upvotes, expecially since most people upvote blindly with out reading the articles. Ive found more rewards in commenting then upvoting but i do both as i want to add as much value to steemit as i can.

I've also found the commenting to be rewarding, in conversation and in SBD/Steempower. I try to use my voting power because that's how the platform was built and is obviously an important function in the ecosystem. I love that we're all adding value to the platform just by discussing this and exploring and upvoting/commenting on our interests

Eventually many people will start to realize this is not only about making some quick cash and me! me! me! We can share ideas back and forward and just hang out as we do on many other social sites with nothing in return...
