Tech News: Will the Homes of the Future be 3d Printed?

in #steemstem7 years ago

It's both expensive and time-consuming to build a custom house by hand. As human labor has become increasingly more expensive, some homebuilders have decided they would rather automate part of the construction instead.

There's a new Ukrainian homebuilding startup called PassivDom that is changing the way homes are built. Instead of traditional manufacturing they use a 3D printing robot capable of printing many of the components and raw inputs needed to build a tiny house.

The machine can print the walls, roof, and floor of PassivDom’s 410-square-foot model in about eight hours. The windows, doors, plumbing, and electrical systems are then added by a human worker.

Using a 3d printer to print walls, a roof and a floor is quite an accomplishment and certainly a step towards a new revolution in manufacturing and homebuilding.

Another thing that is quite impressive about these 3d printed homes is that they are autonomous and mobile. This means that they don’t need to connect to external electrical and plumbing systems. To accomplish this task firstly, solar energy is stored in a battery connected to the houses. Secondly, water is collected and filtered from humidity in the air (or you can pour water into the system yourself). Finally, the houses also feature independent sewage systems.

These homes are in high demand and because of their popularity, since the startup launched in spring 2017, they have received more than 8,000 preorders in the United States alone for their homes. If you are considering buying one, you should know that they are cheap but not that cheap, their most basic model starts at $64,000. The first 100 ones were delivered in January 2018.

Do you think we are looking at the future of modern housing development projects? Will we see entire neighborhoods of houses like these built? Can you imagine a team of robots entering a plot of land and leaving behind a completely 3d printed neighborhood 24 hours later?

What do you guys think? Leave your comments below!

Thanks for reading.

As a real estate agent I wonder what the future holds for real estate. Possibly mobile homes rather than renting. The trend now is rentvesting. People own investment homes but rent something out to live in and the reason is partly due to mobility. Not tied to a mortgage but can get up and leave at any time.

That seems like a very solid strategy. I think people are more open to travelling and seeing the world these days and owning a home as a rental property provides a nice stable income to do something like that. That strategy may end up being even more popular in the future! Thanks for your thoughts.

3D print a house must be a huge 3D printer.. but if it is possible then why not.

Sounds efficient and cool! But I hope that it will also not take that fast for the house to be destroyed by any calamity. What's the house made of, by the way?

That is a great question! Actually made me do a bit more research here because when you asked it, I didn't have a clue...

According to what I found on wikipedia:

'The Chinese company WinSun has built several houses using large 3D printers using a mixture of quick drying cement and recycled raw materials. Ten demonstration houses were said by Winsun to have been built in 24 hours, each costing US $5000 (structure not including, footings, services, doors/windows and fitout).'

I like seeing the word recycled in combination with new building projects! We need to become more sustainable and it is a step in the right direction. Thanks for stopping by and leaving such an excellent question! Take care.

Me too! 😀 I hear there are also many inventors building construction blocks made of recycled glass, plastic and cartons. And this is great news.

Thank you too for making an effort to answer my question! Cheers and take care as well.

I see no reason why it won't happen. At the rate the technology is growing, that's definitely a possibility.

Oufff I was on board once you said 8 hours. For so cheap that quite literally could mean entire neighbourhoods in 24 hours with a couple dozen of these bad boys... but would that mean saying bye bye to construction workers? pretty big industry

With the unaffordable prices in the housing for many, making the manufacturing of houses more efficient, eco-friendly and affordable would be a more massive benefit to a lot of people who would otherwise not be able to get their own house.

I'm very interested in the potential of 3D printed buildings. I hope more experimentation is done with this concept and that it becomes a common way to build.

It's quite amazing and probably the future. But then I think about all the skills that could disappear.

Wow, this is really interesting..., the evolvement of the 3d printers would go a long way in solving shelter problems, and the fact that the houses are very strong and efficient seals it all..
I hope this gets to Nigeria someday, or maybe mine would be the first😊

I have never heard of this type of house before. The idea is good and it has a lot of creativity, but what about resistance? And from which material are these houses made? What are the properties of these substances? Especially in hot or cold areas. And to what extent it is safe against natural disasters?
Sorry i'm asking so many question lol because i find this idea very amazing and i like to know more about it :) Especially for materials because it interests me as a chemist.
Thank you for this great article

3D printers are one of the most revolutionary invention of modern time. Using 3D printers to build house can really save a lot of time and effort. Though this tech isn't massively available yet, but i believe it really has a great future on real estate industry.
Thanks to u for the quick reminder article about this awesome tech.
