SteemSTEM Distilled #47

in #steemstem7 years ago

Welcome to the 47th issue of SteemSTEM Distilled, a bi-weekly curation effort by the members of the @steemstem team.

SteemSTEM is a community driven project which seeks to promote well-written and informative Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics posts on Steemit. The project involves curating STEM-related posts through upvoting, resteeming, offering constructive feedback, supporting scientific contests, and other related activities.

For more details, a recent update on the steemSTEM can be found here, and a not so recent one there. Moreover, if you ask yourself about what it means to be part of steemSTEM, please check here.

Our team scours the platform for original and quality content.

After working through thousands (literally!) of STEM-related posts and upvoting more than 150 that we deemed to be worthy, we proudly present you our top 6 handpicked choices for this Monday-Wednesday period.

Monday

PNAs: An amazing molecular tool that can be converted into an effective antibiotic

Did you miss @tking77798's brilliant posts? Because he has published another one this week and the topic? How Peptic Nucleid Acid (an artificial DNA "copycat") can be used as an antibiotic. Haven't you read that yet?

Electricity and the human system --- Impulses, shocks, zaps and what-nots

An "electrifying" post by @pangoli is here and discusses... electricity. A little catch up on static and current electricity, how electricity works in the human body and what damage can electric shocks cause to it. Trust us, you want to read it!

Tuesday

A Peek Into the World of Quantum Computing

Who is in for some physics? We got an amazing post by @davidekpin on quantum computing. Don't miss it!

A Snapping Turtle Was Fed A Sick Puppy; It Was Euthanized Later

@chloroform is here with another excellent animal post. Who is starring in this one? Alligator Snapping Turtle. You do want to learn more about this cannibal weirdo, so go ahead and click on that title!

Wednesday

Debunk-Tuesday – Neuro-Linguistic Bullshit

A very interesting post by @egotheist in his Debunk-Tuesday series. This post is all about "demystifying" Neuro-Linguistic Programming. Aren't you going to read it?

INTRODUCTION TO CARTOGRAPHY - COLOR SYSTEMS

Introduction to cartography is a series under the #engineering tag by @lordneroo. In this part he discusses color vision and the most common three color systems (not only) cartographers use. Spare the time to read it, you will definitely learn something!

A few words about the nomination process

For the sake of transparency we feel we need to clarify how our nomination process works; each issue is compiled by certain members of the SteemSTEM community. This mid-week's editorial team was comprised of @ruth-girl.

The editorial team chooses their favorite posts for the week and each issue is the result of their joined effort. In order to keep the process fair, posts written by the editorial team are excluded from the nomination process.

Don't be discouraged if you didn't make it on this issue. The competition is harsh and there is always a next time :)

Top steemSTEM authors

During the last two weeks, steemstem supported with more than a (possibly split) full vote the following authors:

@adetola, @agbona, @alexander.alexis, @alexdory, @alexs1320, @anaestrada12, @bitfairy, @carloserp-2000, @chloroform, @davidrhodes124, @dedicatedguy, @effofex, @egotheist, @gentleshaid, @gra, @greenrun, @kingabesh, @lemouth, @lordneroo, @migueldavidor, @mountain.phil28, @olajidekehinde, @rharphelle, @ruth-girl, @samminator, @soulesque, @spaghettiscience, @terrylovejoy, @valth, @whileponderin

We are expecting them to strongly engage the community in return :)

All curation rewards earned will be used to fund @steemstem project functioning and activities.

See you all next Monday!

That's we have the distilled, to make sure all your hard work doesn't get neglected :)

Thank you so much @agbona!

its a pleasure , man.

Congrats to all the winners this week! It was a good selection as always, @ruth-girl.

I have a question by the way:

I have seen some people who use the following gif to promote #steemstem:
U5dthhWhEnA6xZCDo4upgCbBS1GsT4v.gif

I like this gif, and I would love to use it to give @steemstem some more exposure at the end of my science posts. However, I have no idea who created it, or if the author allows people to re-use it. So does anyone know?

Best regards from @valth

Hey @valth!! Thank you! I feel bad for not being able to recall the name of the user now, but the gif is free for use as it promotes @steemstem!!

And here is a compilation of all our other gifs (people can find them pinned on the steemstem general chat discord channel):

That's great! Thanks :) I've been writing a sentence about @steemstem in a lot of the science posts I have done recently, but a gif like one of these would be a lot more eye-catching.

Thank you so much guys, it's an honor for me to be included in this issue of SteemSTEM Distilled! I'm more than grateful for the support!

I will keep doing my best to ensure I deserve your love.

Conratulations to all members of this wonderful community!

Just like old wine that keeps getting better as the day goes by, we keep getting better and better. I do really congratulate those that made distilled this time. Keep it up guys.
More power to your elbow @ruth-girl

White, red or rose? (hehe, just kidding)
We are getting better and that is the point, to never stop evolving!

Thank you @whileponderin!! Cheers! :P

Another distilled !

Congratulations everyone.

Thank you! :D

Well done team. @ruth-girl nice pick from numerous good post. Congratulations to authors. Let's all continue to give our unalloyed support for the community. @lemouth good work

Thanks @steepup!! Our authors rock!! (whether they are featured here or not) :)

You're correct. They (we) all rock together. Well done.

I think the chosen post must be selected on the bases of content and easy language. If a post is written in 3000 words and express a ten sentence content, I don't think it is worth of your reward and upvote. I have seen most of the selected articles too long to be reasonable for any educational purpose.
Yes I also do write with steemstem tag, hope one day my blog may be visited too.
Appreciate your efforts for helping the people with good content.

Voting % depends on a lot of things:

  • topic
  • clarity
  • originallity
  • language
  • content referrencing & image crediting
  • author engagement within the community

Long posts that "answer" to the above criteria surely qualify for an upvote more generous than an equally long post that has not much to say and repeats the same thing over and over again. The same goes for short posts that discuss more complex ideas, but don't elaborate on them.

Thanks for the engagement and positive attitude. Personally I didn't expected so elaborated reply.

Congratulations to the picked authors

Nice work by the team
Everyone is giving @ruth-girl the credit.... Is she d brain box🙈

I am more of the craze box but no one ever congratulates me on this :P

I simply put this series together, but curation is way more complex and involves a lot of other people that browse, read, comment and upvote all these posts :)

I appreciate the effort put into promoting science at this blog. I invite people that are interested in any and all biology topics to check out my blog. I have videos on CRISPR, viruses, vaccines, science education, and more. Thanks! -Dr. J.

Congratulations to all who made the list. I have gone through all the posts and I must say they are mind blowing.
