well, first of all, they ruin the material itself as they make it thinner, right?

and does it really protective? Protective from what? Oxygen only?

1.only from oxygen in the air

It is kind of a layer that if damaged mechanically, repairs itself later.

so, it actually re-appears thanks to scratches
