well, first of all, they ruin the material itself as they make it thinner, right?

Yup.. But afterwards, it turn into layer.

Air, Scratches ! :D

1.only from oxygen in the air

It is kind of a layer that if damaged mechanically, repairs itself later.

so, it actually re-appears thanks to scratches
