It kind of sounds to me like the discovery is less of a memory transfer, and more of a chemical reaction transfer.
Primarily, RNA acts as a messenger that transports protein-making information from DNA.
And when the excitable RNA was placed in the petri dish, it caused the cells to behave more excitably -- because there was a chemical reaction they induced by the information they provided. Less a memory and more an instinct, at best.
But I think it has potential. And I think it's really cool!
