In term of Biology, Cell is the basic unit of a living organism that consist of a quantity of protoplasm covered by a cell membrane which is able to synthesize protein and replicate it self.

Cell according to biology is known as the basic unit of all living things(plants animals and MAN) simply because it carries out activities in living things such as feeding, reproduction, excretion growth etc all these functions a cell possess are the characteristics of living organism. CELL is derived from the LATIN word “CELLA” which means small room.
The study of cell is called CELL BIOLOGY.

The likes of Robert HOOKE who is known as the father of cell is the first man to discover the HONEY COMB STRUCTURE of cell in 1665,

FELIX DUJARDIN a French biologist discovered cell is made up of a living substance named PROTOPLASM

MATTIAS SCHLEIDEN a BOTANIST from Germany discovered that the bodies of plants are made up of cells which he described as units of life in 1838.

Living organism are classified into two major groups based on the number of cells which is UNICELLULAR also known as ACELLULAR and MULTICELLULAR organism.

Unicellular are organism that consist of only one cell. It falls into two categories PROKARYOTIC and EAKAYOTIC organism. Examples of unicellular organism are amoeba, chlamydomonas etc
