A visit to a fueling station always has some warning. There is the sign showing no smoking, stop the engine, and the one below that warns customers to turn off all electronic equipment including cellular phones.

It is a widely held belief that the electromagnetic radiation responsible for the communication between a cell phone and the tower is capable of igniting fuel vapour directly or cause an induction of current that could trigger sparks that had the capability of igniting the fuel causing an explosion from the resulting fire.
How True are these Claims?
The cell phones are low-power RF (radio frequency) transmitters in the range of 450 to 2700 megahertz, MHz) and the power peaks at between 0.1 to 2 watts. This is because cell phones and base stations use low-power transmitters. But is this enough to cause an explosion by igniting fuel vapour?
The science said no due to the devices emitting very little energy of about 1 watt per cm2.
But there is still a risk of a spark caused by a phone's defective battery. This chance ( though an unlikely to happen) could also occur in the case of the car's battery. The possibility is remote but why do we have such signs?
The legal side of the defence has it that the sign is usually put up as the fulfilment of duty to warn customers of a latent risk. The sign reduces the chance of foreseeable accident which details that a plaintiff should have thought twice before engaging in a risky behaviour and exonerating the fueling stations from being liable for damages or compensation.
Mythbusters did a video here where they confirmed that it was a myth but named another culprit to the fires; static electricity.
Static Electricity, the Culprit?
The report from the Petroleum Equipment Institute, showed there have been over 200 documented incidents at petrol stations related to fires or explosions at filling stations caused static electricity, but they have been unable to link anyone to cell phones.
Cell phones continue to be cited as causing fires at the pump in e-mails circulating on the Internet. So far we have been unable to document any incidents that were sparked by a cellular telephone. Source
What is static electricity?
Electric charge that has accumulated on an object. Static electricity is often created when two objects that are not good electrical conductors are rubbed together, and electrons from one of the objects rub off onto the other. Source
Static electricity is that thing that shocks you after you drag your feet against the rug carpet. It is capable of igniting fuel vapour as you could see in this video here.
Ways to prevent fire due to static electric during fueling
Fill portable containers on the ground and never in or on your vehicle. The container may have a static charge that would be absorbed by the earth. See my article on electric earth and how it works here.
If you are the one pumping the gas, release static charges as you get out of the car by just by using your bare hands to touch the metal top of your vehicle.
If a fire ensues, leave the nozzle in the car as removing it spreads the fire even faster causing more harm to people around.
Also on a self-service pump, never re-enter your car till you are through with pumping.
According to the Petroleum Equipment Institute website in July 2016, fire incidence due to static electricity had not been reported to them since 2010 due to an onboard vapour recovery system adopted in passenger vehicles. But it is better safe than be sorry.
That means no phones, Bluetooth, radio or Wi-Fi.
The reason is it is where Green Bank (a 13,000 square foot) National Radio Quiet Zone is located.
The FCC wanted to protect the government telescope (Green Bank Telescope) a big steerable telescope from man-made interference.
Conclusion
Since there is a chance that it may prove to be dangerous in using your cell phone so why not behave like the good people of Green Bank and keep away from your phone during the during of the fueling? The people of Green Bank wouldn't have to worry about whether to use the cellphone or not in filling stations since they do not have one :)
More Resource on this: 1,2,3,4.
I have always thought that those signs at fueling stations saying that moblie phones cause fire is overrated. I always leave my cellphone on. I have also seen some people answer phone calls at the fueling stations and nothing happens. But i think now, i will have to change from that to avoid testing my Creator. This post is very informative.✌
Just be safe and do not steem while refueling :)
Thanks for this information @greenrun
It is sad that most of us cannot do a second without our phone with us. That is why you will even see an attendant in the fueling station reply whatsapp messages or receive calls while attending to customers.
Thanks for sharing.
Much love @funkylove
We are fighting the addiction gradually.
Hmmmm it will be better if we can fight it gradually and not get trapped up by it finally.
I second that thought.
I might try if I have not found steemit!
Lol. Addicted much?
I guess!?
these are definitely tips i'd adhere to.
fires at fuel stations are as dangerous as they can get.
but i wonder how the people of greenbank cope without a cellphone. :/
As scary as it might sound, there is life before cellphone.
lol, true
but its obvious that living without something that doesn't exist is far easier than living without something that exists
Hmmm..... Thanks for the tips given in this post, it surely is very useful to forestall such incidents from happening, since there is a possibility.
wow nice info
It's sad how some people don't even take these things serious when in the filling station.
Informative, finally an explanation to why i should not pick mamas call at the gas station
Thank you.
Very informative indeed. I have always had this fear because of the sign I see at petrol stations and I try not to answer calls. It couldn't have been placed there for fancy and your post has given me a better understanding.
Thanks a lot. I am glad that the post was useful to you. Merry Christmas to your family and you.
I wish you and your family the best of the season. Merry Christmas and a super prosperous new Year.
Thank you and do have a good one too.
Making a call while trying to buy fuel has caused a lot of fire outbreaks in some filling station.
Or using a phone close to a fuel tanker can also make it explode.
Got a case of any documented accident? Please did you read the part of static electricity?
This is informative ..kudos @greenrun
I'm glad you find it so.
Nice work dear... So true!
Thank you.
I heard of recent a woman who got involved in an explosion for receiving calls while refilling gas
Could it be the same lady @gloglo was referring to?
Yes
It is better to be safe than sorry. Thanks for the work and clearing up this issue. Well done.
That is very true. Thank you
Two days back, one state commissioner's wife died while fueling was going on as she was on call. I do not have details but its not longer news that people should keep their phones aside at the fuel stations- yet most people would not adhere.
These things are tricky, it so happen that once people are feeling their cars or something... all of a sudden one important call will come in. Very funny though.
Simple instructions should remain simple not complicated. Thanks for sharing
Really? That was a sad news. Was it verified that it was the cell phone caused the fire?
Wow .
Surprisingly experienced this tonight but was the case of a generator.
A friend warned me about using my phone ad a torchlight; I did pay ears to him. Just for him to have his way because I always thought it was exaggerated.
Quite true though
But like you said I would learn to behave like the Green Bank citizen. You never can tell.
Thanks for sharing this beautiful and educative post.
Thank you for your reply to this post. It is always ok to err on the side of caution.
why always take the risk be safe :) good article with amazing information :)
Thank you
Saw a scary picture of Nigerian whose phone exploded on her ear while answering a call on a service (filling) station and that was a wake up call to me.
I will never do that again.
Never
That was a sad occurrence
yeah people keep saying that finally we have a technical answer to it thanks to you :)
I hope the answer satisfies them.
Very True, 100% facts. I don't make that mistake when am in a fuel station. Great content
I don't even use my phone in most public places. Thanks for reading.
Very nicely described very easily in simple way and cleared many misconceptions thanks for sharing
Thank you for reading.
i never used the cell phone near filling station but its good to not use when using these things
That is what I think is being a safety conscious person. Not a bad thing.
I refuse to Steem while at the gas station LOL.
A smart decision. Thanks.
I love most of your post very educative.trully fuel is highly inflammation
Thank you.
