Electricity is the fuel of both cryptocurrencies and the CERN... scientific researches are heavily bounded to electricty capacity of switzerland and france.. when the winter comes CERN pays more and more for electricty price..
So, why doesn't CERN start a blockchain.. a cryptocurrency or a smart contract... to participate people of the world to scientific discoveries rather than the governments only mode!

By the way, the LHC is shutdown during winter for several reasons. Electricity costs is one of them.
Yes... bitcoin and altcoins possibly consume much more electricity than CERN collider tests.
CERN can utilize blockchain... wait for CERNcoin... or COLLIDEcoin :)
Try Gridcoin. There are a few LHC projects attached to it, but you should ask @dutch about that. He knows better than I do (actually, I don't know).
