There is also a historical background about forbidding to eat pig meat. In old times there wasnt well constructed settlements. The substructure was poor and toilet wastes were a big problem.
Remember in France there were no toilets in the houses like many European countries. They were throwing away the wastes from the window. For more information search for the history of umbrella and parfume. In london (just 150 years ago) there were even treasure hunters as a serious job who were searching for worthy things inside the human toilet wastes which are collected in the backyards or in the gardens of the houses.
Most of the settlements were lack of any system to eliminate human toilet waste so there were toilets with pigs living inside. The mission of these pigs were to eat and make dissapear the wastes. Of course this dangerous tasks were bringing some diseases so these pigs werent sold for food consumption but of course there were some people who were selling them. So its a high probability that to prevent from these kind of unfair trades the meat of the pig is forbidden or open the way to avoid pig eating in certain cultures.

Ok, I didn't know that. If it is true, that's quite disgusting but I bet the main concern now is how those pigs are kept in factories and farms. They can't free roam and often stuck in a room full of pigs which gave them fewer choices to find clean mud to wallow in. It's dirty and predisposed them to numerous skin conditions.
