Final Score: Dominic Thiem demolished Novak Djokovic 7-6-3 6-0. Dominick's Key To The Victory: aggressiveness, backhand down the line, and kick serve. What Was Wrong With Djokovic' Game: Every f-ing thing. Unforced Errors Versus Winners: Thiem 38-28, Djokovic 18-35 (never seen Djokovic failing so hard). Previous Meetings: 5-0 in Djokovic' favor. Yup, no one expected Thiem to win, not to talk about his complete domination.
Tennis fans waited for this match with high anticipation. The youngster, no. 7 in the world, Dominic Thiem came into Rollan Garros ready to dominate the court, and he already proved himself in France winning all 12 sets he played. Also, this clay season was terrific for Dominic thus far: he went to the finals in Barcelona and Madrid (lost both of them to Nadal, but that's like losing to God), beat Nadal in Rome's quarterfinals. I don't know what you think, but Dominic is definitely one of my picks to become world's NO. 1 soon.
Also, we have to acknowledge the fact that Dominic Thiem spends more time training than anyone else on tour. Philipp Kohlschreiber said that he never saw anyone training as hard as Dominic. And that's the fact that this kid spends hours on the court, mastering his techniques. There is still some place to improve, but his backhand down the line is probably the best on tour alongside Wawrinka at the moment.
Novak Djokovic came into this match with low self-esteem and some personal problems which kept him away from his best form. For the last 12 months, Djokovic was not the same, and his performance in Roland Garros before the match with Thiem proved the talks that Djokovic has too little motivation to accomplish anything this year. Yes, he won his matches, but against weaker opponents and with a lot of struggles. And yet, he was still a clear favorite to beat Dominic Thiem as he had a perfect 5 from 5 against Dominic in previous encounters. Also... remember that it is Novak Djokovic we are talking about.
First Set
The wind was super strong to start the game, and it felt that players were having a hard time to adjust. Novak Djokovic made some unexpected unforced errors early in the set, and Dominic Thiem took his chance and broke Djokovic' serve. However, he Dominic could not defend his serve, made some silly mistakes and let Djokovic back into the set.
We all know what happens when Djokovic feels some fear on the other side of the court. In no time, Djokovic broke Thiem again and took the command of the set, 4-2. That's when all the interesting things started to happen. Djokovic made 2 double faults, a backhand error, a forehand error, and Thiem broke back. Both players were not playing their best tennis due to the wind, but they defended their serve from that point and went straight to a tie-break.
To be honest, it was a terrible tie-break. Both players kept making mistakes, starting with Thiem's double fault, followed by Djokovic' backhand errors. Thiem got himself back together faster, tho, and won the set after just another Djokovic' mistake.
Second Set
Everyone, including me, expected Djokovic to come into the second set with more energy and instantly break Thiem. However, Djokovic started the second set playing even worse than he did on the first set and lost first 3 games. After that, Thiem easily defended his serves and took comfortably took the second set 6-3.
That's when everyone started questioning if Djokovic is still the same man we were used to seeing for the last 7 years or so. Joe McEnroe said, "Djokovic made his career on comebacks," but this time it was hard to imagine Djokovic winning the match. Sadly, he looked like a man without any motivation. His mind was wondering off the court all the time, and his body could not hit that ball properly. Also, the fact that Andre Agassi, the former world's NO. 1 and Djokovic' coach, came to the match and instantly left, which did not help at all. I would say that Djokovic got devastated even more when he realized that he was all alone on this one. He lost his motivation.
Third Set
That was single-handedly the worst set I have ever seen Djokovic playing. He lost the set 6-0 with completely no chance of winning at least a single game. It was painful to see how Djokovic hated being on the court. Also, Djokovic' best backhand in the world was not working at all and Thiem took advantage of it. As for Dominic Thiem, he just did what he had to do, kicking that ball up high and hit some power shots down the line. He was not playing his best tennis, but he was solid for sure. I would still say that it was Djokovic who lost the game rather than Dominic winning it. And yet, if someone is to beat Nadal this year, it is definitely Dominic Thiem, as this youngster has enough potential to demolish any player on tour on a given night.
So, we are heading to the semi-finals where Nadal will take on Thiem. It will be an interesting match, I can guarantee that. Even though Dominic Thiem's chances of winning against Nadal on clay are close to zero (just like anyone else's), he has enough weapons to put up a fight. And Djokovic will have to watch that match on TV with his family. Maybe it is for the better as his wife is pregnant with the second child and Djokovic clearly wants to spend more time with his family. Also, he is getting older, and his curve is going down. Only very few players managed to keep playing at the highest level while getting older and I guess upcoming few years will show if Djokovic will become one of those players.
great story, but it is spelled "roland" garros just saying !
