Bonzie Colson is back for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish basketball team and just in time to keep hope alive for their 2017-2018 season. Notre Dame started the season with National Championship goals and they came out of the gate with a bang. The Fighting Irish would win their first six games and be crowned the champion of the Maui Invitational. And Bonzie Colson was the main reason for the early success.
Colson would score 22 points on December 30th when Notre Dame would beat Georgia Tech 68-59, but that would be his last action until tonight. Colson suffered a bad injury and was out for several weeks. They were off to a 13-3 start but then took a nose dive with Colson out of the line up and lost 7 straight games. It looked as if their season was over and there was little hope of redemption. But his teammates would win 5 of their next 7 and keep their name fresh in the bubble world for the NCAA Tournament.
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish would get their star player back tonight for the first time since that December night. Although Colson played limited minutes, he was still able to score 12 points and give one hell of an emotional boost to his team. They would win easily with a score of 73-56 over Pittsburgh. They only have one more regular season game left on Saturday and it will be a daunting one. They travel to the number one team in the nation, the Virginia Cavaliers. Sitting at 8-9 in ACC play, Colson and the Irish could have a signature win that might catapult them into an at large big into the NCAA Tournament.
The selection committee takes injuries to stars into serious contention. Clearly, Notre Dame is a MUCH different team with Bonzie Colson healthy than without him. But Notre Dame still has to string together some wins in the ACC tournament next week. They must pass they eye test and hope that they look convincing enough to get the stamp of approval from the committee.
