Late post about 1990 Silver Panda 😅

Sorry for my late post, I was going to make a new post but was too busy during this week and partying too much this weekend...

Anyway today I would like to talk about 1990 silver panda. It is the 2nd silver panda in brilliant uncirculated condition, and the first to have different varieties.

As you can see in the picture above showing Temple of Heaven on the coin obverse, there are two major varieties of the 1990 silver pandas: Large Date and Small Date. The Large Date coins were struck at the Shanghai Mint (shown on the left) and, as their variety name suggests, have a larger size date than coins struck in Shenyang (shown on the right). The Large Date Shanghai coins are considered to be the more common of the two 1990 silver panda varieties.

The reverse for both 1990 Large Date and Small Date panda are the same, although pandas in different years can sometimes have different varieties on the reverse, most notably on the bamboo twigs and leaves.

The other "variety" is its Proof version which I wish to own someday 😄. It was struck only at the Shanghai Mint. With letter "P" labeled on the right side of the Panda as shown in the link. Speaking of Proof Panda, there is also 1989 Silver proof panda which I forgot to mention on my previous post 😅

Total mintage for 1990 BU silver pandas in both varieties is 200,000, and the proof 20,000. 1990 is a transitional year for Panda coins. The mania of the 80s had ended but planned mintages were only slowly reduced to reflect that new reality. The market was later recovered between the late 90s and early 2000, making the early Pandas more valuable to Panda collectors.
