Adding to the stack! ...another 4 Troys to love!

in #steemsilvergold6 years ago

Greetings Stackers!

I recently picked up some rounds to add to the stack and wanted to show em' to you. I hope you enjoy the post!

Some time back, our friend @raybrockman started a raffle (https://steemit.com/steemsilvergold/@raybrockman/let-s-give-it-away). The timing was great! I've noticed everyone on this tag going on and on about Englehard so I looked into it, and really liked the Prospector round. Sure enough, when I saw the raffle post I entered. I did not win. Stackitis is bad, but fantasizing about a coin, getting your hopes up, then NOT getting it, is worse I think. I couldn't leave it alone, so I bought that guy outright, along with a few others. Here he is:

by the way, seriously considering a Mene ring upgrade. 18k is nothing compared to real shiny

So what's the big deal about Englehard anyway? From https://goldprice.com/engelhard-silver-bars:

The Engelhard Corporation was founded by Charles Engelhard in 1902. In the following years he made many business acquisitions, converting the company into the world's largest precious metal refinery and developing silver alloys for industrial applications. He is also credited with inventing liquid gold for decorative purposes.

THE ENGELHARD COMPANY
In 1958 his son, Charles Jr., formed Engelhard Industries, an umbrella corporation for the family's companies, and listed it on the New York Stock Exchange.

Further mergers and acquisitions saw saw Engelhard Industries expand into the chemical and mineral industries, and Engelhard is even credited with developing the first production catalytic converter.

Finally, in 2006, Engelhard was purchased by the German company BASF, which has proceeded to gradually eliminate the Engelhard name, relegating the former Fortune-500 company to the history books.

During the inflationary crisis and oil crunch of the 1970s, interest in silver bullion as a form of wealth protection grew in popularity. As a result of the demand, Engelhard began minting silver bars with weights of 1, 10 and 100 troy ounces. However, by the mid 1980s investor interest in precious metals had waned to the point that Engelhard decided to cease extruding silver bars.

Despite this very brief history, Engelhard silver bars remain the industry standard in silver bars. They are sought after for their guaranteed purity, quality and brand name recognition. The Engelhard name remains a trusted and recognized icon in the precious metals industry and their silver bars remain in high demand.

Engelhard silver bars have not been produced since the mid 1980s

NICE

This got me thinking of that whole period of time. I was in diapers so remained oblivious to all this but as I learned more about the Hunt brothers and their attempt to corner the Silver market, along with the Government's reaction, things started to fall into place for me. I'm no historian but after a few articles in Wikipedia here is my takeaway:

Inflation was already bad. Hunt brothers had Billions worth of Silver hoarded in a deliberate effort to manipulate prices upwards. They presumably weren't part of the "in" crowd so after Tiffany Co. and many others made a lot of noise, congress authorized the sale of Silver from the strategic stockpile. Silver was dumped onto the market and prices plummeted. Hunt brothers got screwed. I'm still not sure if this was good or bad, but I'm now living an hour south of San Francisco and had to grab a few of these when I saw them:

This next one is just cool looking! The Geiger site says a bunch about security and whatnot, but I got it because its a square bar and something I'm not used to seeing. I'm pretty sure someone posted about this one before. "...this is my Geiger. There are many like it, but this one is mine..." (LOL) and I love it!
