My small, but growing stack:
I started stacking some silver bullions after I got my Steem coins ( @raybrockman warned me that buying silver could be addictive, he was right).
The main reason is that I think this is a good time to buy silver, as the silver price is pretty low.
I think it is possible that 2018 (Year of the Dog) could be a very good year for silver.
Year of the Dog is also my own year (born in 1982), so looking really forward to 2018. Next Year of the Dog is then in 2030. Who knows how much Bitcoin is worth then (0 - $100 millions is my best guess).
Last time I bought silver was just before the parabolic rise in 2011 (up to $50/ oz).
I like this visual presentation of how small the physical silver market really is:
So why bullions?
Last time I bought physical silver at BullionVault, ETNs and ETFs.
My main argument is that is find these silver coins really beautiful, and it is a good feeling to have some tangible assets too.
The numismatic value can actually increase quite a lot if you buy the right coins.
Buying strategy:
I will only buy 1 oz bullion standard silver coins (for now).
I am a very metaphysical, and I will only buy silver coins that have a personal meaning to me.
Steem coins is a no brainer of course: Huge personal meaning!
I am also very into thinks like the Chinese Zodiac, and it is pretty cool that there is such a wide variety of lunar series.
Thus, I am going to collect all the relevant lunar series out there.
Current hodlings:
5 Steem
Perth Mint Lunar Series
3 2018 Year of the dog
4 2017 Year of the rooster
Royal Mint Lunar Series (Complete)
4 2018 Year of the dog
4 2017 Year of the rooster
4 2016 Year of the monkey
3 2015 Year of the sheep
3 2014 Year of the horse
Silver Shield Lunar Series (Minimintage, 1513 coins)
10 2017 Year of the rooster
5 Maple Leafs
I have also ordered the first mintage of the Rwanda lunar series from Apmex.
The design looks absolutely fantastic!
Thor is my favourite God (the destroyer archetype):
I am looking forward to the update from @phelimint on the 2018 Steem mintage.
What about printing 1 Steem on the Steem coins, and we could use it as a legal tender between physical Steemians?
Then, I could theoretically save 25% VAT (no VAT on legal tender coins).
If I am going to sell some coins in the future I will only take Steem or SBD as a payment:)
I also love the development at #steemsilvergold. That is the perfect example on value added by the community at Steemit!
The sky is the limit (build a decentralized silver exchange etc…?)!
I am still a silver collector noob, so If you seasoned collectors have some buying tips I would gladly hear them.
Cool collection!
Those are some great pieces to start your stack. My plan was always to start by buying low premium, high mintage 1oz coins(maples, britannias, philharmonics etc) to build my stack "weight" up, but once I got into it my eye was distracted by pandas, kukaburras and other great deigns. It's not a cheap hobby, but I'm hoping my stack will increase in value as silver skyrockets(fingers crossed). Well that's my plan and good luck on yours. Happy stacking my friend
Thanks, also nice tips. I just saw that APMEX (2018 Year of the Dog)is just $18.13. Not much over spot, and still a lunar series coins.
A decentralized silver/gold exchange on SMTs perhaps ^^ ?
Exactly! I guess we are both big picture thinkers. I am not going to do something executive myself. Just brainstorming. Decentralized prec met exch. should have huge benefits.
Ain't that what logicians (INTP's ) are all about ;)? Thinking of the ideas, rather than the technological aspects that are needed ^^ (pfft even thinking about it, haha)
Spot on. It is almost scary how similar my thinking process is to fellow INTPs. You have to ponder if we all some kind of avatars (INTP, ENTJ etc).
Well I am likely to believe that we're all avatars inhabiting the human body as a sort of simulation experience ^^ But I doubt that's what u meant with it xD
Avatars inhabiting the human body as a simulation experience was exactly what I meant btw:)
The main thing is you stack what you like and that s all that matters great job man
I stack silver as well. I've only been doing so for about 3 years and I've learned that selling silver coins is NOT as easy as they portray.
How do you plan on cashing out?
Hard to tell the numismatic value of coin, but collecting cool silver coins is REALLY fun for some reason. I don't know why but the coins themselves are pieces of artwork and sometimes worth the premium for your own enjoyment.
Im thinkin about buying the chinese zodiac serie, i think they will have value, but more than anything, i think they are awesome coins!
I also noticed that most dealers will give you far below spot for a coin that isn't popularly traded. There is a coin dealer in Manhattan that I go to check out coins on consignment once in a while. They, along with many dealers will not give you spot for your silver. In a fact there is a penalty for cash as opposed to a check that gets mailed to you later. (The check value will be agreed upon at the time you hand it over though).
I tried selling a Silver mint coin, and I basically had a limitation on how many I could sell because there is an abundance of silver coins right now.
But if I sold my Official US silver eagles or a Canadian Silver Maple they would take as many as I could give them. They pay out significantly more, and people recognize them as being far more legitimate.
For this reason, I stopped buying anything outside of US Silver Eagles, and I only buy other coins for personal enjoyment.
I DO HOWEVER, want to do a run of .999 silver STEEM BU coins!!! I don't know the interest in them, but I looked at a US mint called Sunshine mint who does custom minting. They obviously could not be paired to the price of STEEM because anyone could flood the market with them, it would literally be a collectors item only, which introduces their own intrinsic value. Is anyone here interested in a run? I haven't contact them yet, but the bulk of the price is the die, of which I'm not sure which logo we should use. The new or the old. I can get something designed up and show you guys if there is enough interest.
You order on the www. or?
Hi. I ordered most of the lunar coins from goldsource. Very good prices and fast delivery. Highly recommended. Some of the older coins in the lunar series I bought on eBay. I have also bought some coins at Apmex (awaiting delivery):
Hmm. Think I am going to wish fore some silvercoins to christmas ;)
nice post
very nice you've picked up some great pieces, happy stackin' :)
Thanks!
Very nice coins,It's great to see you in the steemsilvergold club!! Cheers to Norway!
Thanks. It is snowing in Oslo right now. Got the Xmas feeling.
"Keep on Stackin"... my favorite phrase :)
My daughter just bought 2 "Norwegian Heritage" coins, which are probably worthless. But it made me interested in the whole scene. Do you have any good links to collectorpages etc to where I can read about this stuff? Like what to look out for and buy/not buy? By the way, how about customs when you order from other countries?
Hi, I am new to the scene myself, but there is a very strong silver community at Steemit. Read postsat #steemsilvergold. You can learn a lot. If you have some coins, perhaps make a post about it. Many of the coins I have bought at goldsource. They also send a weekly letter with tips etc. Youtube has of course many videos about collecting.
thank you
