Reviews game Days Gone

in #steempress6 years ago

Too crowded, too crowded, already overexploited? Gamer reactions to the games that make the zombies as the main theme is arguably, not always positive. However it is unfair to not admit that regardless of how commonly this "undead" theme is explored by video games, some end up dazzling.

Do not believe? See what Capcom has done with Dead Rising, which in some early series, featured as a serious, crazy zombie-like game. Or see how Naughty Dog made it the foundation for concocting an awesome story in The Last of Us. Now it is also the theme for the latest open-world concoction of Sony Bend Studio - Days Gone.

With the release time is still in early 2019, we had the opportunity to try out this game more quickly in E3 2018 yesterday. Sony opened the booth for the visitors, and also some lucky media to try out this game directly, accompanied by Sony Bend Studio employees who not only help you to understand what you see on the screen, but also provide extra information about what kind of content which is worth your anticipation in the later version release.

There are two scenarios offered in this demo session. The first demo is taken from the side of the story where the main character - Deacon tried to save his friend. While the second demo is a battle against the horde is super serious and super crazy, even for the business of zombie games though.

So what exactly is offered by Days Gone? Did the short demo session we felt managed to "sell" this game to us? This is the impression we feel:

Different Identity

One of the biggest questions of course leads to one thing - what differentiates this one game compared to the usual zombie games? from an open-world concept, how Deacon will rely on its bike as a "second character" to explore this world without mercy, and a progression system that will allow it to access a variety of skills that will make things easier.

its main strength lies on the side of the story itself, something you can predict from the exclusive single-player games for Playstation 4. You will be able to explore Deacon's conflicts and characters at this point, losing all that he loves, from his wife and a motorcycle gang that contains his friends. You can see how Deacon tried to deal with the trauma.

One interesting piece of information offered to you is also about factions. That Deacon's action in an existing open-world scheme, completing a side mission to another side mission will also affect his relationship with whatever group he helps. The World of Gone does contain several different groups that try to survive and "fight" on behalf of limited resources. Deacon's actions help certain factions culminate, making them hateful and hounded by other factions.

Source

More cool? This "faction" system does not just happen in humans. The monsters or infected you are dealing with are not always "friends" with each other. Some monsters will try to prey on other monsters, something you can use for strategic importance in the future.

This is also seen in the first demo session Days Gone which is focused on the existing side of the story. Taking the so-called major mission piece, still at the beginning of the story, you will play a Deacon action that is trying to infiltrate in one of the dangerous areas to look for the motor parts that it needs.

Like open-world games like this and most third person shooters, you'll have some options with Deacon. You can try to keep your Stealth playing style and kill the enemy from behind with ease. You are also provided with unlimited number of stones, which you can throw to distract the infected if you are lazy to take risks.

Sony Bend mentions that these monsters are quite sensitive to sound and visual, so you need to consider both. This means that using a firearm openly can lead to an open invitation for zombies in this game called the Freakers, to hunt you down.

The open-world scheme that carries several alternative roads to complete is indeed standard, but also interesting at the same time. One of the things that steal our most attention is the fact that in this mission too, you are introduced to a variant of Freakers called Newts.

Source

Infected as a child, Newts has a distinct characteristic of attack. As long as your HP is full, they will be scared and will not attack. But once you get into a critical phase, they will immediately hunt you mercilessly. More cool? Newts and Freakers "normal" turned out to be unfriendly. In this undead kingdom, Newts is the "food" of the Freakers and they are always hounded by larger zombies. Seeing these two variants interact makes the world of Days Gone feel cool and unique at the same time.

If you culminate getting caught and out of your stealth mode, while looking for a way to achieve the main mission already offered, you have to fight open. Deacon has a firearm of course, which despite having a loud voice, but minimal risk and deadly. While on the other hand, you also have melee weapons to use.

Source

Melee weapons in Days Gone can be destroyed if used after a few times, but the successor can be found easily along the way. Together with small materials that you can collect along the way, to simply healing to strengthen your bike later, you can also use it to strengthen your melee weapon.

Depending on the material (in our demo session, a wood-based melee weapon is upgraded), you can make your melee weapon more deadly. From a wooden board to a wooden board with sharp spikes on it? Hell yeah!

You will not only fight against the Freakers, but also a deviant religious sect that worships these monsters. Unlike the Freakers who function like zombies and try to chase you, this one group works still like human beings.

Source

Some of them will carry firearms and attempt to shoot you remotely, while supported by AIs that allow them to hide, for example. Of course, if you're smart enough, you can still finish them stealth for less risk. Fortunately, there is no limit to use for daggers used by Deacon during stealth.

So with this first demo, you can see that the format of the game that made Days Gone to encourage the story is not much different from the third person shooter games that you are familiar with. There is an extra business need to get to know the world more deeply, at least recognize who you are dealing with and how their attack patterns are.

It also allows you to use the interaction and relationships between groups / factions for your own benefit later. Unfortunately, this demo session does not show open-world exploration sessions using the Deacon motor itself.

Fight off the hordes of interest

The second demo changed almost every perspession that emerged from the first demo session, rooted as the beginning of the story to introduce various game mechanisms for gamers who enjoy Days Gone for the first time. You can view it as a tutorial mode. Therefore, the standard of experience you get is easy, where the monsters and humans you face do not offer many challenges. The real challenge and experience of Lost Day that actually lies in the next game session - against the existing Horde.

The battle scenario against the Horde will be found around mid-game which leads to the end of the game at the time of the final release. In the final version later, with the various skills you can access, you will likely end up stronger than the Deacon version we tested in this demo version. This freaker is not just a walking corpse, but an unplanned and thought-out death wave will be your biggest nightmare.

Source

The main mission for this demo is "simple" - to finish the existing Horde. For those of you who do not know, Horde here is a collection of hundreds to thousands of zombies ready to prey on you. Instead of using HP, Days Gone chooses to use an accumulative HP rod to show you the information, how many more Freaker to kill before you can count "get it done". Taking the setting on the disposal site where Freakers gather in one of the lower areas, Horde mode like this is not something you can finish just by photographing and winning. Believe me, it's harder than you think.

Why? Because every one of these Freakers runs fast and they can move and attack from so many directions. Once you are unaware and trapped, it only takes about 3 seconds for them to finish you off and you have to come face-to-face with the Game Over screen. The only way to win is to deal with it strategically.

Source

You must learn about the environment first. There will be many red barrels for you to blast to finish off large parts of them instantly. Not only that, there are also abandoned police cars that usually contain bullets and new weapons and a variety of giant trucks that although it takes extra bullets to spill, can also lead to bursting with a larger radius.

You also have to learn about which areas can be a bottleneck, where you can move freely but the zombies willy-nilly, have to pile up at one point with limited movement. A place where you can turn around and shoot for a few seconds to reduce their number. The rest? Gathering the required resources.

Source

Because not just a melee weapon alone, as long as enough material, Deacon can also mix different variants of other explosives to be used during the game, especially against Horde like this. You can create Proximity Mine if these Freakers move closer, blend napalm molotov bombs to finish them off quickly, and of course other explosive alternatives.

Preparing and throwing it at the beginning will be the most effective strategy, since it is impossible for you to turn around while throwing it fast when these Freakers have started chasing you blindly. Even the roll buttons embedded on the Deacon figure will not help much.

Source

In addition to heavy weaponry and explosives, Deacon will also be equipped with active skills that can be used to finish these zombies faster. Enabling Deacon to slow down time and shoot freely. But like a skill function in general, it takes a long enough cooldown before it can be reused.

So from the battle against the Horde, you can catch two things related to Days Gone: first, it is not easy. This is not a zombie-themed action shooter game where you are a superhero that can not die. One step, you can lead into a game and not a hunter. Second? It takes careful planning to be won, at least from the battle scenario against the Horde provided in this demo.
