In the last blog, we talked about how to write your blog on Steemit, upload pictures and formatting the article. The other important section is adding tags to your posts.
You can add only 5 tags on Steemit per post. The tag you use help categorize your content. Think of tags here as hashtags on Instagram or Twitter. People finding your blog posts or entries on Steemit largely depend on the tags you give to your entries.
Therefore, knowing the right tag for your content helps the right people to find your posts with ease. Most of the contests also use “tags” as a way to identify the post entries for a particular contest.
So, let’s dive into the tag-world on Steemit.
WHERE AND HOW TO ADD TAGS?
You might have noticed this rectangle box at the end of the page where you write your content. This is where you enter the tags for your post. On Steemit, you can add up to 5 tags. All tags are entered in small letters and in English.
Each tags are separated by a blank space. Using “Comma”, the punctuation doesn’t separate two words when you are adding tags. So, enter one tag press the spacebar and add the next one.
Eg: Use the tag “travelfeed” as “travelfeed and not “travel feed”. You can use hyphens if you wish, like, “original-post”. Writing “original post” will create two tags, “original” and “post”.
The first tag you add stays like the primary tag for your post and cannot be changed afterwards. The rest of the tags can be changed if you wish to edit later. You don’t need to put the hashtag (#) sign before the tags.
HASHTAGS
You can use hashtags to bring attention to others who are following that hashtag. You use hashtags in the body of the article and it will be highlighted. We talked about this in the previous blog on markdown on Steemit.
Few contests like Wednesday walk and Color Challenge invite entries using hashtags in the title. So, use the proper hashtags that suit the topic and type of content you are writing.
This brings to the next point, do not use any tag for any post.
USE THE RELEVANT TAGS
The tags you use in your article must compliment your content. This is the easiest way for the people who are interested in those topics can easily find you. Tags like “life” are used by many and you can find the number of posts in this category.
Since Steemit allows you to keep 5 tags on an article, try to find the categories/tags most commonly used, that are relatable to your article subject. This will be an easy way instead of creating a new one. There is no rule restricting you from creating new one though.
KNOW THE RULES OF THE TAG CONTESTS
If you are entering for a contest, then it is better to know the rules of the contest. Most of them will have a post explaining the rules you need to follow to consider your post for the contest.
For example, “travelfeed” is a very commonly used tag for travel related article entries. But to be eligible to get featured by the travel feed, you need to have at least 250 words in the article body. This will lead to your article being reviewed by a group of curators and get rewarded by the community.
“photofeed” is another such tag which is commonly used for photographic entries. The contest states some rules for the posts to be considered by the photofeed-team to feature in their daily posts.
“colorchallenge” has a pattern for their contest. You enter pic focusing a particular color each day and mention it in the title of your post.
There are many other such tags that you can use through which you can be a part of the contests that run on Steemit. It won’t be possible to list all of them here, but here are a few famous ones.
