A lot of the time it’s not hard to spot ADHD in kids. But adults can have more subtle symptoms.

This means many adults struggle with ADHD and may not even know they have it.

What parents need to know about ADHD

We recommend everyone with children or those thinking about having children to take some time and watch "The 30 essential ideas every parent needs to know" by Dr. Russell A. Barkley PH.D. (By clicking on the link below the video you will able to watch it by the different topics).

Watch Dr. Russel Barkley and his lecture about ADHD per item or topic directly on www.caddac.ca

Attention-Deficit / (Hyperactivity) Disorder, predominantly inattentive presentation is commonly known as ADHD

The 3 main characteristic of ADHD are:

  • Attention dificit (ADHD-I). They have a hard time concentrating on the same for a long time. As a result, they often prefer a job with variety, so that they do not have to be busy for the same day.
  • Hyperactivity - Impulsive (ADHD-H).They appear to act as if “driven by a motor” and struggle with self-control.
  • Combined (ADHD-C). In this type both ADHD-I and ADHD-G are expressly present and demonstrate six or more symptoms of inattention, and six or more symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity.

Those with AHDH will always have ADHD

Growing into adulthood ADHD can adopt various new expressions.

Although some symptoms will decrease with age, ADHD is a disorder that can not be cured due to the structural difference an ADHD brain has.

Up to 90 percent of all the children with ADHD will still struggle with executive dysfunction EFD, which impairs goal-directed behavior, later on in life.

AD(H)D is neurological disorders that until recently only was diagnosed on
children. However the chance that a child will outgrow ADHD is not as great
as we once thought.

Executive Function Disorder (EFD)

What Is Executive Function Disorder (EFD)?

Executive function skills enable us to plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and manage multiple tasks. People with executive function disorder (EFD) struggle to organize and regulate their behavior.

What may look like behavioral choices such as laziness, sloppiness,
and forgetfulness — are likely due to differences in brain structure.

Executive functions disorder (EFD) and ADHD are tightly linked which make it very difficult to finish tasks, stay organize or even simply being on time.

Neuroimaging the ADHD brain

Neuroimaging has revealed the structural differences in the ADHD brain.

D

Several studies have pointed to a smaller pre-frontal cortex and basal ganglia, and decreased volume of the posterior inferior vermis of the cerebellum — all of which play important roles in focus and attention.

time blinded fullheads

Some ADHD adults will summarize it's as being "time blinded fullheads"

  • Having to many thoughts
  • Can't focus long on a single thing
  • Focusing on to many things at once
  • Can't project themselves in the future
  • Wandering around in the now
  • Lack of motivation or goals
  • Uhh.. oh yes, Forgetting important stuff
  • Remembering the bullshit stuff
  • Unable to plan and organize
  • Procrastinating (delaying/postponing mostly until it's overdue)
For people not having ADHD it's very difficult to understand how the brain of someone with ADHD actually works.

If you know what this video is all about it is impossible for you to understand ADHD.

The six subtypes of ADHD

By Dr. Amen, founder of Amen Clinics, using data from more than 22 years of SPECT brain scans distinguishing seven subtypes

  • ADHD Type 1 - Classic ADHD. All the characteristics of ADD, including hyperactivity and impulsivity.
  • Type 2 - Inattentive ADHD. Or inattentive ADHD. All characteristics, but hyperactivity has been replaced by a lack of energy or motivation.
  • Type 3 - Overfocused ADHD. All the characteristics of ADHD, including hyperactivity and impulsivity. That is where negative thoughts and behavior come on top. Rebellion and argumentation are important characteristics.
  • Type 4 - Temporal Lobe ADHD. All the characteristics of ADHD, including hyperactivity and impulsivity with also intolerance, aggressiveness and memory and learning problems.
  • Type 5 - Limbic ADHD. Combines ADHD with depression and a lack of energy and motivation.
  • Type 6 - The Ring of Fire. A form of mix between ADHD and manic depression. Characteristic are mood disorders, anxiety and aggressiveness.
  • Type 7: Anxious ADHD. People with this type have hallmark ADD symptoms. They are anxious, tense, have physical stress symptoms like headaches and stomachaches, predict the worst, and freeze in anxiety-provoking situations, especially where they may be judged.
Even though the 7 types have some symptoms in common, each type also has its own set of symptoms and specific treatments.

What causes ADHD

No one knows exactly what causes ADHD, but the following things are
known to play an important role.

GENETICS:

ADHD tends to run in families and, in most cases, it's thought the genes you inherit from your parents are a significant factor in developing the condition.

BRAIN STRUCTURE:

Research has identified a number of possible differences in the brains of people with ADHD. The exact significance of these still not clear.
Certain areas of the brain may be smaller in people with ADHD, whereas other areas may be larger.

NUTRITION & FOOD:

Some experts believe that food additives may exacerbate ADHD. People use to believe that sugar may be to blame for a range of abnormal behaviors and ADHD. Most experts now believe that the link simply does not exist, and if it does, it is not a strong one.

GROUPS AT RISK ARE:

  • who were born prematurely (before the 37th week of pregnancy) or with a low birthweight
  • with epilepsy
  • with brain damage – which happened either in the womb or after a severe head injury later in life

FLUORIDE:

A study published in the Journal Environmental Health found that areas with a higher proportion of artificially fluoridated water also had a higher prevalence of (ADHD) in children.

LEAD:

Exposure to lead has also been suggested as a contributor to ADHD. Although paint no longer contains lead, it is possible that preschool children who live in older buildings may be exposed to toxic levels of lead from old paint or plumbing that has not yet been replaced.

PYRETHROID PESTICIDES:

Pyrethroid pesticides cause abnormalities in the dopamine system and produce an ADHD phenotype in animal models. Given the growing use of pyrethroid pesticides, these results may be of considerable public health import.

Someday, our understanding of the causes of ADHD may lead to
more effective therapies.

ADHD will eventually be the new normal

Recent research evidence is growing regarding the importance of genes and heritability significantly contributing to a person’s chances of an eventual diagnosis of this disorder.

More and more children will be born with ADHD simply because ADHD can
not be cured.

It is inevitable, that one day, everyone on this planet will have ADHD. Therefor the human brain is slowly evolving into an ADHD brain.

In evolutionary terms, hunter-gatherers were generalists, in that they needed to know how to do a little bit of everything to survive.

This information wasn't passed down during classroom. It was passed down from parent to child through play, observation, and informal instruction.

Children with ADHD quickly learn that the world isn't going to change for them. They are often given medication to curb the unruly and distracted behavior that can cause problems in school.
