Practical Hackspace 1: Light Diffuser for Track Lights

in #steemmakers6 years ago

Welcome to our first post! In Practical Hackspace, we will be using our maker skills in order to solve simple to complex everyday problems! If you follow along, you'll see how we use various methods such as 3D modelling, 3D printing, electronics and programming when we encounter hurdles inside and out of our makerspace/cafe. Without further ramblings, let's get on with the first Practical Hackspace!

The Problem

The building administration didn't allow us to make too much modifications that were permanent in the space that we are renting. So to ensure the proper lighting of the cafe area, we decided to have a ceiling trellis made where we can install track lights.

We've been having a lot of feedback from customers and personal experiences where the track lights we had installed were too bright and harsh on the eyes. We wish we had some form of light diffuser so we only need to squint when we are thinking really hard!

The Solution

Being the makers and problem solvers that we are, we decided to make some measurements of the track lights and custom fabricated this nifty light diffuser!

We modelled it with OpenSCAD (we are mainly programmers so this just came out naturally 😉) and then 3d printed the model in black PLA filament. For the light diffusion itself, we decided to use some spare wax paper.

Combining the two, we get the finished light diffuser below:

You can actually adjust the diffusion by adding or subtracting more wax paper sheets inside the 3d printer diffuser. Now we can sleep better at night knowing we're not causing anyone headaches 😆😆😆
