If you’re finding it difficult to achieve with your goal setting, it’s tempting to just walk away or stop trying. I often hear people saying something like “Maybe this is just it” or “I’ve tried my best but nothing seems to be working so I’ll settle for what I have instead”. I observed that many people don’t even understand why they need to set goals..
Why Have Goals Anyways?
In order to get to where you want to be, you must set goals. I believe that goals are the navigational system to get to your destination and in order to get to where you want to be, you need to set goals. In short, if you ever want to succeed, you need to set goals. Without it comes lack of focus and direction just like scalar quantity in physics. So here I’m going to show you 6 pillars of goal setting. Apply them into your life and you will see change drastically. But before I talk about them, let me explain some basis for you first before the main thing.
What is Goal Setting?
source
Goal setting does not only allows you to take charge of your life direction but also gives you a benchmark for determining your progress either you are actually succeeding or not. The truth is that you have a purpose and your goals will help you to get there even faster now. It is being defined as the process of deciding what you want to accomplish and developing a plan to achieve the result. From this definition, I see three key parts from it. The first part is that you need to do more than deciding what you want to do or accomplish; you also need to work at accomplishing whatever the goal you’ve set for yourself. Secondly, you need to create a plan.
A goal without a plan backing it up is just a wish.
How Do I Get Into Setting Goals?
Well it all started when I wanted to make a change in my life and I realized that I wasn’t going into the right direction. I realized that I can’t go far if I don’t inculcate the habit of setting goals. I became motivated in setting goals when I read a book written by Myles Munroe where he asked that “Where is the richest place on earth?” and I began to imagine Paris, Ottawa, New York and the likes. But his answer was so astonishing. He said that the richest place on earth is the graveyard cos inside it you will find dreams that weren’t accomplished such as songs, houses, inventions, drama and the likes. Then I realized I wasn’t living my dream. This was what led me into goal setting in the first place because I realized that I can’t achieve what I truly desire without setting and making plans in order to achieve it. So from there I used kaizen commonly referred to as one minute principle(a Japanese technique) which I used in doing things and forming new habits. I wrote that 20 things I wanted to do which I eventually did. So I’m going to share with you what I refer to as the 6 pillars of goal setting.
The 6 Pillars of Goal Setting
The first pillar is WHY source
Have you ever wondered why you want to do or achieve something? Why do you want to do it? Why do you want to make the change? Why do you want to make a difference? Why do you want to be rich? Why do you want to be successful? It all starts with why, because when you know why you want to do something, how to do it becomes easier. The why of a thing gives you reason(s) for doing it what you are doing or about to do. Now there’s a why for everything you do in your life why your body looks the way? Why you’re in this financial position? Why your family is the way it is? So it’s crucial that you figure out why your current circumstance is the way it is right now.
Over the years I discovered (mostly reading or watching their autobiographies) that very successful people out there and I I noticed that they looked into their childhood and they looked up into their upbringing and they realized why they’re doing what their currently doing. They realize where the passions were developed and what fuelled them to get to where they are right now. So start figuring out why you want to do what you’re about to do. Why do you want to lift weights, make money or build a following on social media because when the why gets bigger, the how gets easier once you figure out why you want to do something the second pillar comes in place.
The second pillar is WHAT source
Here is where you figure out what you want to do. So let’s say for instance you came from a poor environment and you want to become rich because you understand that wealth is the greatest way to alleviate poverty. What this does is that it gives you momentum, fuel in the fire and now you know what you want to do. But not only that; you think about the kind of product or the service that you want to offer to the marketplace, you think about what industry you can get into to help you to become wealthier in the fastest way possible. Keep in mind you might know why you want to do something and what to do but you also want to make sure that you love it. Make sure that it’s something that can fuel you for the next 20 years or more. It’s a vehicle that’s going to lead you to success and happiness and also prosperity. Once you figure why you’re doing something, then you figure out what you’re going to do and then you got to make sure that not only is it going to make you money but also make you happy, keep you healthy, connect you with people that can help you reach your biggest goals.
The third pillar is WHO source
In this area, you need to know the type of person you’ll will be doing it with. Probably you want to lose weight, your spouse can be a motivating factor for you. You have to figure out exactly who you want to do business with. Some people want to help you while some people want to hurt you – that’s just a natural law of life but you got to figure out exactly who your customers are.
Tip: Create a list of who is who in every area of your life. Who are your competitors, suppliers, leaders, teachers, the people you admire the most (ask them questions if you are opportune to meet them one-on-one, mail them, phone, connect with them on social media and also read about them especially biographies) and once you start figuring out who you really want to interact with, how to do it will become even easier.
The fourth pillar is WHEN source
This has to do with figuring out when you want to do it i.e. when do you want to accomplish your goals? Try to figure out a time frame that’s conducive to your own success. Personally, I’m a big believer in setting short-term goals and long-term goals. For instance, I can think about what I want to do in the next 24 hours but I can also think about what I want to do in the next 24 years. You have to be able to think and expand your consciousness further than you can even imagine. Sometimes they may even turn out better than you pictured but that’s the key; you have to figure out exactly what you want to do and even leave room for improvement and potential growth.
The fifth pillar is WHERE source
This is vitally important because a lot of people don’t even think about it. They just assume that they’re stuck to their location, don’t think they can move and the fact is that you’re more mobile than you think you are. Imaging you want to start a business and you establish it in a wrong location. This can hurt your business very bad. Where you want to do business, where do you want to manufacture the kind of results that you’re looking to achieve are all the factors associate with this pillar. Once you pick a place decide to move there at once or even stay in the same location but go to different places within that location. In order to figure out where you want to be, you have to keep two things in perspective which are
To learn as much as you can: is it just the kind of place that can teach you how to become the person you want to be? Opportunity: is it the kind of place that can give you the opportunities that will lead you into the fulfilling career that you’re searching for?
The sixth pillar is HOW source
This pillar is about the steps that you need to take in order to get into that direction but more importantly what is the priority of those steps. Because you see a lot of people know what to do but they don’t know which order in which to do it and so that ends up confusing them and ends up throwing them off. Make sure you prioritize your actual steps so that it can lead you into the direction of your dreams now.
So I’ve given you six pillars in order to help you reach your goals if you like any of these in particular please comment in the section below and make sure you Resteem this to friends
