Being a brand new teacher at a new school or maybe even a new city can be very stressful. But fear not!

Every situation or reaction from a child can be dealt with in a positive or even educational manner from your side. This might be easier said than done but with these tips you might find some clarity and maybe you won't want to pull out your hair or scream at the top of your lungs that much.

In the first part of this post you will find different tools to assist you in the behavioural management of children in your classroom.

- Physical activity -
This is a very important part in a child's life and everyday routine. Should the class get a bit rowdy or out of control, let them all get up and stretch for a few seconds, sing a song or dance on the spot. This will detract them from the task at hand and give them the mental break needed to carry out the task with no further distraction or interruption.

- Sweating? Don't let them catch on -
If you feel you are losing control over the class, do not let the kids see you are getting emotional or distressed. Take a couple of deep breathes, take a step back and react in a calm manner. As soon as they see you are overwhelmed they will pray on your weakness and there is no way to go back from that. Make a rational decision on how to move forward, you will think clearer once you are calm and collected.

- Rewards chart -
Get a system in place so that the children understand that if they perform a task well and follow instructions, they will be rewarded. Put up a chart where the whole class can see it with all the children's names. Once a child gets rewarded, let them put a golden star or something similar, next to their own name. This will give them a sense of pride and approval to encourage future behaviour. This will also mean, if they misbehave, they will have to remove the golden star from their name and this will ensure them thinking twice before doing the same in the future.
