How Theater Helps The Development Of Students

in #steemiteducation6 years ago (edited)

I did some performing arts (theater) while I was getting my degree in education. And it was a great opportunity to see . I've always been a fan of fine arts, specially films. I do not only enjoy a good flick, but also I like to through the experience the director what the audience to have.

And when I put myself in the shoes of any stage performer, I could comprehend the art behind it, and how it relates so close with all the emotions every human being have. It also gave a lot of perspectives on how each person see the world through their own eyes and concepts.

Probably many of you have done the same in school, playing the usual characters from Shakespeare's famous plays. But have you ever noticed that such experience has helped you in a certain way.

I realized of this through my own experience, and I want to share some of things which I consider are valuable.

Shyness

Some students are irrevocably shy. They want to be a little more outgoing, but the environment may seem to them a little oppressing. And they restrain to show themselves. But when they play somebody else in any play, they can test first how to maneuver through diverse situations in the skin of another person (character).

And since his real self is momentarily at ease, because he's playing a role, the reactions and moments are handled through the character. The shy student can see it like a practice as if he or she were in a simulator before venturing into coming out with his own self.

Students can also slip parts of their own personalities with that of the roles they play. They can mix them all, gaining at the same time a lot of insights. My point here is that performing arts like theater can definitely help students be more sociable and have a high self-stem.

It helps students to manage their emotions

The main feature of every human is emotion. It's something which is inherent to us as it were programed before birth. But that's not a problem. The hard thing is to manage them, and learn how to live with them.

This is one of the hardest thing in life. And it is really the one that makes everyone of us grow. So, how can we use theater to help us deal with them?

Like any actor or actress, each performer has to imbue his character with a set of emotions. And then it is supposed that the person goes through a journey with a goal ahead where he must learn how to swim through waves of feelings. As a sponge, he's absorbing everything that is thrown at him. And since his path is only forward, because he cannot go back, he will have to eventually deal with his emotions.

So, while we're performing, we are dropped in different scenarios that pull us to commit ourselves into dealing with a particular emotion. And if the play has a purpose that moves your character, you can see how your interaction progresses along the development of your character.

And to me, this is very useful, not only because we are in contact with our emotions, but also because we're constantly learning how to handle them.

It makes us strong

Going through difficult situations build our character. And much of it depends on how efficient we manage our feelings. Throughout all the stages of life, we sometimes get overwhelmed. We make decisions based on the current emotions, because we want to feel safe. However, that's the origin of many mistakes.

That's why it is advisable not to take drastic decisions on the spur of the moment when a certain feeling swamps us.

And because theater requires us to use our emotions in order to make the character look believable to the eyes of the audience, we are compelled to face circumstances which can be pretty similar to real life.

To summarize the main points, due to the applicability of theater, here are the benefits a student, or any person can get from this fine art.

  • It can eradicate shyness.

  • Boost our self-stem.

  • It helps us deal with our feelings.

  • It fortifies us

I personally have never been in theater, however from past experience with friends who had been in theater I find this article very compelling. Great work, gave you a follow and look forward to more :)

Hi @mobarakmohamed. Those who have done theater got more than just the experience, they have also learnt about life and themselves as well.
