Very interesting read. I agree with you, the student wasn't disrespectful. Like you said, school work is too much stress, a little fun/ jokes helps ease the tension and give a relax room for learning.
For me, I can never grab anything in a serious tense atmosphere, reason I never really liked attending some of my classes while I was in school.
