Writing letters are not something we really do anymore. People now send emails or messages on their phones, but it is always special to get a hand written letter.
Today we are going to learn how to write a letter, but first we will read a letter and answer some questions on it and then you will write your own.

Dear Andile
Planet Earth to Andile….. It has been ages since I heard from you.
I thought you have moved to Mars or something. I have exciting news. My dog Spot had four puppies. They are so beautiful and fluffy. My dad says I can’t keep them all. Would you like one?
I remember how sad you were when Rufus died. There is one little one with a black spot over his eye and it makes him look like a pirate. He is active and friendly just like you.
Ask your parents if you can have him. Just think how great it would be if one of my dogs could live in your house.
My mother is calling me to go do my chores and I also have to feed the puppies and clean up. They can make such a mess but they are very very cute. Hope to hear from you soon.
Your buddy
Dave
- Who is Dave writing to?
- Why is he writing the letter?
- Write three to five sentences, re-telling the main purpose of this letter.
- If you write to your grandmother you will start and end (the greeting) the letter in a different manner - How will you rather write it?
- What would your response be to this letter if you were Andile?
Now lets have a look at how to write a friendly letter (These are letters that you will write to friends and family)
Before you write your letter, follow the following steps
- Plan what you want to say in the letter.
- Write the first draft (this is just where you write what you think)
- Edit and read you letter and make sure you correct your spelling errors or add or remove from the letter you wrote.
- Write the letter out neatly.
Choose who you would like to write a letter and inform them about what is going on in your live at the moment.
After you have written your letter you maybe want to post it. You cannot post a letter if you do not have an envelope, a stamp and the address of the person you want to send it to.
Put the letter in the envelope, add the address on the outside. put on a stamp and go to the post office to post it. It will take a while for the letter to reach its destination - not nearly as fast as the emails we can send and get an instant reply.
Have fun writing and posting a letter - it is not something people do a lot by at least you can say you have done it.

Wow, I remember now that could take a couple of days to write letter before posting it. Do people still appreciate hand written missives? I'm not sure.
My little ones get very excited if they can write a letter and post it, because most of them hear their parents or grandparents talk about it but have never experienced it.
You obviously are writing to the wrong people if they do not appreciate your effort hahaha
The truth is I don't receive any hand written letters at all. Just the bills on slow mail. 😀
I feel your pain ....
Unfortunately me too
