Education is hailed as an extremely important area. Many view it as a way to end poverty for certain families. Some make a business out of it since families are willing to pay a high price to equip their children with every possible edge to get them ahead. Many buy into the idea that education is not only the great equalizer, but a secret weapon of some sort to get people ahead in life.
However, with each passing year, as more and more students graduate high school and college, I do wonder.. Is it enough? It seems as if education has over the years transformed into an experience that you have to go through. Somewhat like getting into a fist fight or even falling from a bicycle. It has lost its meaning from being a learning experience. In fact, all this can be linked to the story of the pineapple.
Back When It Was Rare...

If you look into the history of the pineapple, you will find that when it has a fascinating story. When it was first discovered by Christopher Columbus, pineapples quickly became a symbol of power, wealth and prestige among the rich and powerful . The fruit was tasty, but it was its scarcity and rarity that made it so desirable. The fruit was even rented out to be displayed at dinner parties until it rots away.
Pineapples were incredibly difficult to come by due to the lack of refrigeration, so it was more than likely to spoil in transit. However, a small group of very wealthy elites were able to build glass houses to grow pineapples. In many ways, this is similar to education. It wasn't that long ago when education was a privilege, reserved only for royalty and those who are wealthy enough to afford it. Much like pineapples, education was not meant for all.
However, much like the invention of refrigeration and the many many pineapple plantations that sprung up throughout the world to meet its demand, pineapple slowly lost its appeal. It wasn't long before it became common to see pineapples being sold. The same can be said about education, as more funding was poured into education, it started to lose its prestige.
We Can Do So Much More

Even when education has lost its prestige, it has moved into something akin to mass production. Students are sent to school, educated and as they leave school, they are given a piece of paper certifying their qualifications. This is no different from the mass production of pineapples. With the many plantations and methods to increase the yield of the fruit, there is an over-excess of the fruit.
To deal with this, many have sought to transform pineapple into other products, such as jams, sweets and many more. That has happened to education but only to a certain extent. Education has remained largely unchanged after so many years. Sure, we do have some new techniques and tools to boost acquisition of knowledge, but just like boosting the yield of pineapple production, application of knowledge and creativity is lacking. An example is seen in what we learn in school. We may be able to apply what we learn in exams but how well are we able to use it other situations? In other words, the knowledge learnt may not be enough to help prepare us for the uncertain future that we may face.
Perhaps we should look to the different products that pineapple has been made into and see how we can implement education in other areas aside from school. We could implement education on the blockchain or even on Steemit. It is unheard of but certainly not impossible. Education should be done out of school, converted into different products and implemented in different mediums. You don't have to pick up skills just from reading and until we recognize it, we may be stuck with the same principles and techniques in education.
Moving forward

However, even after we have managed to revolutionize how education is delivered, we still have to move forward. Education may be the great equalizer, but lets be realistic, with so many having degrees and some sort of education, education is not the competitive edge anymore. To move forward, it takes more than a certificate. The edge that we all seek comes from within. It is all about the attitude.
It may take longer to be on equal footing with someone who have graduated from a good school, but attitude matters. This consist of the drive to achieve more, to never be contented with being mediocre and striving to be better. It comes from the slave driver in you, the one that forces you to hustle, study harder, study wider or even write everyday on Steemit.
This in my opinion is the edge that we should all strive for, which consists of an education and an attitude to achieve excellence tenaciously. As for pineapples, maybe we will move into making a bio-fuel out of it, but until that day comes, education does not guarantee success. To succeed, it takes a great attitude first as well.
This was a really great post! Thank you!
You're welcome
Super interesting post!
I think this is part of why I'm noticing increasing levels of anxiety in my students. They can't just go to school and get good marks. They have to go to school, get good marks, volunteer, play an instrument or a sport, speak another language, and it wouldn't hurt to have an interesting backstory to use for their personal statement to get into university. All of this while balancing a social life that is way more complicated than what I remember, thanks to social media.
Man, when I was a kid it seemed to be a bit easier!
I agree with the attitude being paramount.
Thanks!
I know! I was joining all the other activities to get out of class..haha.. But I think kids are more mature than we give them credit for, they find exam to be a pointless cause when compared to doing something great for the community.
Fantastic post. I love how you related education to pineapples... genius! Double thumbs up! 👍👍
Thank you! I read about pineapples somewhere and was fascinated by its history...It was a great study on supply and demand. Glad that you like it
Great sharing :)
Hello Friend. This post is very good. Quite interesting excellent explanation, I liked it a lot. You have my vote, I hope that soon you can stop by my blog I have some post that you will surely like. Greetings.
I never knew that about pineapples. That's an incredible little tidbit of history. There are so many goods that we take for granted now that were hugely valuable in the early modern period: chocolate/ cacao, coffee, sugar cane, pepper... I might need to take your post as inspiration and do a research project on this (obviously I'll link back to you if I do that).
Thanks, no problem at all. I stumbled upon pineapple while reading up on supply and demand. Coffee is another interesting one, especially with how it lost its value but gained it once again after many companies gave the coffee beans 'a story'. Starbucks does it particularly well
The comparison of education to pineapple was astounding. Actually, it has been in my mind for a while to wonder with so many degree holders and soon master holders, would it slowly become as common as high school ceriticates like before? As for myself with a bachelor degree, I don't see how better I am thaN those without one, such as my husband. I see the way he takes risks in different fields that he explores into, that's way crazier than me who isn't using my degree anyway. You have said it, it would be attitude that will set apart those for success besides the level of education. Thank you!
I think its specific to the field. For education, it is recommended that we get a PhD in Malaysia or at least a masters. However, for accountancy, its not as relevant. Then again, I agree with how your husband sees it, its good to explore different fields and venture out, after all being knowledgeable doesn't mean that you are wise and even though I am studying my PhD, I still seek advice from people without PhDs or even a degree but are in my opinion, full of wisdom
👍👍👍yeah I guess wisdom comes in all levels then, more like in one's personhood. Hehe thanks for the reply and all the best in your PhD pursuit!!!
Yes. Mass production is not the way to success in anything except maybe bacteria. I liked reading your pineapple post and through about the future of education.
Thank you.. haha.. that's inspirational, maybe I can use that someday on education and bacteria.
Some day. I have a Biology teaching certificate but teach English.
This is really educating and the message was really passed well. I just learnt something cool today @alvinauh
Thanks, glad that you found this helpful!
Teacher! Notice me senpai! Haha, I like how u tie back pineapple to the education system. Lol
Notice me senpai sounds so familiar.. haha.. thanks for visiting lord zord!
Anda masih beruntung menulis di #steemiteducation. Selamat.
You have touched on some key points that are of great concern for this current generation, @alvinauh! Higher education has become an industry that is all too willing to take an incredible amount of money from the students and parents, and give the appearance of an education.
You raise the question that everyone should ask themselves before taking on a huge debt to gain what is marketed as an essential for success in life: What exactly is education, and is attendance at an institution the best place to obtain it?
Outside-the-box thinking is needed to truly set oneself apart from the competition.
I've upvoted and resteemed this article as one of my daily post promotions for the @mitneb Curation Trail Project. It will be featured in the @mitneb Curation Trail Project Daily Report for 22 FEB 2018.
Cheers!
Thank you appreciate it! its true though, I have visited many education fairs and when you really question them about the value that their course is selling, they can't answer. Often they market the location, the POTENTIAL future you may have but they forget that education is about mentoring and guiding, which many fail to do so
