RE: 💌 Steemit Comment Challenge #18 - $15SBD Giveaway - Comment like a Champ, Grow your blog like a Champ!! 💌

in #steemitcommentchallenge7 years ago (edited)

This is a great challenge! It’s the perfect post for a response, too. (Warning: lengthy comment ahead.)

As a fellow newbie, I share her frustrations. I consider myself a skilled writer, but that’s because I’ve put the work in. I’ve been writing just about every day since I’ve been capable of expressing complex thoughts on paper. I used to be a history PhD student and I worked my butt off trying to produce work that was up to academic peer review standards. I can’t paint, or draw, or even sign my name very well, but I can certainly tell a story. As a former teacher, it doesn’t bother me when people don’t have a particularly strong grasp of grammar or an eloquent writing style (particularly if they’re not native speakers); I just care about effort. But there is a lot of garbage on here that goes well rewarded, and that can be frustrating.

This part resonates with me: You sculpt the questions to text by performing research, this by doing your due diligence, getting the facts straight. My niche is writing history articles that are well-researched but fun to read. It takes time—lots of it. Some articles take up to 20 hours of research. I’m trying not to focus too much on the dollar amount. In academia, I spent eight years on and off working on a project that went through three rounds of peer review, and I actually had to pay for offprints of the journal that it was published in. I lived on less than $30,000 a year in New York working as a teacher at a university. I didn’t pursue that career path to get rich, but I loved the work. Since I’ve left academia, this is how I stay connected to those years of my life.

I have every intention of continuing to put in the hard work. I’ve started mixing some other genres in there that don’t take insane amounts of research so I can build a following of people with diverse interests, but I want to keep sharing the projects that I love, even if I only get pennies and a couple of comments in return. Just one reader enjoying what I put out there is enough for me. I truly believe that the hard work will go recognized with time, because the people who have stumbled on my blog seem to enjoy it.

This has been my approach, though I’m not sure if it’s much of a “dirty little secret:” I’ve been focusing my efforts not only on putting out quality content, but also reading through the #introduceyourself posts and contributing thoughtful comments. As a result, most of my followers are newbies themselves, so I’m not making a huge dollar return, but I believe that those are the writers who will eventually succeed if they stick with it, and we’ll grow together. That’s what I love so much about the #newbieresteemday project—it’s based on that exact principle. @beeyou in particular has been such a great mentor, and I’m lucky that she found my #introduceyourself post. I look forward to having the clout to be a real contributor to the project.

Here are some newbie hidden gems I’ve found since I started:

  • @monicacope - She’s a doctor who is also an incredible artist and writer. Seriously, do yourself a favor and look at her blog. Like, right now.
  • @eleanorgoldfield - writes about politics and activism—really interesting stuff.
  • @danbab7 - Interesting art history posts—recently expressed some similar frustrations on Reddit, which is how I found him.
  • @gvgktang - I seriously cannot recommend her work highly enough, but maybe I’m biased because she’s another history grad student. She donates her SBD proceeds to the Philadelphia History Initiative.

what an incredible post Mallory! I am amazed by your writing skills :) ... You asked me the other day what you can do for us, after this I think the question I should now ask is what can't you do? Omgoodness, this is beautiful!!!

You definitely get a newbie nickle for it... My vote for best post... and I encourage you to copy and paste it in your blog and spread this message. You can also mention the wonderful game by @danilesaori and tell you friends to come play it too.

This is exactly how we succeed here on steemit, its by communicating and learning about each other and realizing that we are stronger if we work together!!!

Awesome and let me know what you want to do and you are in! You can be Chairman of the Board if you want ;)

Wow, I feel so honored! Seriously, I can't thank you enough. I know @beeyou is already killing it with the summary posts, but maybe I could contribute by doing another #newbieresteemday regular blog? I could do my own sort of newbie-of-the-week column where I review a few of their posts in the style of a book review, and ask readers to nominate someone for the next week. Or maybe we can do a competition in which we ask everyone to comment with a link to their favorite thing they've ever posted on here, even if it's very old, and if readers want to upvote they can pick something that is still within the 7 day window.

I'll repost this in my blog as you suggested and link back to this post. I'm also going to give my newbie hidden gems a heads up to post in here and get involved. Thank you so much, again!

Great job @malloryblythe. You’re already making friends, I see 🙂. See, no set rules. We all have different talents and want you to do what you love most. A newbie of the week/book review sounds great. We have so many newbies now using our hashtag #newbieresteemday that even @amariespeak’s Minnows Monday’s and @wanderlass’s Minnows Friday might not be able to get to them all.

As far as the competition, you’re welcome to try that too. @deliberator has a best post contest that he does weekly too. He did a similar best ever link contest a week back but of course you can do that too. A lot of our contest newbie hosts give away half of the SBD earned on the post as the prize. Try any route. Just have fun with it.

P.S, make sure to check out the #newbiegames tag. We have a steembasicincome and various other contests there too. Go enter and have fun.

Glad to have you onboard!

Oh yeah I saw #steembasicincome. When I get my next payout I'm going to join it. :) I'll also check out #newbiegames tomorrow. I'll have to go through and read everyone's columns and see what they're doing so I know where I might be able to put my own spin on it. Thanks for all of your help!

We have the steembasicincome contest going right now. Winner is randomly selected for a steembasicincome membership.

I just went to your post and you did it perfectly!! Great job :)

And I love your suggestion and I know @beeyou would welcome another update column... It makes it easier for both of you and better for the whole community if we have more communitcations and spotlights... So you are welcome to take charge and use your own creativity and make sure to let me know when it comes out.... I don't want to miss it, so "hunt me down"... ok?

As far as the contest, you are free to do that too... the more ideas and creative, the better it is for all.. We all realize that our community is strong if we each continue to learn and grow and I know that everyone will welcome your work with open arms!!! (it will be how your cat feels) ;)

Don't forget to let me know when you have published it, I'm excited to see what you produce!!!

Have a terrific day Mallory!!! And thank you very much :)

yessss we've roped in another amazing member! great job @beeyou and @davemccoy I've been to her blog and she is killing it with the content! 👏👏👏😀

Yes, she put in tons of time writing. I told her to hold off on some of the intense research topics until she can build an audience. Right now to engage and meet others which she just did! 🙂

Yes @malloryblythe, definitely a great comment and extremely worthy blog post.

As a former teacher, it doesn’t bother me when people don’t have a particularly strong grasp of grammar or an eloquent writing style (particularly if they’re not native speakers); I just care about effort. But there is a lot of garbage on here that goes well rewarded, and that can be frustrating.<

Also a former teacher, but of preschoolers most of whom have isiZulu or isiXhosa as their first language, so their having to learn in English requires major effort on their part, which I really appreciated. Then again, having a secondary career as a proofreader/editor, the grammar on Steemit can drive me dilly :).

As for your recommended gems, I've just had a look at @eleanorgoldfield - in particular her #introduceyourself post ... very interesting and she has some heavyweights supporting her - I hope she goes from strength to strength. I also looked at @monicacope - yes definitely incredible. It's great that you've recommended such talent in your comment.

Confirmed!
Excellent comment! Was about to say that you can easily make this into a great post, and I realized you have just done that. :)

Making quality comments is a great way to grow and to build followers. A rewarding tactic can be to focus some of your time to comment on higher rep accounts. It will definitely be more challenging to build a connection, but it will increase the chances of some big upvotes, which in the end can be very rewarding for the overall Steemit experience.

I suppose I can do that. It just rubs me the wrong way when people are obviously trying to grovel for upvotes and attention from people with a lot of Steem Power. If it were me I would find that really annoying. I end up spending my time on newbie posts because I want to be encouraging, but I'll try chiming in on conversations on bigger posts from time to time. Thank you for the advice!

Congratulations and thanks for your awesome comment!!

Thank you! Now I can officially break past the 15 SP newbie delegation wall :)
