Mooncake Mania

in #steemitbloggers6 years ago

With the actual day for Mid Autumn Festival coming right up pretty soon, it only seemed fair to write a post on it. This is to honor the years of history that came with it.

To welcome the Mid Autumn Festival, pastry chefs from all across Asia are giving the traditional mooncake a modern twist.

Mooncakes have been around for all most 3,000 years, and still remain the staple of the Mid Autumn Festival celebrations in the Chinese lunar calendar. Ever since I could remember, many legends around the origins of the mooncakes have been shared. However, no one ever knew which was true.

One thing for sure is that this circular, full shape sweet treat is seen as a symbol of prosperity, unity and the reunion of families. Traditionally featuring a filling of red bean or lotus paste, the mooncakes has seen an introduction of creative flavours over the last decade. These are some of the best contemporary takes on this classic dessert.

Ice-cream Mooncakes

Malaysian artisanal ice. Team joint, Inside Scoop, has been making ice cream 🍦 mooncakes over the last few years. Wrapped in flour-dusted, delicate snow skin, the Over the Moon 2018 edition includes handcrafted Mint Chocolate Chip with Oreo Crunch, Unicorn with Raspberry Yolk and it’s best seller – Durian with Chocolate Ganache Yolk. This is one cool treat that really does sell like the hot cakes!

My thoughts : Durian mooncake is a no no for me. Anyhow, I’m no durian lover so maybe I’m not the best judge for it. But, the other two are definitely delicious.

Cheese Cake Mooncakes

Singapore’s Cat & the Fiddle triggered a mooncake craze last year with their take on the traditional delicacy. The cheesecake connoisseurs came up with at least five different flavours that included Cookies and Cream, Strawberry, Blueberry and Chocolate – all infused with cream cheese and lotus paste, encased in a soft snow skin wrap. The highlight was once again a Durian Flavoured creation. King of the Moon featured divine Mao San Wang Durian pulp, enveloped beautifully in velvety charcoal snowskin.

*My thoughts : Isn’t there any other flavours ? Why is everyone making Durian flavours ! My recommendation is the Blueberry & Cookies and Cream flavour. *

If you haven’t tried any of the above no worries, there’s so many varieties available at all the shopping stores, at least in this part of the world. Even before the beginning of the Chinese Ghost Festival, many were already selling mooncakes for giveaways to family members & close friends.

No, if you're enjoying the mooncake, be sure to serve hot Chinese Tea with it and have chinese lanterns all around the garden. That's the true way of enjoying the Mid Autumn Festival

I had plenty of mooncakes while I was in Penang, Malaysia, but they were all traditional ones. You really make me want to find some with a modern twist – they look awesome!

It's true nowadays there are a lot of new flavors to cater to the changing palettes of the masses, especially the younger generation. If you're adventurous, try the new flavor from Casa Hana, they have a new nasi lemak flavor which is quite nice in my opinion. It has a good kick too!

Nasi Lemak moon cake ? Very soon everything we eat has got Nasi Lemak flavour 😊

oh howdy back ireenchew! my my..what flavors are they? I've been fascinated ever since I found out about them because when I first heard that they were made of beans I thought how in the world can a cake be made of beans?? lol.

but they've had so many centuries of making them that I guess they perfected it! I would do alot for a cream cheese one!

I've got pandan, lotus & chocolate. You've got try it the new flavours.. It's totally fabulous..
