Revenge Flagging: A waste of your time and mine

in #steemitabuse8 years ago

If you've been caught plagiarizing, posting copy/paste articles, impersonation, or other bad behavior it is time to man up. Either apologize and try to repair your reputation, or give up. If you are an imposter you might as well powerdown and taken your ill gotten gains and run.

Revenge flagging has little point beyond annoying those taking the time to manually verify content. This isn't something that they get paid for. They do it for their own reasons. Someone who believes in what they are doing will salvage their reputation, who will salvage yours?

From those upvoting this content I read variations of "I don't care where the content comes from" to "That's censorship, we should be able to post anything!" If you don't understand that it's morally wrong for someone to make money off of someone else's work, then look at from the self interest point of view. These actions will devalue Steem if left unchecked. Honest contributions, commenting and participation will earn you more rewards than being part of the problem in the long run.

END RANT- Keep flagging

Bad Reputation? How to Appeal After a Whale Flagging

Sort:

I have received some flagging of my comments when accusing users that tried to cheat everyone with fake #introduceyourself posts, even before flagging their posts... the obvious response to such thing is just to flag the post as this is pretty much their confession of trying to cheat.

I've also tried to reveal some posts that were plain copy/paste or a bit more sophisticated try to cheat with someone else's content pretending it is yours. Again with a warning and not resorting to flagging first, but people usually do not leave you choice.

It seems that this is kind of automated response for these people, acting without thinking first and then they just get what they deserve… the downvote (flagging) of such posts and comments is just the way to go if you care about the community you are a part of and that goes not only for steemit.

If someone is new, I'll leave a comment. If someone has a good history and posts one or two copy/paste I'll take the time to comment and give them tips on what is considered curation. i.e. Smaller photo & quotes from the original source with original commentary. Those are the ones that really hurt themselves by revenge flagging if they want to be part of the community. It also feels pretty good when someone says "Thank you."

I agree, everyone who cares about the community should be part of the solution. I'm just amazed by how many comments I read that advocate an "anything goes" attitude, especially when the comments come from those not earning much in the way of SP.

Evidently asking someone who claims to be a public person, even when they post links to their blogs and social media accounts, to post a link back to Steemit is an invasion of privacy. lol

Thanks for your comments. I feel a bit more appreciated this morning.

Also anyone "revenge flagging" will be severely out flagged by whales/users, so it's not a very smart move.

Nope, it will only hurt them if they want to repair their rep.

Am I allowed to post content that is mine? Several of my posts have been flagged but I've written it all myself.

Yes you can. Since you posted your photo anyone should be able to do a search and see it's your content.

If you don't want to see the cheetah comment at the bottom you can visit steemit.chat channel steemitabuse-classic and ask cheetah to whitelist you. Might have to check back at different times to find him in. Just ask for cheetah.

You probably weren't flagged for posting your external content. The person that did that isn't always... nice.

I've followed you and will enjoy reading. Welcome!

I'm with you and this sort of thing is a pet peeve of mine. I've seen a lot of people get downvoted to oblivion on imgur for posting an innocent comment. A lot of reputation systems are really nothing more than an agree/disagree system that gets unjustly attributed as a rep system. I hope the rep system here is truly fair.
