At the beginning of February 1887 a text signed by a large artist circulated in Paris, in the form of an open letter to Monsieur Alphand, director of the works of the city of Paris. The text said things like this: "We, writers, painters, sculptors, architects, passionate lovers of beauty of Paris, until now intact, we protest with all our strength, with all our indignation, in the name of French taste ignored, in name of the art and history of France threatened, against the erection, in the heart of our capital, of the useless and monstrous Eiffel Tower, which the malignity publishes, often imbued with wisdom and a spirit of justice, has already been baptized with the name of Tower of Babel ..
In 1889, coinciding with the centenary of the Tower of the Bastille, an exhibition was held in Paris, within the type of international anthhocentist exhibitions. It was organized in the Field of Mars and included a palace, a gallery of machines and the 300m tower built by Eiffel. The gallery and the tower were the most important works carried out until then in iron; the gallery is not preserved, but the tower is still the testimony of the research and the advances in this type of construction.
