I worked online for a couple years and my experience was of a slow start, hard work, a lot of work, eventually evolving into better pay, less work, more enjoyable work, to something that could be done for a living. This took maybe a year from scraping small pay jobs to getting ones that were actually worthwhile. I started on Elance :)
