I joined a year ago, but basically have the same feelings. Back then there wasn't the minnowsupport there is now, so is was much harder in general, but now there is so much energy and activity on the platform, that it is very tempting to just throw some easy stuff together, but that's also not my style. To be fair, I think even that can be a skill, so not to be disparaged, and it is the fastest way to get money and a good following, but it's not who I am. So slow and steady is the path for me on steemit, it seems. I'm glad to have found you, as I'm excited about your poetry contests. See you around!
