"Google" is NOT a valid "source" for photos!

in #steemit6 years ago (edited)

Citing "image from Google" is NOT a valid way to source images used on Steemit!

Google's "search engine" is just that — a tool for searching for things on the Internet, but it is not an authority to extend usage rights to images which it has found. Google is akin to a library, of sorts, a mere collection of other people's work.

In the same way, citing that "the information in this post came from some book I found at the library" is not a valid citation, either. It is necessary to give the title of the book and the author of that book, at the very least.

Determining which images are safe to use is not difficult. While in Google Images search, click on "Tools" and then "Labeled for Reuse" as shown in the screenshot below. A little menu will appear, where "Not Filtered by License" is checked, by default. Check one of the OTHER options, instead, to show only images which are okay to be reused.

Next, click on the image you wish to use and it will appear in a black box along with the size of the image and the name of the website from which it was found. Click on the "VISIT" button, as shown to go to the website where the image is stored. This will allow you to check for ways in which the image is allowed to be used, whom to credit for the image, and to download the image at a higher resolution than is available on Google.

For more information, see Google's page on "Find Free-to-Use Images" here:

There are several better sites than Google for finding images which are FREE to use on Steemit posts. Those include:

LifeOfPix.com
Pexels.com
Pixabay.com
Unsplash.com

There are also free images under the "Free Photos" menu tab on:
Dreamstime.com

Even using images from sites such as these, though, it is a good idea to cite that the image is "free-for-use from Pixabay," or perhaps even give credit to the photographer (even though the site may say no such credit is necessary). Stating that the image is free-to-use will keep your record on Steemit spotless.

I would never want anyone to suspect that I have stolen a photo. I would also not want someone stealing my hard work and not giving credit to me. Don't let either of these things happen to you!

One really has to be careful when using other peoples photography, I prefer to only use my own, being told by a well known blogger who taught blogging, way back when I started online.

Every photograph is not free, safest to always check and see, great article @thekittygirl

Sorry, the flag was a slip of the fingers. I have removed it.

If we don't make mistakes, we are not human.

No problem @bengy have an awesome week.

Excellent information about Google, @thekittygirl. Not only will proper attribution keep you legal, it shows others that you are careful in researching the content you share.

Hi this is bot belongs to @sapphic

You are obviously on her author upvote whitelist, (which means you are pretty special), or your post passed the threshold of her algorithm.

Either way she will be along shortly to read your post, ponder it and leave a lovely comment.

Congratz, your post has been resteemed and, who knows, will maybe appear in the next edition of the #dailyspotlights (Click on my face if you want to know more about me...)
Check the rules of the Daily Spotlights if you want to nominate someone!

You are so right. If Not my own photo I only use pixabay

It sucks that stuff like this needs to be explained - that having been said for those that need to know you've done a good job breaking it down. This is why I only use my own material. Gained a follower. All the best.

Great post! Some might honestly not understand and this will pay explains it very well. Thank you for sharing ☺️

Thank you very much @thekittygirl for this. I had no idea that you could filter through the google image results like this. I personally use pexels or my own photos but sometimes I can't find what I'm looking for and this will come in very handy when I need to use it.

Thank you for this awesome post kittygirl and a lot of folks and even me are guilty at times of being lazy.

I usually use unsplash and still attribute it to the artist.

Thanks for sharing this to many sadly thing if they do a basic google search anything is free to use

Thanks for raising the awareness about citing the proper source! I guess a lot of people dunno about this.

#steemitbloggers

You are right. Thanks for taking your time to explain this in details.
Well done!

#steemitbloggers

Thanks for letting me know about this! I've been doing it all wrong!

I always do use pexels.com
Didn’t know the other sites, so now I do have a fallback scenario.
Thanks

This cannot be over-stated. @everyone (lol) should assume that any content they find on the internet is copyrighted unless they have verified otherwise. Google images, in particular, literally say right underneath them that they may be subject to copyright.

Arrow Source

It is not hard (for @steemcleaners, for example) to do a reverse image search to find an image's source and verify the copyright policy of its creator. Usually this can be found on a site's "about" or "terms of use" page.

Yes! Thank you! I've written a few posts on copyright but they often fall on deaf ears.. especially here on steemit. Some people seem to think decentralisation means they can get away with doing illegal things here.. when in reality posting to the block chain makes a permanent record of what you do and say here..

Anyway, very helpful post on properly sourcing images, thanks for writing this up.

Important point! I hope people get this.

This is really informative and an eye opener. Thank you @thekittygirl

Definitely getting the upvote and resteem from me!

why the fuck do we have to tell this to adults?

Hi @thekittygirl, I just stopped back to let you know your post was one of my favourite reads and I included it in my Fiber Ramble. You can read what I wrote about your post here.

Good info. I’m always a little surprised to see a lot of peopmle still aren’t aware of this. Thanks for bringing it under attention again

Wait, you mean I can't just say I found it on Google? 😉😂

This post was shared in the Curation Collective Discord community for curators, and upvoted and resteemed by the @c-squared community account after manual review.

I usually right click copy the link address, and that's it. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

OMGSH, WHY DO PEOPLE THINK THIS IS OKAY! Common sense that needs to be more common knowledge. Thank you for writing this and sharing during the show!

So many people do this, if its a picture i always say who it was. Even if it is by me I say pictures taken with my cell phone. Very helpful for noobies on steemit! Upvoted :)

Good going madame on this.

We would all be bummed out if our own material would be used by somebody all of a sudden. So why do that to somebody (apart from the fact that it is just illegal)

Good awareness!

Simple and useful advice. I think there's still way too much abuse of art on steemit!

Heh, when I first started on Steemit it was the first time I'd written anything online. It took me a while to realise that Google search wasn't a valid image source (even though I referenced the websites). I did learn though!

Very great post indeed, I know of pixabay. Will have to check out the other ones!
