Engage
One of the most useful tools to engage at steemit (besides commenting) is following people.
That way you can make sure that you never miss a new post of you favorite author and also have a good chance to vote early on well established steemit-authors (to get good voting rewards).
Ok, but how to follow steemers?
It's very easy: Just click the triangle right to the authors' name and you have the options to follow, mute or go to the profile page of that steemer.
So you followed your favorite Steem-authors:
But where and how can you track the posts of people you follow?
One of the most useful tools and my daily steemit companion is steemstats.com by @jesta.
After you've entered your steemit username (or any other account) to watch, you will see posts you've voted/flagged on and also posts created by your followed accounts at the 'Recent Activity" tab.
Since the steemstats 0.3.0 update you can also enable desktop notifications. This way you will get a notification every time one of your followed steemers writes a new post and you're able to jump on the train very easy and fast.

How to check who is following you?
There is a very good new service called steem-o-graph by @roelandp, where you can enter your username and see who's already following you. It maybe is a good idea to follow back all of them.

Sorry, that post was two years ago! I don't do that anymore, because it's kind of against the Steemit etiquette to ask for it. People will automatically follow you, when you write interesting posts and engage by commenting.
