And I think that's up to us to create, honestly.
Steemit is still pretty young, overall. And it was developed by (and initially used by) a pretty heavy user base of people REALLY into the crypto currency world. Obviously the have other interests, but by and large their primary topic of interest is crypto. Now they're seeking a branching out, which is great, however its a little unrealistic to think that they're going to be the ones who really turn it away from that subject.
That's where we come in. By creating other content, curating other content, and supporting each other. We won't be able to depend on them for support in that, especially at first and especially with curation votes getting so limited after the hardfork, we're "breaking into" their system with our other subjects... and it will take some time before we swing them around to curating them all heavily. I've gotten 1 unsolicited whale vote on a non crypto topic. But a few dolphin votes... which is nice. It's getting there... and I think patience and tenacity on our part will be what pushes it that way.
true. i don't really pay attention to who's a whale or a dolphin or a minnow...i'm legitimately just looking at things from a content perspective. and while there are plenty of ways i could up my payout game, i'd really just rather read something interesting that i haven't read 1000x before.
The other thing that's sort of critical for it is enticing like minded (or those you enjoy a debate with) people to join. Post articles and get conversations going with those you already converse with... more will join in eventually/inevitably.
We have a lot of friends... more of them should be active here, especially given all of the free discussions Facebook is getting from them. I've moved to 100% only posting links to things I want to talk about on FB... links to me talking about them on here.

hahahahahaha...that's certainly one way to get them over here for sure :P
I think it's really the only way... lol.
"You want to argue with me about something? Fine... here's where you have to go to do it!"
God knows they love to argue with me...
