Ugh, sorry I know I'm super new here and it's always annoying when the noob starts trying to change things. But I noticed as I was going through trending looking for things that interest me to comment on. That there were some complaints that some of the top trending posts are not unique content. In fact some are straight up verbatim rips from Getty and the Associated Press. I did a quick count and found 15 in the top 100 of trending right now, pasting random paragraphs into a google search.
This is a problem, because it's taking rewards away from community created content. There's only a limited pool of funds available and if content is coming through that the author doesn't have a right to, it's taking votes away from real community created content, effectively disenfranchising them. I can imagine this would be discouraging to the rest of the community who are swimming in the steemit sea and getting pushed out of the way by super yachts of professional content that isn't even native.
I'm an aspiring software developer and so when I see things like that, I want to find a software based solution.
Would it be helpful if I were to write a bot that could go through posts as they come in and post a little comment if the article contains content that was found in a google search?
I'm not sure what the thresholds would be, but going through each posting paragraph by paragraph and performing a google search, taking the top 10 google hits and doing a distance search wouldn't be too hard. Adding in a comment like "Hi I'm a bot and I found similar content at ..." , might be enough to at least get those who are curating content to pay attention. We could do this and maybe knowing that there's a guard dog in place would be enough to get people to not game the system like that. Knowing something like that is in place might get some people to come over from other platforms too, since they could be assured of fair play.
Would anyone be interested in seeing something like this? It would only take a few days at most to implement, but I don't want to waste my time if it would just upset people.
hi. looks like we've already have something like this : https://steemit.com/@cheetah ; https://steemit.com/steemit/@cheetah/faq-about-cheetah). https://steemit.com/indonesia/@amriadits/things-that-are-prohibited-in-steemit ; https://steemit.com/steemit/@diego24/steemit-issue-copyright-infringement-bot-might-need-improvement But maybe you'll be able to improve something.
Well that dashes my hopes. But I'm glad to see it's there and by the looks of it she's been here for awhile. I don't think I could improve on that design. Guess some are bound to slip through no matter what the hueristic.
Thank you for letting me know. I've upvoted and following you now.
@saragarmee This is brilliant idea, but I think you'll find google's API has usage limits. You would spend a fortune trying to google all of steem as posts come. Sorry but I don't see it working. The site used to have a service similar if I recall correct, but no idea where it went.
Handy if you can make it work.
Thanks, guessing you're someone I know IRL or you wouldn't be calling me Yuna and there's only a dozen people I know IRL who even know what steemit is, so I'm pretty sure I know you. To let you know, I changed my instagram after someone got really creepy with me. Email me for the new one, if you know me, you know the address. Nice to see a familiar though! Upvoted and following!
