and the steemit system isn't storing everything people say and do on a permanent blockchain that anyone can mine for data? seems to me this place must be gathering a fair bit of info too... am i wrong?

Not at all but as far as I know it's done purposefully on FB for that reason. Can't say it won't be done here in the future but can only hope not.
