Whales Need Minnows More Than Minnows Need Whales!

Whales Need Minnows Just As Much, If Not More Than Minnows Need Whales!
(A Minnow's Point Of View)

The main reason for this is that Minnows Are The Bedrock of the Steemit Food Chain Pyramid!

Just like in the real world, it is not the Apex Predator species (we Humans, Grizzlies, Killer Whales etc. or some of the other creatures a few rungs below us) that are the most important members of the food chain. It is the exact opposite. It is the bottom members of the food chain that support and keep the whole pyramid alive! Without Plankton, Algae, Fungi, Earthworms, Krill and, yes, Minnows and the like, NONE of us would be here!

Now to backtrack a bit, this post of mine was originally a comment to a suggestion/idea that @timcliff proposed as a way to reduce spam. His original position was that by setting the minimum payout to 1.00 SBD, or even to 0.25 or 0.10 SBD it would take away much if not all of the incentive for spammers to spam. If you're interested, you can read his post here.

My original response to his ideas was that
I Strongly Vote For No Minimum.

Thankfully, some other Whales, like @justtryme9 and @ats-david, as well as many other Steemians, expressed that they too thought a higher minimum payout was a bad idea, especially for us minnows. As well, it also seems clear that, through all the responses to his post @timcliff himself became convinced that raising the minimum payout was not a good idea. In my personal opinion, I firmly believe that the minimum should be lowered from .02 to .01! Or have none at all!

Change like @timcliff suggested might indeed have an effect on reducing spam. However the main and most important effect it would have is to drive away the majority of the ā€˜foodā€™ source for himself and all the other whales and dolphins on here!

Itā€™s hard enough being a minnow here on Steemit at present. For the majority of us Johnny-come-latelies making any kind of money here on Steemit is a constant uphill grind. For most of us, the majority of our posts and comments see few if any votes and when we do receive them, theyā€™re usually from other minnows without the voting power for their upvotes to be worth much if anything at all. Itā€™s pretty rare that a minnow or newbie has posts or comments that earn over .05 SBD let alone a whole whopping 1SBD! If you take our pennies and crumbs away from us, what point will we have to even be here and spend our precious time creating content and posts that hopefully someone, or, miracle of miracles, a Big Whale will swim along and upvote?

And we all know what happens if Steemit has a large member and participation drop, right? It certainly wonā€™t be much fun, or very profitable, if it's just a handful of big whales and dolphins swimming around circle jerking each other. I mean no offence to anyone by that, I make it colorful just to make a point.

As we all know, Steemit is just in itā€™s BETA phase and the one of the main points and purposes for most of us here (at least I hope thatā€™s the case) is to help Steemit grow, Massively Grow, itā€™s user base to the point where thereā€™s Millions or even Billions of people using, enjoying and profiting from creating content on Steemit. If that happens, Whoo-Hoo! We all win! But if all of us new and hardworking minnows no longer have any incentive to be here - Poof! The party ends and it all goes away. For everyone.

Now, I am a newbie and Iā€™m very much still learning my way around here. As well Iā€™m certainly no coder and I donā€™t consider myself to be a crypto-genius by any stretch of the imagination. However because itā€™s a big pet peeve of mine when people complain about an issue without offering any potential solutions to it, Iā€™ll give it a whack and suggest a few things I think might help combat Spam. Iā€™m just spitballing, but here goes:

  • What if a hard maximum was placed on the amount of posts or comments any user can make a day? Like 50? Or 100? Even 200? Certainly no human being needs to or is likely to be able to make more comments a day than that, yes?
  • What if there was a word minimum placed on how many words are necessary for a comment to earn SBD? Like say 5, or 10? Surely every real human being can muster a full sentence at least, yes?
  • While weā€™re at it, is it unreasonable for posts themselves to have a word limit in order to earn SBD?
  • How about bots, or something in the code itself, that can detect if the same account repeats the same words or sentences more than a small minimum amount of times per day and then flag or prevent those comments from being able to earn anything?
  • How about making it worth something to flag? I realize this could be opening a whole can of worms on itā€™s own, but perhaps there could be some kind of system where certain people are voted on by the community to ā€œpoliceā€ posts and comments to be able to catch and stop the spammers? I mean, isnā€™t kind of the whole motto and basis of Steemit to be Proof of Brain?

Anyway, thatā€™s all Iā€™ve got for right now. Iā€™m sure thereā€™s lots of people smarter than me who can come up with much better solutions. One of my main points though is that all you Big Whales out there need to remember that you need to take care of and protect us minnows and small fry, or youā€™re not going to have your cash pool to swim in and enjoy for too much longer. Just like in the real world, if we donā€™t be more aware of, and ensure the health (and Happiness ;~) of the smallest but most populous members of our world, none of us are going to be able to continue to live in and enjoy it.

Wishing all of ya all the best!

Steem on!

It's a very good point. Your title caught my attention. We also have to remember that the whole system looks like a zero-sum game in the sense that it takes a huge investment (cash or time and effort) in order to be a whale. With that being said, it's hard for many people to see how they need minnows. Many whales (not all) seem to feed themselves with their own upvotes. Anyways, it seems to be a lot of fun to have so much voting power. It's only reasonable to limit the number of people who can attain such.

Thank you for your reply, @j-alhomestudio. My apologies for the late response, I'm still finding my way around here. There is truth to you comment that it can take a large investment of time and/or money to become a whale. I feel it's important to remember though that the majority of whales became such simply because of very good luck and/or insight and timing to get in on Steem very early, when Steem was still worth pennies per coin.

As well, I'm not sure how I feel about the idea of limiting how many people can become whales. Because itsn't that just the very wealthist here on Steem thinking that there's enough of them and that they don't want to spread the wealth (that level of it anyway) around so they decide to make it even harder for others to attain the same level as they have? No, I feel it's better to make things more equal for all. Make it easier, not harder for others to attain great success on Steemit as well. At the same time make it not so easy for those with the most wealth to so easily make more for themselves. I mean it's beyond ridiculous and unfair that one whale voting for themselves can make more with one vote that most of us will make here on Steemit in a year! Right?

Thanks for spreading the information around. I know the issue and have made multiple topics on it. I commented on @timcliff post as well. No Minnows = No Steemit. All the steem power on the platform is no good to the whales if there is no-one using the platform.

My suggestion for improving Steemit ...

  • Limit the max up-vote value. This takes some of the power away from whales that they currently have while at the same time making a minnows vote more valuable. There is no way 1 persons vote should be worth more then hundreds or even thousands of other peoples.

  • Limit the time it takes to sign up to steemit to at least 24 - 48 hours. Too many sign up, wait for the approval email and then just move on because it takes too long to get approved or their approval email gets lost among junk mail because they stop looking for it.

Below was my response in the topic you mentioned ....

The problem with implementing such a change is that it lumps everyone together. Punishing the newbie / minnow user who are providing good content to the platform because you want to punish spammers. Good content can't always be defined by it's monetary value. If you are a newbie / minnow then for the most part your good content goes unnoticed aside from some other newbies / minnows commenting and upvoting. You can get a dozen upvotes from newbies that like your post and only have 0.05 in rewards. Why should such a comment have it's rewards removed due to wanting to punish spammers ? The answer is that it shouldn't. Newbies and minnows alike depend on these small payouts to grow our account. It's a momentum occasion when we see one of our comments has reached $1.00 in rewards.

If Steemit goes in this direction, for the most part only Dolphins and Whales ( posters with the most influence on steemit ) will be receiving the bulk of the payments. It's hard enough to succeed on steemit as a newbie / minnow if this is introduced it will only get harder.

Excellent comments & ideas, @rentmoney! I couldn't agree more. It was your blog on No Minimum that made me aware of, inspired by and become involved in these issues in the first place.

I very much like the idea of putting a cap on vote value. It's insane the way it is now. They have literally given themselves the ability to print money. There's many whales on here who with a single vote grant themselves hundreds of dollars, or more. I know you already know this, but some Steemians may not. The idea that one person's vote can be worth so much more than hundreds or thousands of others goes against everything that they say Steemit is supposed to be about.

The main problem with this, or any idea or change that will limit or lessen the amount of money the richest Steemians make is that how likely are they to impliment these changes? How often do CEOs and boardmembers of any business vote to lessen their salaries as opposed to voting themselves constant, massive increases? Of course I want these changes to happen, but I don't think I'll be holding my breath that they will.

The sign up time should for sure be much faster. I believe I read a blog that some witness had created an app that significantly sped up the process. Steeminvite, perhaps? Just checked, yes here is the link for it. I haven't used or checked it out much yet, but it looks interesting and potentially very helpful .

And hey, anything is possible right? Perhaps some of the higher up will have a change of heart, or get tired of counting their money all day and tripping over their gold bars all over the house and will DO THE RIGHT THING and make the fixes and changes to Steemit that will help make it as Awesome for Everyone as the rest of us know it can be. As long as we got people like you out there, and all the other awesome newbies and minnows on here, swinging away in the trenches, I still have hope.

Cheers mate! As always a true pleasure interacting with ya.

Here's my spitball proposal:

Non-self comment upvotes should increase bandwidth, and comment flags should decrease it. Good minnows would be quickly rewarded with more ability to participate, and spam accounts would vanish almost immediately.

I like the idea of non-self upvotes increasing bandwidth.
