I'm sure we have all heard of Parkinson's disease.
There is also a chance many know about Alzheimer's.
You would be forgiven if you have never heard of "Motor Neurone Disease."
Fact is, the symptoms of the three deadly diseases above, all rolled into one is what some patients who have HUNTINGTON's disease suffer.
I doubt many have heard about Huntington's.
The disease is debilitating and many would rather be dead than suffer its symptoms.
Every subsequent day spent on Earth, is worse than the next, until the patient dies.
The disease is genetic.
It also shows a concept called ANTICIPATION.
Meaning, if father started showing symptoms from age 50 years, affected son will start showing symptoms much earlier (say 40 years), whose son will also go down much earlier (say 20 years).
The disease is caused by a STUBBORN gene which produces an abnormal protein.
Scientists have targeted this gene for decades.
And they have finally ARRESTED it!!!!!
A new drug has been able to destroy the DNA (or more specifically RNA) that makes this protein in 46 patients.
This happened in London.
It is being regarded as the biggest breakthrough in Neurology in the last 50 years.
As always, we have to wait a while for data to come streaming in before a cure is pronounced if at all, but the signs are promising.
Blood tests have already shown reduced levels of the abnormal protein in patients who went for this trial.
