RE: WATCH OUT FOR FAKES - 4 WAYS TO TELL

in #steemit7 years ago

Hello @stahlberg. I came across something today and after reading this post of yours, I'm wondering if you can have a look at what I found here:
https://steemit.com/art/@abrockman/fishin-with-ma-or-digital-painting-by-aj-brockman

Have a look at the post and the art, keep an open mind, then have a look at the comment section. I'm just looking for a second opinion.

Wow, that's a dumpster fire... I don't want to weigh in on it, not over there anyway, I feel for the guy, he's handicapped and has found a way to make money online, that's nice... he should be just a bit more straight about his methods, that's all I'd say. Some people - many people - love art work like that, he should keep making it. Just make sure he's paid for the use of those images, just to safeguard himself from future law suits.

My issues had nothing to do with the artist, personally. I simply felt misled by what was presented and how it was displayed. I believe including what they're calling a reference photo would have been a wise decision. I wasn't impressed when I found the photograph and discovered what was being presented as a painting made from scratch was actually an altered photograph. In my opinion, calling the photography I found a simple reference photo after the fact is misleading as well. The "painting" and the photograph are one in the same, from my perspective. The smallest details are still there, but blurred. If I was using that photo as a reference, I don't think I would have included the 'S' swirl in white, dead center on the river, for instance. It would have been water with subtle rapids, but not identical to the photo. I don't think I would have included the tiny splotch of red in the trees, upstream. I doubt I would have traced the leaves on the trees. The large rocks are identical....

he should be just a bit more straight about his methods, that's all I'd say. Some people - many people - love art work like that, he should keep making it.

I agree and I did state in a comment that there is room here for all artists, no matter what they do or how they do things. It's also standard practice on Steemit to provide sources. I can't figure out why he tried to turn it on me, when all he had to do was edit his post, include more information, remove the misleading text, and make an appeal to have the flags removed. I told him the situation can be remedied. The ball is in his court.

I feel bad, but at the same time, all it took was a simple right click to find the original photograph. That took two seconds. I was disappointed. The reaction from a few others was beyond my control. I did my best to stay on point.

Anyway, you have a good day.

ah so your comment started that thread? Sorry didn't notice at first, didn't mean to disparage or disagree with them. There were others commenting in there as well, and I could tell the guy was feeling hurt... so I just didn't want to add to it. :)

I think you're right, BUT I don't think it was lazyness, I think the guy knows what he's doing. I think he does it on purpose, wanting people to think he hand-paints everything, hoping for more recognition and maybe money that way. Which isn't great, and it was actually the inspiration for this post. But I didn't want to call him out publicly in person, for a couple reasons.

  1. there are worse things going on in Steemit right now... let alone the world.
  2. I suspect how hurt the guy could be
  3. I'm a big softie deep down, no matter how tough I try to look :)
So basically yes, I agree with you.
