I agree with you @niallon11. We are trying to make Steemit more popular and also would like Steemit to have a comfortable mobile application.
Only @gmail is supported, you can also send it to our email if you would like beta.email@steemitapp.com
You can use mcmahon.niall@gmail.com in that case. Just the article never specifies that it must be a gmail account in case you get that a few more times.
