PLAGIARISM ALERT - SOMEONE IS STEALING MY WORK/TOOLS

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

SOMEONE IS STEALING MY WORK

Today I came across a post that was advertising something very similar to the tool I created the other week, known as the TIPPER. You can check my tool and my post about it by clicking HERE. I checked it out and looked into the code and quickly recognized my code. This dude has literally copied and pasted my work with a little modification to make it free for now, so he can charge later once his tool becomes popular, his post has made over $22.000 SBD by now. And what's even worse is that he's taking credit for his "hard work" in the comment sections. I did not give anybody, including @yuriks2000 , permission to copy my code/work, especially to do so without giving me credit whatsoever.

WHY DIDN'T I HIDE MY CODE?

His excuse and reply to my comment was that there is nothing on my github page that would suggest that he shouldn't steal my code and use it without giving me credit. I didn't know I should write that on my github page! How about the fact that there is nothing on my github page that says you can simply steal this work and use it without even giving credit to me? Unbelievable. Do you really want to trust your active key with someone like this? I wouldn't trust my active key with someone like him. But it's up to you. People ask me why did you not hide your code? Well that's the whole point of putting my work on github! To show the whole world that I'm not stealing your active key!

REQUEST FOR FLAGGING

I do not have much STEEM POWER but if I did I sure as hell would flag his post HERE. My request is from those who do have enough STEEM POWER to make a difference, to consider flagging him. I will leave a 100% flag on his post and would also appreciate if those have upvoted him would take their vote back and flag him instead. I went to his post and left a comment and replied to almost everyone, telling them about this incident. If you agree with my criticism of @yuriks2000 and want to support me, please consider upvoting and/or resteeming this post. And if you don't, please comment below. Any suggestion and/or feedback is welcome. I look forward to hearing from you all!

Hey there @msg768! I have tried my best to remove flags from the post so that you can get the rewards like we agreed with you. Ausbitbank, luke and
reddust removed theirs flags from the post. I have tried to contact adm and phunk about removing their flags, unfortunately they would not listen. If you want you can give it a shot.

Sorry I can't change their mind either. They probably would have flagged you whether I wrote this post or not and they don't listen to me . They act according to their own conscience. I don't mind losing out on the rewards we agreed on. Peace...

I took it from github https://github.com/msg768/mysteemit and modified UI and backend. There is no sign of copyright on Github page.
According to Github license I am allowed to do that. You can read it here
Number 5. License Grant to Other Users
Any Content you post publicly, including issues, comments, and contributions to other Users' repositories, may be viewed by others. By setting your repositories to be viewed publicly, you agree to allow others to view and "fork" your repositories (this means that others may make their own copies of your Content in repositories they control).

Can to you it is worth sharing remuneration with the author of an original code and to tell it participation in work on a code?

Forking on github does that automatically and everyone will know that this was originally created by me, but he hasn't forked it. He has literally stolen my work without giving credit.

Sorry for that, I forked it so that you receive credit.

No please don't. Because I do not want anyone to fork my work. I will write it in my profile now. And please refer to this comment where you see that github does not enforce any license on repositories. If a repository does not have a license like mine, you have to talk to the owner.

Ok, deleted this fork.
Sorry, but I acted according to their license not comments and now I am getting my other posts flagged, too. Don't you think that it is too much?

I spoke to @austbitbank earliner and he provided a more fair solution. He will remove the flag from post and you receive the full liquid credit for the post I made. I in turn will not use your code on steemtools.club

I agreed with @ausbitbank and he removed his flag. And I did not ask anyone to flag your other posts.

The fact that the Github license allow forking does not mean all sources their are free to copy and use.

Github's response to this question (2013 already):

Pavlo Mykhalov‏ @growtofill 13 Jul 2013

What license terms are applicable to a public @github project if none are specified within the project?

GitHub Support‏
@GitHubHelp

Replying to @growtofill
@growtofill We don’t impose any licenses on repositories. You should ask the owner to apply an open source license if you want to use it.

Thank you very much for your support and this information from github's support team. I appreciate it. Do you have a link to this quote or question/answer?

Sure, here's the twitter link:

Thanks a lot for this! :]

Just because you are allowed to do so doesn't mean people get along with it. Now people will flag your ass to the ground because they are also allowed to do so.

If you believe that you are right you can flag, I am not stopping you. But I copied this code like people copy Jquery and PHP code every day. Do you always credit Jquery on yourwebsite, no. But you sometimes use your website for commercial use, yes.

Those things are under open-source license. You don't need to credit them. My code was not under any license and you should have asked me before you copy it. I also noticed that you have copied unrelated files from my repository which are totally unnecessary for the TIPPER to work. This means that you do not have enough skills to implement something like this on your own. Yet you're taking credit for your "hard work" in the comment section and you're now promising not to use my code but implement your own(yet your app is still using mine). I doubt you can implement your own after looking into how you've copied mine.

Knowing the difference between right and wrong is one of the causes of good mental health. Just because you can do it doesn't mean you should @yuriks2000.

Only a complete idiot would trust either of you guys or anyone else for that matter with their active key. Why the fuck would any sane person give you the ability to withdraw funds from their account.

As far as I'm concerned, you're both scammers for even asking for people active keys.

Your concern is very real on one hand, but hypocritical and immature on the other hand. I have put my code on github, and it is public for all to see, and my tool also runs on github, straight from the repository, the same way steemit.com, esteem and busy.org and pretty much every other trustworthy app that is designed to interact with the blockchain works.

It's not immature at all. It's simply common sense. Would you hand some stranger on the Internet the private keys to your bitcoin wallets? Of course you wouldn't. Handing over your steem active key is no different. As for all those other apps which do the "same", none of them require your active key, just your posting key.

Are you telling me that steemit.com, busy.org and esteem don't ask for your active key to transfer money? How do you transfer money on these apps without your active key? You're not making any sense...

Well, for most people, steemit is how they created their account in the first place. It's their wallet and has all their keys. The apps you listed are created by highly respected and trusted members of this community (but I still wouldn't give them my active key). You are neither of those things.

Also, if you'd tried using busy.org, you'd notice it doesn't even ask you for your active key and you sign in with your posting key through SteemConnect. Chainbb uses you posting key as well and they even provide a warning not to use your active key.

How do you transfer money on those apps? I don't know as I don't use them and don't even know if you can. I do use esteem, but only for notifications as the app is too buggy and slow for me to use for anything else.

Just like I wouldn't give people my bitcoin private keys, I sure as hell ain't giving people my steem active key for the exact same reason.

You're not giving me your active key either. You're putting it in a form that is designed the same way steemit.com, busy.org and esteem are designed. If I wanted to steal your key, I wouldn't be an idiot to put my code on github for everyone to see.

Why not? We know know that most users are not going to check the code on github. I'm not going to waste my time checking that code either to see if what you're saying is true. Besides, what's even the point of this service you've created when I can do the exact same thing using steemit anyway?

Here's are the facts:

  • you've created a service which simply reproduces existing functionality of steemit,
  • you're asking for peoples active keys in order to use this service,
  • you're charging a fee to use this service, and
  • you're basically an unknown entity in the community.

Not throwing around the private keys that control the funds in your wallets in cryptocurrency security 101.

Be careful if you post your work on Github that you don't other to fork or copy because it is an open platform made for developers to share their work and allow others to improve it.

Github's license allows people to copy and states that if you post your work publicly know that it can be forked and copied. Unfortunately, your work @msg768 is publicly available. If you don't want people to copy or modify it, you should hide it from public view or Copyright it or delete it from Github.

Github license can be read here

Nice writing. Steemit needs good writers like you. I appreciate your patience and skill. Thumbs up! Upvoted you

stealing someones code, even if its up where it can be read, is still wrong, and moreso not giving credit where due either..

This post received a 4.3% upvote from @randowhale thanks to @msg768! For more information, click here!

its not good.

Hahaha. Thank you for your information. I hope Useful :)

This is aweful! I would not trust him with an active key! Resteemed!

Friend, thank you for helping me on my blog :) saludos upvote

Remove my vote from him and gave it to you. Although i didn't use his app anyway as i'm weary of giving out my active key. Resteemed too

Thanks brother. I appreciate the support :]

Seems like filthy stuff.

Sadly the community is coming to the point where the whole web isn't good enough to rip off now these kind of people emerge from the depths of steemit.

@msg768 i really admire your work but my sp is close to nothing i hardly doubt it would make a difference if. I flag him though i do support your cause 🚩.

I wish you all the best brother. 🙏

Also may I aks how can i get a cool animation like yours at the end of your post

Thanks for your support! That one is free. You can copy the link and re-use it. I don't know the creator of it but it's free. A couple of people are using it and it's not just me.

Sounds wonderful :) thanks for the info and all the best for your steemit future 😊

Hmmm! This will be addressed.

This is really unbearable. I can understand your inner feelings. BTW, May I know what's this tool "TIPPER" all about? It looks like interesting.

C'mon @yuriks2000. No amount of posturing and justifying is going to work. That was a bad idea. But you can make it right, and you can get another chance. The road you have chosen here leads nowhere. You can make a better choice.

that is not fair .

I have to admit I don't know the first thing about coding! However from a morals point of view, this seems like an awful thing to do to you, regardless of the excuses they use to cover their asses. I don't have any power but I have resteemed for you to help spread the word. I hope you get justice!

Sounds like this is an issue of morality rather than legality. Good luck working out this issue. I can't stand plagiarism.

This is huge.
and from the comment i read i guess this case almost solve, and a whale has given the flag.

now it is a real warning to people on steemit. if you do bad or copy paste or do plagiarism on steemit, you will have a bad day.
thank you for bringing this out. resteeming for a warning.

Thank you!

wow thank you for telling me your work was copied now I'm glad I could not try that page out. it would have been interesting to see if I could help people help themselves by commenting on a post more so those who are more active :)

so crazy that he stole your tool!
glad his post has been hidden due to low ratings :)

Thanks! Yeah well this was kind of inevitable but I have to put my code on github for all to see in order to gain people's trust that I'm not stealing their active key through my app...

that sucks even more that you were trying to be transparent.... and he took advantage and stole your code!

Yeah I don't wanna bash him any more. His post is still flagged and he's apparently removed my code. He hasn't edited his post though yet and from the way he had copied my code, it was kind of obvious that he doesn't have enough skills to make one himself because he had copied unrelated files from my repository! How are my t-shirts by the way? :D

It's good that this is all sorted out amicably. Now we can all continue to receive autotips from the spambot into our wallets directly...only cool thing is that we can collect all those 0.001 SBD tips from hundreds of desperate account users, no wait is that cool..maybe not but, you know free SBD.

I can't get your tipper tool to work. I hit the Tip/Transfer button and got a fail message. Is it down at the moment?

What exactly is the error you get?

I tried it again and a number of payments went through, but then they started failing. I have closed the browser now, as I left it running for over an hour, and was just getting a whole list of error messages to the effect of " payment to @xxxxxx failed, will try again later" Your payment went through OK, but I only got up to the c's in a list of 315 payments. If it was a free service I wouldn't be too concerned, but now if I try to run it again I will have duplicate payments from what I did before.

I wish you hadn't closed the window so we could check the details of the error message in console to see why transactions were failing. My guess is that you have very little STEEM POWER in your account which means you have a very limited bandwidth so you cannot transact too much too quick, so transactions were failing because your bandwidth had exceeded and you needed wait for your bandwidth to recharge just like your voting power. But it's probably a good idea that you closed it because it would most likely take forever due to how much STEEM you have powered up in your account. It's very little and simply not enough to make payments to 300+ people so quickly...

OK, well I lost 0.315 SBD for only a few tips (about 90) sent. I have about 15 Steem Power including delegated Steem so I guess in future I will have to use the tool on less than 24 hours. I will play around with it and try it again with less than 100 tips. Maybe if I set it on 12 hours or less would be optimal.

Yes. Please make sure you have enough bandwidth and if you run out of bandwidth you can leave the window open as it will continue to try and once your bandwidth is recharged, it will transfer them. But for your current SP, it's best to only tip less than 100 people using the tool. I don't do refunds as I warn in the window but I will make an exception for this one and will send you 0.315 - 0.090 = 0.225 SBD back. Peace...

Thanks very much, I do appreciate the refund. Will try another run at some point hopefully with better results.
Edit: just tried it again and got this error message:

Active Followers: 82
Total Fee: 0.164 SBD
Transfering 0.082 SBD To @msg768 Failed.

OMG! This is going bananas!!! Calm down, please. Unfortunately, any type of creation on a social site.... it is risky. I would try to do all that the old fashion way.

Great information, love your shirts too!
