Steemit has been experiencing a radical change in the rewards structure and undoubtedly the top earners are feeling it more than us minnows, but maybe that's the idea. As a new user I was poking around and came across the steemitblog's post about the 2017 growth plan related to the development of a mobile app (I already use @good-karma's app), effortless onboarding (I think I waited about 6 hours and it was pretty effortless), and communities (just had a rant about that one). Honestly, I'm really surprised that no one took note of the language used in that document. If it had been published by any Fortune 200 company I'm sure there would have been some interest in it, but because Steemit is giving us all a fraction of the pie everybody loves them, until you aren't the ones they want to share the pie with because they think you're a fatty.
I wouldn't say the company isn't benevolently altruistic. I really don't know that much about the history of Steem and Steemit and all they have done for so many people. I DO know that the majority of the community of self-censoring whale chasers that comprise Steemit today isn't the target audience Steemit has set it's sights on. They need the poor people. I am poor. I fit that description. However, I'm a poor American! Corporate Steemit wants the Western users to resoundingly know...
(but no one's listening)
From the 2017 Growth Plan
Non-West countries are optimal for growth
- The West, especially the USA, is the most competitive attention economy on the planet.
- Most of the world's attention economy is far less competitive, meaning they have more time and attention to spare to try new apps.
- The less wealthy you are, the greater the relative reward and significance of a Steem reward.
- Many nations with under-tapped attention economies have so much less wealth that even small Steem rewards will have a dramatic impact on their lives.
- Steemians who are significantly impacted by these rewards are far more likely to spread Steemit via word of mouth, which is the ideal referral process.
- Therefore Steemians in poorer countries derive more value, refer more users, and are likely to contribute to the network for less costs than those who are from comparatively wealthier countries.
(Emphasis added)
Somehow, nobody could look at the other side of the "we just want to empower these most desperate people" coin that looks something like "you want too much for your efforts, let's focus on the 3rd world impoverished communities". I am not bashing the sentiment of helping ease the economic disparity worldwide (like I said, I'm poor, dude...), I'm really against the fact that this verbiage wouldn't have been tolerated in another context because it's fairly plain in stating that the need is to lower labor costs. We are the laborers of the Steemit economy, yet all of the jobs will be outsourced to those communities where expectations are effectively nil.
So, where will it lead? To enact the borderless globally viable economic model that Steemit wishes to create means that we will all have to hope for WAAAAAY less success than those early adopters who seemingly have made quite a hefty sum for their forward thinking. Seems like we're late to the Steemit goldrush, but don't worry... I think there's room on the plantation if you don't have anywhere to go.
Good analysis. Everybody thinks that they will make a living off steemit. At the same time the expenditures are calculated and changed at a moments notice. It is being controlled and the majority of the revenue is being put back into the owners of the sites pockets. They can keep you from being seen or blast you all over the sites network.
I agree entirley with that statement and I'm going to give you an invisible penny that was given to me for not expecting too much. You know you're never going to make it here until you get out your Steemit pom-poms, but I admire your newbie courage!
You are sure right about that last line "They can keep you from being seen" because I just paid to promote the post and it doesn't come out in the promoted tab and I've been scrolling awhile... I even had somebody resteem this as a favor and the resteem doesn't show up in any of the tags for this post. SMH
Awesome post @metanoia, upvoted and followed!
I think you are right, if you look were steemit can grow exponentialy is Asia, Latin America and the poorest parts of the globe, but that doesn´t exclude the rest, just think how many indians, venezuelans and pakistanis are writing here in english, it´s a great platform for you to reach your words to them also ;)
Peace, Carlos.
Point is duly noted my good man! I should have taken my own advice and looked at the other side of the coin!
I agree with @carlosdaniel , just because the focus is on the fast growth countries, doesn't mean that there won't be opportunity for those of us in good ol' America. Hopefully, the rising tide lifts all boats and fish and we all benefit from more users being on Steemit.
Granted, those from those other countries will gain quicker followers and such, just by the nature of how people flock to those of their own culture.
I think you may have to check with @carlosdaniel, but I took that mention of reaching 3rd world countries with my words as a bit of a tongue in cheek comment. I base that off of the inclusion of Venezuela. They happen to be literally starving so I don't think their main concern is a random blogger. The point of this post is to highlight the fact that Steemit seems to be purposefully looking to fill it's platform with content at a low price via the work of the poorest peoples on earth. Not a good thing! I don't understand why no one ever reacted to that at the time it was disclosed. Why didn't anyone notice what was going on in that release?
Because nobody likes to read the fine print.
But, seriously, if they could just add a simple translation tool, it might actually work out well for everyone.
I went the extra mile and actually translated an Arabic comment to English on one of my posts with Google tranlate. Then I had to translate my reply, too, but if they could bake that in it would be awesome!
Also, we will all have to admit, that due to issues in Asia, they will adopt crypto currency faster, which is why Steem probably is focusing on them as well.
We would be assuming that is their unstated motive when their published reasoning is that it's more cost effective to the rewards pool if they get content at a low price. I think it's kind of hard to get around that when it's plainly stated in the release.
Well, when people here are trying to get paid $15/hr to take burger orders, having someone who makes $15/week on a good week, write blog posts is a no brainer. Can't blame them for the focus in order to get more content.
idk. We'll see on this one.
I think we should take the Growth Plan at face value. HF19 takes on a different complexion in light of the focus on emerging economies and 3rd world nations. You feel the loss by having your revenue cut 30~40 percent, but someone from their target regions would feel pretty "whale-ish" with the revenue from ONE of your posts...
Hi! I am a robot. I just upvoted you! I found similar content that readers might be interested in:

Hey, cheetah bot... I'm pretty sure I linked to that content. Now scat you bot, you! Go on, get outta here!
I'm new.. I don't really know all the dynamics of how the "money" works .. I just hope that eventually, content that I generate will make someone think, laugh or research. As Steemit grows, maybe they will integrate some type of blockchain voting on concepts and changes as these types of decentralized voting options are starting to spring up -- if not, there will be a "new" platform that does.. We all know how that works -- in life or anything -- change or get left behind.
I agree, a new platform may rise if they neglect the user base.
hello every body haw are you i very happy if i have friend like you plzz all follow me
