Its 9 am here in South Africa, I'm at a coffee shop starting work as a freelancer. Beautiful smell of coffee. Starbucks just arrived in South Africa but this place has way better coffee than Starbucks.

I am curious how much is a cup of Starbucks coffee in rands?

What place is better? Local place?

Dis Vrydag! Yes!

OK, I am seriously impressed.I can't believe you just typed a couple words in Afrikaans. That is so cool and you even know our currency.

Starbucks is cheap if you convert it to dollars I think. Let's see, a grande (medium) caramel frappucino is around 40 rand, which is about 2.70 in USD. Now I have no idea what they cost in the US but I suspect it might be more than that.

One of my friends from Ghana who lives here really likes the Reserve coffees at Starbucsk. They are like literally double the price but supposed to be better beans. The normal beans are really not that good at all. I am a gold rewards member so at least I get a little better quality at the normal price. Usually those beans are R3 more per cup or shot not sure which.

But the Reserve ones... crazy. I told the barista I want a tall cap and whatever my friend usually has - he is there a lot too - and the bill was like R96. But I don't care because he is my friend and gives my great advice always about lots of things. He actuallly imports Shea butter from Ghana to South Africa.

But I prefer this place called Seattle Coffee Company. The coffee is unbelievable and the environment is more conducive to work or study. Quieter. But I still have to use earphones to stop myself from listening in on other people's conversations. It is joined to a bookstore like Barnes and Noble, called Exclusive Books.

Where are you from?

Wow thanks for that info! I am actually South African but I don't live there anymore.

I left the country before Starbucks was introduced to SA. Was just curious to how much it is. Still quite expensive but guess people are crazy for it. I prefer the smaller more personal cafes.

I prefer the smaller cafes with fewer people and less hype. When I live now they are everywhere. You can find some sort cafe almost every 500~1000m lovely place.

Nice to have a fellow South African in the group. That makes 3 of us!

Yes I agree, thanks for the cool info. Where do you live now? Following you

Currently in South Korea, really nice here! Fast internet and extremely low crime rates! Lovely place! I want to follow you but the account and bot is set up with tracking followers, so as soon as you reach 50 Rep you are being followed by @make-a-whale

Thanks for your reply. I have heard great things about South Korea. One of my best friends at college in the USA was from there. Her boyfriend was this black guy (black mom and Swedish dad) who had this sign above the door of his dormitory room that I think said something like " I love Sue" in Korean.

His girlfriend's name was Sue. Well, probably not really "Sue" like that but you know often people from Asia have to change their names a little. Just so we can actually pronounce it if we are from the West and use Roman letters!

Again, thanks so much for your help so far, I really appreciate it. My post today got to 1.99 USD within 44 minutes I was quite surprised, here it is if you wanna check it out. Any feedback would be immensely appreciated: https://steemit.com/mba/@pjcswart/maritime-chronicles-episode-9-a-rather-peculiar-industry-12-minute-read

By the way, congratulations on reaching 50 rep with this account, you are moving up really fast. I think 2 or 3 points within one week. I am noticing other people's reps more now because I want to up mine.

I am on 49.8 right now. I am glad that @make-a-whale is gonna follow me automatically when I reach 50, so I don't have to apply again I assume. Thank you so much!
