With the implementation of Hard Fork 19, a lot of minnows like me have noticed much higher payouts on their posts, and that's awesome! And each upvote is now worth much more than it was. But with these higher payout amounts and upvote amounts, comes a sacrifice. Now the voting power for each upvote decreases much faster than it did, about 4 times as fast in fact, meaning you can upvote way less posts and comments at full power.
Will this make users more stingy with their upvotes?
Voting power recovers about 20% a day, and that also makes it much harder to recover your full voting power back. For example, before Hard Fork 19, I had about 80% upvote power at the lowest. Now, after Hard Fork 19, my voting power hasn't gone above 45%, being 42% at the time of this post.
It has become harder for me to upvote things, because I don't want my voting power to go too low.
Could this help filter lower quality posts?
With upvotes depleting in their power so fast, I believe users will start to allocate their upvotes to only higher quality posts that deserve the upvotes, instead of low quality posts that are upvoted and asking for an upvote in return.
How can minnows change their voting power?
Minnows can actually adjust their voting power through the esteem app. Here's an article by @gmuxx that explains how to do it: https://steemit.com/hf19/@gmuxx/hf19-killing-your-vote-power-try-this
This may end up not having as much of an effect on future posts.
A lot of the posts have decreased a lot in their payout, but that is because it adjusted the payout based on past upvotes, where users were willing to give out their upvotes more freely.
What about whales?
Well, to my knowledge, whale's votes are worth more, but proportionately are now worth less. This could be dangerous, as it reduces the whales incentives to curate content and they do not have as much of a position as they did before the fork. I am not very proficient on how this affects whales, because I am not one, but to my knowledge this Hard Fork did not help them.
Overall, this will help Steemit grow.
With new users joining able to see more immediate benefits to posting, it will incentivize more new users to join and start making money and joining the community. For example, before HF 19, my upvotes didn't change a posts' potential payout, but now my upvotes increase the payouts by 3 cents. With newcomers joining in, the price of Steem will eventually increase, making this fantastic for the future of Steemit.
What do you think?
After a couple days since implementation, what do you think the effect has been/will be?
Thanks to @gmuxx @nnnhhh and @cryptologyx for helping me edit this post!
Make sure to check out the @minnowsupport group!
I've noticed significantly less upvotes now than I have in the past.
Me too! I still try to upvote replies though.
Thanks. I didn't realize the posting frequency affected my steem power until a day or 2 after the update so I'm having to recover my SP now :(. I know in the past I would get ~14 per post on the first few days I opened an account. Now i'm lucky to get 3 or 4.
only thing i feel so far is voting power decrease so fast & I can't upvote much now😡
Exactly
Same here. TOO fast
yeah :)
This post received a 1.5% upvote from @randowhale thanks to @sports-talk! For more information, click here!
Yeah i noticed the payouts increase a few days ago. I have actually turned off steemvoter to recover VP. I will probably be a lil more stingy with my votes.
Yeah me too, my upvotes are only worth 1 cent at this moment because my power is so low.
Weird, was only thinking about this today, i think it might be the case. Great post, cheers man.
For me that sounds like wishful thinking. I guess that people will upvote big accounts in the hope to get some nice upvotes back in return. However the big accounts are thinking the same and will upvote other big accounts, too. In the long term smaller accounts will get less of the cake. That is quite sad as actually to flatten the reward curve was a very good decision (but unfortunately counteracted by the introduction of higher impact votes and faster reduction of voting power).
I am not really optimistic.
If interested just check the newest article in my blog - it deals with that topic.
I saw your article! I think it raises an interesting point. For those higher accounts, they can all upvote each other and dominate those hot and trending pages if they all swap votes, can lead to a topheavy trending page with whale votes at the top and a significant decrease in payouts after those posts.
Thanks for the feedback!
Granted I have only been here a bit over a week, I have noticed an upswing in subpar quality posts...
Think it has to do with HF 19 at all?
Absolutely. That afternoon is when I noticed it. A huge influx of posts with an image and very little writing.
And for some reason that works with a lot of people? Wonder why
No idea! I for one am proud of my quality content, and I am going to stay wht way I am. I am happy being me- in ALL the ways! lol
I will try to continue to write quality content while mixing it with a couple things I just want to share. Like my first draft pick update and antshares news, just little thing I want to post about.
It's now better to use manual voting after HF-19, to control voting power.
Yeah I agree, mine is drained.
I give you some :)
Oh wow!!! Thanks so much!!!
happy to help! thanks for the informative post :)
Thank you!
I'd say people are being more "moderate" with their voting, but I also see the hot and Trending pages moving much faster, which means more people get a chance in the spotlight.
Yup there are definitely upsides!
I think the trending pages are dominated by the same users as always ...
I've only been here for a week so I'm not familiar with all the people who are always there, I'll probably notice soon.
Definitely has made me stingier on days that I spend a lot of time steeming! But I will admit there are still days I don't do the work and toss out a few votes anyway. View count to votes on most posts suggest people are still being pretty generous from what I can see.
Really informative... Maybe I'll start to be more careful of where I put my upvotes now. ;) But you definitely deserve one.
Thanks!
My pleasure, happy to help and thanks for the mention.
I believe most users are now aware of the change in voting power and have dramatically decreased their voting. Maybe this is more of an incentive to improve the quality of your posts but it could also mean struggling minnows will lose faith in the platform and give up before they gain traction.
I guess we will have to see how it pans out.
Yup, now we play the waiting game
