The Top 100 Most Followed Steemit Accounts
Last night I wrote a script analyzing 54,459 accounts to give you the top 100 most followed Steemit users as of Tuesday, August 9th.
TOP 100 USERS BY FOLLOWER COUNT
Steemit Is Not a Popularity Contest
Let's be clear about that right up front. This isn't high school all over again. It's possible to game this report by creating 100's of bot accounts and then following yourself with them. What matters most here is the content you create. Will it always be noticed or appreciated with whales votes? Nope. Should you keep writing great content anyway? Yes, if you want to see this platform succeed long term and, over time, gain followers of your own. For the most part, IMO, these people have a lot of followers because they're consistently posting great content others want to read. Do the same, engage, write something meaningful, build relationships, leave useful comments, and you will make connections as well.
Some interesting things I discovered while putting this together:
- I finally figured out how the API works. You can see the nerdy details of how I got this data here.
- I'm somewhat of a narcissist. I originally planned on showing the top 50, but since I was 53 on the list, I decided to go with 100. That's forgivable, right?
- Out of 54,459 accounts only 18,898 have actually posted at least once. We have a lot of bots/mined accounts around here.
- Only 6,671 accounts have at least one follower.
- I really love geeking out about data like this.

While I'm not on the list, I'm happy to say that two of my referrals are on the list : @lukestokes and @katecloud
I'm very thankful for you and @sean-king who got me interested in this thing early on. Thanks Bill!
Nice post! What will happening, if someone resteem your post?
Do you make money for your referrals?
I'll be on that list soon!
After going through the full list of 100 people my followed number has increased from 38 to 63, so @lukestokes thanks again for this post. It was useful to find some more interesting people to follow here on steemit :)
Excellent! Glad you found some good accounts to follow.
I can't believe I saw I follow over 200 people . Wonder how this happened in just 2 weeks
I'm sure there will soon come time where we are going to be removing accounts from our follow list as well... :)
I already started :)
Thanks for the mentioning and as always `
@dragonho
Thanks for the list, I'll be checking some of these account to seeif I find something interesting.
The stats you got about the users that actually have posted at least once is more interesting though... a bit less tha 19 thousand out of almost 55K registetred. This simply shows how small steemit is at this stage and how much headroom for further growth it actually has :)
Following @dollarvigilante for example is pretty much pointless for me, even thoughhe is at the top of the list... he has yet to post something interesting for me personally, even though judging by his post's rewards, votes and comment you can say he is quite successful on steemit.
His last post was downvoted because he repeated himself . His knowledge has no value to me ! I just mentioned this in my previous post a couple of hours ago
Starting to repeat yourself just after a couple of posts simply eans that there is not much you can actually say. On the other hand it is not bad that he came to steemit as he brought some of his followers along and among them might be some hidden gems that just need time to be revealed...
I agree
It's interesting how big the difference is between the number of accounts and how many have actually posted.
Yeah, most of the accounts on Steemit are bots or mining accounts. When people talk about the platform growing to 50k+ users, that's not really an accurate reflection of active accounts, which you can see here.
Ha ha. I like the "narcissist" confession thrown in there. :-)
Truth in transparency, right? :)
That's quite a list, thanks for the info! It's definitely helpful when considering the different types of data on the site, as you mentioned.
Very interesting. Also shows that people have started using the Follow feature since the Feed has come live - some new users are doing rather well. But I'm sure oldies will start catching up.
Great points and information.
-Some of this info made me say, what? O.o
I was hopping to be on the list, but even a bot like cheetah have more follower than me aha
Cheetah is one of my favorite accounts on this whole platform.
MEOW ! I adore @cheetah
Echo of the past- bots with 0 posts and with 100-200 followers)
And no-bots will take more followers now)
Which accounts on the list are definitely bots which don't also post? I'd like to play with this over time and add other metrics such as reputation score and post count of the actual followers (i.e., don't bother including non-active followers to the count totals).
@wang
Damn... looks like I've got some work to do if I ever plan on cracking the 100 mark. I think Im at 4 followers. Cheers, thanks for the work put in!
You're welcome! I enjoyed putting it together.
Nice work, thank you for your effort.
That's some interesting and surprising results!
Great job mate! You have one follower more now! :)
Thank you! I always appreciate some new followers. :)
And on #200, with 78 followers is ...meeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :)
Great post as always man.
I changed the script to show the top 1000 and you're actually #142, according to the data from last night:
➜ php-steem-tools git:(master) ✗ php follower_stats.php | grep 'razvanelulmarin' | 142 |@razvanelulmarin: | 72 |
haha. thanks, man, it ws a joke :)
Hahah awesome statistics! Im number 79 ;) I love how you decided to do top 100 cos you were 53 :P So what can we do about the bots accounts? Can they be deleted?
I was really hoping I'd be in the top 50. This process has caused me to think about my narcissistic tendencies. :)
Yeah, I'm thinking about that. I included accounts which have at least one post, but I could also try the
mined: true
attribute which is probably a good indication of a bot, but not perfect. I could also improve it to exclude followers who are bots or who have low reputation. Whatever mechanisms I use to message the data could possibly be gamed either way. In the end, the content is what matters, so follow count is just one signal among many.hahahah maybe ;P sounds good, although I was just told they cannot be deleted. lol So reputation will be our best bet and I think this makes sense ;)
I haven't looked into how to calculate the new reputation score yet and it's not a property I see in the API.
Cool, well let me know when you do :)
Didn't realize the top of the chart was just over 1000 and most of the runners up in the hundreds... imagine when this place jumps to Youtube or Facebook audience numbers 0_0
Let's hope it's a "when" and not and "if." :)
Ok , now I know . Do I need to know this ? 😜
It's helpful for those looking to follow others who consistently put out good content... or at the least, follow count is one indicator among many we can use to decide who to follow.
Luke , my comment was a little bit sarcastic but it feels like promotion to name the same same same people . I follow some of them I realized since the new feed tool . So I must have liked their content . I am on my own mission to find people I think are worth to upvote but I appreciate your very valuable information . Don't misunderstand . I just followed you :) finally because I see how hard you work 🙌
Thanks @mammasitta! We really do need a sarcasm font, I think. :) So much of it goes right over people's heads, especially computer geek nerds like me. Thanks so much for the follow! I'm glad t hear you're looking for new authors as well. I hope this list changes dramatically in the weeks to come. Actually, many at the top are brand new to Steemit, which is pretty cool, IMO.
Exciting cyberspace :) I'm loving it all so far
Wow @dollarvigilante got to the top quickly.
I will keep working to someday make this list!
Thanks for the list. I have an idea to fill some space on my blog. A steemit journal. Let me know what you think. https://steemit.com/steemit/@joelinux/8-11-16-2-00am-california-mildly-entertaining-journal-entry-1
Nice! I like the idea of journaling on the blockchain. I think I did one of the very first #journal posts, actually. You can see my third entry here. I don't think I'll journal daily, but I will do it ever so often because I like the idea of having "myself in the past" recorded in the blockchain.
This is great! It's good to know that it's possible to view this data!
Everything is on the blockchain... it's pretty amazing. :)
How did you find this data?
I linked to the script I wrote in the post. You can also find it here: https://steemit.com/steemit/@lukestokes/code-to-analyze-the-top-100-followed-accounts

Thanks for putting this list together.
You're welcome! I have a newer report I put up yesterday, if you're interested in more up-to-date numbers.

I would like to see a current list.

I love stats like this, keep it up!
Out of 54,459 accounts only 18,898 have actually posted at least once.
I would love to read more about this. Bots ?? Automation? Anyone who can point me in the right direction??
