Steemit: Putting the Social Back into Social Media

in #steemit7 years ago

steem moon.png

I think the price of STEEM, the cryptocurrency behind Steemit.com, will go to the moon in the future. In cryptocurrency mythology, "mooning" has no relation to dropping trow and everything to do with a skyrocketing price. On January 1st, 2013, the price of bitcoin was just above $13. The price today, just four and a half years later, is closer to $1,300. That's a nice trip to the moon for those who invested early.

I'm not claiming STEEM is the next bitcoin in terms of increasing value, but I do think there's a trip to the moon in our future. There's a lot of value in this platform and very few understand it. Even fewer have taken advantage of it. I'm long-term invested in STEEM for the following reasons:

  1. Decentralized, cryptographically secure, trust-less networks operating at scale will power the future.

If you're not a geek like me and don't have a clue what I just said, read it this way: This stuff is the future, yo. Steemit is built using a very advanced blockchain database technology called Graphene 2.0 which can scale incredibly well. If you're not sure what a blockchain is, this 17 minute video will really help. If you're not sure why blockchains matter, watch this lecture by Vinay Gupta.

  2. Profit-taking social media platforms which don't share value directly with those who create it will have trouble competing with platforms that do.

The content you create online is what generates millions of dollars in value for social media platforms. They rely on selling your data to advertisers to show you ads which often annoy you and invade your privacy as their cookies track everything you do online whenever you see a share button. You are the product. Steemit has no advertisements. As the site becomes more popular and more people purchase influence via Steem Power (vested STEEM which influences reward distribution through voting), everyone who holds STEEM and Steem Power will gain value as their holdings go up. In a way, you become a share-holder and co-owner of Steemit.com's future.

  3. Online censorship will increase as governments around the world continue to lose control of the narrative their citizens consume.

Blockchain technology fuses the concept of a database and a network so everyone can access information while knowing that information hasn't been tampered with. Data is verified and shared across computers around the world making it censorship-proof, short of shutting down the Internet itself.

  4. Steemit is a true social media platform, not just a place to connect with people you already know.

Other platforms do a great job of keeping you connected with people you know or have met in real life. Steemit is one of the few (and maybe the first?) social media platforms which rewards personal expression and empowers individuals to build new, meaningful relationships based on shared ideals. It's no longer just about who you were born with or who you've met around town. Your relationships can be global based on your deepest passions and favorite topics.

  5. Steemd, the code behind STEEM and Steemit, is open source.

If Steemit.com Incorporated ever does something the community rejects, we can now legally fork the code and start off on our own path. This, to me, ensures the motivations of Steemit.com and the STEEM community will stay in alignment which benefits everyone involved in the ecosystem.

  6. This is just the beginning.

As of this writing, Steemit is just barely over one year old and yet is already ranked the 7,968 most popular site in the U.S. and 16,239 globally. As we continue to create valuable content here, more people will link to it and share it elsewhere and these rankings will improve. Yes, the network effect is much stronger with sites like Reddit and Facebook, but we also know how quickly any site can become a MySpace story. The points mentioned above could continue shifting the tide, though it may take 5 or more years for a significant transition.

If I had to guess, there might be some reasons why you haven't yet created a Steemit account or if you have one, why you don't use it much.

  1. You don't spend much time on social media.

Fair enough. But consider this: Within a few decades, it's quite possible your online and offline life will become mostly seamless. I highly recommend getting a head start on creating and protecting your online identity.

  2. You're not much of a writer.

You're not much of anything until you practice it. Writing is like any other skill. The more you observe it and the more you do it, the easier it becomes and the better at it you will be. Expressing yourself effectively through language is an important part of your conscious life. Don't sell yourself short.

  3. Social media is only useful to you for keeping in touch with people you know in real life.

That's a fair argument. Are the people you know the best possible people you could ever know for a fully engaged and fulfilling life? Is it possible expanding beyond who you've built relationships with via location or birth could lead to even more valuable relationships for you and others?

  4. You don't understand cryptocurrency.

This may be on of the most important reasons for you to get familiar with Steemit. The future economy will be influenced less by government fiat (money created out of nothing) and more by producers of real value and beneficial innovation. When you control your own stores of value, you aren't subject to inflation and loss of buying power happening all around you. Steem is one of the easiest cryptocurrencies to use today. You can, for free, within three seconds, send any amount of STEEM or SBD (tokens pegged at a $1 USD value) to any other Steemit user with a few clicks. All you need to know is their user name. You can also buy and sell your SBD/STEEM for bitcoin or Ethereum or any other currency on many different online exchanges. In the future, you'll be able to buy more and more things directly with your cryptocurrency. Steemit is your onramp to the future economy.

  5. You just don't have the time to look into it and figure things out.

This, I think, is your lizard brain talking. It's the primitive, system 1 thinking which is fueled by base emotions like fear, worry, and uncertainty. You have the same 24 hours a day as everyone else. It's okay to be new to something while understanding very little. That's how you grow your mind and stay young in spirit. The Steemit community, including myself, will help onboard you and answer any questions you have. You got this. You can do it.

Why not sign up today and start posting? What do you have to lose?

Please feel free to resteem, tweet, and share this post with your friends as to why you think they should join Steemit. Let's help shape the future.

Well put

There is definitely potential in Steem, the technology is sound and through nothing short of a small miracle we have almost no viable competition. On balance Steem has good long term prospects

They seem to be making slow and steady improvements as well. I'm really excited about this. :)

Well laid out write up Luke! We are onto something that the world doesn't even notice yet. I sure am excited for the future.

Thanks Randy! I'm proud of this post. I think it may be one of my best arguments for why this place has so much potential.

Great article which names many positive aspects of steemit!
I did resteem it, but also will forward it to as many as possible friends, colleagues and acquaintances who still don't use steemit.

Excellent! That was my goal in creating this post. Something many people would share far and wide to help bring in new users.

В том то все и дело....пользователи тебя и кормят....обычная пирамида...с новыми примочками....рубанут тебя на энергию и что будешь делать?....

In fact, that's the whole point .... users and you are fed .... an ordinary pyramid ... with new lotions .... rubanha you for energy and what will you do? ....

Sorry, I'm having trouble understanding this Google translate. Lotion? Huh?

It will price @ $3 before the 2017 ends.

That's a fun prediction. Let's see how it plays out.

Great piece. Shared on twitter. Stephen

Every share counts! Thank you.

lukestokes What got my attention about steemit was that it does something where most crypto do nothing . The more I Am on steemit I have noticed how great the site works overall . Yes I feel like steemit has a bright future down the road .

Some aren't fans of app tokens, but to me, if it has a superior crypto technology (3 second blocktimes, huge scaling ability, easy to use named accounts, account recovery, multiple levels of security keys, etc) AND it does something useful... that to me is huge.

@lukestokes, that's a really nice writeup about Steemit and its "reason for being."

For me, the biggest and best sales pitch we have is that-- unlike most alt coins-- Steem has Steemit attached to it, an understandable thing for the everyday person. It also happens to differentiate us because it creates an authentic "economic reason" for Steem (the currency) to exist which something very few of the 100s of other coins have to offer.

Even so, we must remain patient and allow for the somewhat slower organic growth that will create a solid community. I like the further initiatives in the works to further support "economic reasons" for Steem... the "SteemShop" and PeerHub, for example. If we can show the world that there's an actual economy here, that should also be very interesting to investors, and that'll increase the chances of that moonshot. "Differentiation" is a super valuable commodity in an ocean of lookalikes and wannabes.

Resteeming!

Thank you! When a full economy develops within this community, that's when things will really get amazing.

I see the value in steemit just as you do, but its still an uphill battle for me to explain the cryptocurrency aspect of it to friends I would like to join. I try to convince them just to join based on the social media aspect of it and they worry about the digital currency part of it being associated with some kind of evil black magic. I will figure out a good way to get them on board eventually, its just a battle to come up with the right way to do it.

Check out the 17 minute video I linked to in my post (and the lecture after that). Those two videos, I think, are really good.

Honestly I see its potential, but unfortunately some of my friends didn't see at that way. For them, writing it's not a job, it's just a hobbie, but for me is both because you must do research before writing something, specially if you are writing a novel.

I resteem it! :)

Thank you for the resteem!

I do think there are some interesting motivational psychology aspects involved. From what I've seen, creative work decreases when there's an external motivator. Some might argue that could happen here. For me, I do it for myself and the enjoyment I get out of it. Writing and connecting with others is valuable to me. Gaining cryptocurrency in the process is that added bump that motivates me to keep doing it consistently. It's not my primary motivation at all, but it aligns with my intrinsic motivators which are already working.

Nicely laid out, Luke, a very logical presentation. I hope this gets some distribution, tweets, etc. Here on Steemit it is basically "preaching to the choir."

I'll pass this along, for sure... ;)

😄😇😄

@creatr

Thank you. I haven't really done a full-blown Steemit advertisement post other than a couple videos early on. This is the post I'll share with people as to why I think Steemit is important.

That ranking you mentioned. I think that might be the golden ticket for Steemit.
We need a promotion.
Like in Charlie and the Chocalate Factory the ticket was sought over and the world became obsessed with Wonka.
What if we held a contest. A handful of members are selected to hide riddles in old edited blogs. The winner(s) get a pile of Steem if they find it. This will drive traffic as users pour through pages and pages of posts.

This will also enable old quality content to be tilled up and outright discovered.
Offering it as a contest (for say a thousand or ten thousand dollar prize in steem) for users young and old this will turn the cryptoworld/Internet on its ear.
Bloggers and writers will spend hours writing about how gutsy and amazing we are for opening up the doors and thrusting ourselves into the spot light.
Let's make it happen.

Sounds like a pretty cool idea. Maybe create a #growth-idea proposal?

Good luck!

Thanks! I think I'm going to do an ongoing series about this. Maybe with videos.

I just might. Pulling out laptop now. Easier to work on then my phone.

yes and. followed. just one example of connecting. you dont know me. i dont know you. what you hobbies outside steemit? for this is a olace to share them. or perhaps steemit is most rewarding if we just steem about steemit. i not know. ty for post.

Thanks @jacobts. Outside of Steemit, I like playing table top games with my wife and kids, listening to audiobooks and studying stuff like neuroscience, psychology, philosophy, AI, etc.

super thanks for sharing. cheers to you and your intelligent family.

Steemit is gonna be the best social platform for the globe.

Sounds good to me. :)

I have thought about this. All of us early ish adopters will be quite well off if we havent cashed out. Magic stuff

I like to think I've made the right move by powering up and not selling this whole time. That said, there were definitely some moments where I could have sold and bought back in at a much lower price. Time will tell what the best strategy is.

Time will indeed, I think we will be in an entirely different place this time next year and in a good way.

Excellent article. I'm also in for the long haul there is just too much potential here. And it already works today.

Thanks @exyle. :) I agree, there's so much value here on so many levels.

It's about time @lukestokes hope more people will see it that way. How to get more people involved here on @Steemit - What do you do?

Just keep consistently creating and sharing valuable content. Eventually, I think, enough articles on Steemit will be seen to the point where others want to join up and get involved. It takes time to overthrow the other social media giants, but I think we can do it.

I totally agree with you @lukestokes and I am up for it and doing it every day

""mooning" has no relation to dropping trow" lol
EXCELLENT POST! Will be sharing this on all my social profiles. 👍

Perfect! That's why I wrote this post. I wanted something I could share with anyone who I think may benefit from Steemit.

Great Contribution for the community ! Thank you !!

Thank you! I hope it's helpful for others like myself who want to have a post they can share to explain why there's value here.

Thank you !

I´m having a hard hard time finding some1 who I feel is contributing to a community. I need to find writers like you. Keep up the good work buddy! Following.

Thank you, I'm honored! I say this often, but the value of a social media platform really comes down to who you follow. Good luck!

Hey @lukestokes you're on fire! Great post with a great message and an even greater vibe!

I'm glad that you're on our team because if we go to the moon we're all going there together!

Thank you! I'm all about hitting the moon. That would be quite nice.

I haven't been here for several months. - Is there any alternative client (other than steemit.com) for the steem network yet?

I have the feeling that there should be more than one interface to the system, when that happens (imho) the network (and also the underlying currency) have a chance to bloom.

I think more will come in the future, now that there's a financial incentive to create them since the last hardfork. When you use those platforms, the creators get a small piece of the rewards pool. That also creates incentive for steemit.com to continue innovating and improving. It's a win-win all around.

Yeah, I've begun to dive back in. Quite a lot of good stuff goin' on here. 👍

There are a few obstacles to Steemit adoptions. Firstly, people haven't heard of it, so it needs publicity. When they do we need to explain that it's not a scam.

The site could look better, but we have some alternatives that may be better for new users. There's just a danger of confusion over the 'brand'.

Recently some people have had issues signing up due to how the SP is allocated. That needs to be resolved permanently. Obscure error messages will put them off.

I think Steem and Steemit could change the world. We can help it do that.

How to get more people involved here on @Steemit - What do you do? @steevc

I'll talk to people about it and post about it elsewhere. I just have to avoid spamming them. I don't have a massive following anywhere, so my influence is fairly limited. I have brought in a few people so far. It may just take a few big names to make Steemit go viral. One issue is that people have got comfortable with FB etc being all they need. It's amazing how quickly that has happened.

Then I see something like Mastodon grow from nothing to half a million in a couple of weeks. There is a hunger for alternatives.

I tried this too but with not much success

It can be hard. We can show that it really pays and that you can take the money out. You would think that creative people would jump on board. There's also the fact that there are no ads to distract people and it's censorship resistant. It deserves to succeed.

There will always be obstacles because software is never done, it's just shipped.

I know all about that, but it can reach a stage where it's 99% done until you want more features. Obviously Steemit works as it is, but it's lacking whatever it needs to reach the next level. I've seen sites that keep the beta tag for years.

More purpose. I should to resteem!
Thanks @lukestokes

Thank you! The more eyeballs we reach, the better.

Agreed...mostly.
Flaggin is wrong and needed to be removed from Steemd. I, personally, have seen a few 'noobs' run off by malicous flaggers. I provides no positive benifit not provided my mute.

'bots. Robot harvesters are a scourge. I'm sure you know that of all they 'votes' that you recieve, you only get a tiny percentage of 'views' to go with them. That not 'curation'. that's haravesting. It too ill serves the community as a whole.

Downvotes are necessary to fight abuse. While you can filter yourself by muting, that doesn't prevent the abuser from taking rewards out.
Also, there is no such thing as a "malicious flagger" (except if it's combined with an abuse of the reputation system). People have reasons that aren't necessarily obvious. A flag costs the flagger money too, she could have received curation rewards for upvoting something else instead.

Flaggin IS abuse, it prevents nothing other than free speech..
There most definitely are malicious flaggers...one calls himself the 'bad whale'. and does so out of spite. He just likes to hurt people.

I won't repeat what I wrote before, I explained why downvotes are necessary. Your claims are bullshit.

Bernie calling himself the "'OG' bad whale" is sarcasm, because dan called him like that once.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinon
No one is entitled to their own facts.
YOUR claims is bovine excretion. Flags are wrong.

Well, then argue. Just being against something is easy. Ever tried being constructive?
What's your suggestion on how to prevent rewards for spammers/plagiarizers/etc. if not by opposing upvotes?

what gives you the right to steal?

Flagging (or downvoting) is a complicated subject which I've addressed before. I agree, some people see a flag, think they did something wrong, and don't come back.

As for bots, I have a lot of mixed feelings about that. I wrote a piece against unmonitored automatic voting (follow voting) and I've done some experiments with bot voting vs. human voting. That said, I'm not ready to call it harvesting. I also think there needs to be incentive to hold Steem Power and those who have it can do with it as they wish. I'm currently using Steem Voter to support a handful of authors and friends who I think regularly bring real value to Steemit. Before, I'd miss some of their posts and be sad that I didn't vote them up in time. Now that the voting window is longer, a good case could be made that there's time to catch them all, but I still like the idea of using my Steem Power to support authors I like. That means I don't read every single post and sometimes it means I have to go remove a vote if it's a post I don't really like. If, however, those authors usually provide valuable content to the community, I think it's a good thing to consistently support them, whether that's done automatically or manually.

I'm not claiming STEEM is the next bitcoin in terms of increasing value

I am. Steem will exceed Bitcoin market cap within 3 years and go way beyond it in the long run.

I also believe Bitcoin is in the process of failing as we speak.

That's quite a claim! Bitcoin is up over $1,343 right now. Not exactly failing. I think solutions and agreements will be had and the bitcoin price will go even higher.

Bitcoin is up over $1,343 right now. Not exactly failing.

To that I say...

Bitcoin may be in a bubble, but if it is, I have a hunch that bubble will go much higher and when it pops, it'll land on a higher price than we're seeing today. What are the alternatives? Gold? Silver? Stocks? Real Estate? People want to have a liquid place to securely store their wealth and cryptocurrencies are great for that. Could bitcoin see serious competition from the altcoins? For sure! That said, the superior technology doesn't always win when it comes to network effect.

I disagree. I think Bitcoin is in its last bubble and will end up lower than where it is today, because the 'store of value' idea of Bitcoin is unsustainable without transactional utility, and Bitcoin has reached the peak of its transactional utility (where any more transactions mean higher fees and longer wait times). We have allowed Bitcoin to become the Ponzi scheme its early critics said it was.

The "solutions" aren't coming, except in the form of altcoins.

People may see Bitcoin as a safe haven in a crisis. If so, those people will unfortunately be ruined.

The "solutions" aren't coming, except in the form of altcoins.

Do you think all the money invested in bitcoin via miners, payment gateway providers, exchanges which use BTC as the base currency, etc will just watch as their value goes to nothing? Open source software can and will be changed when the motivational pressure is high enough to do so.

The great thing about this is we don't have to speculate or argue, we can just sit back and watch. I'd be very surprised if those highly invested in bitcoin just watch it falter without acting rationally to improve the protocol with any of the suggestions which have already been proposed and are being tested.

Do you think all the money invested in bitcoin via miners, payment gateway providers, exchanges which use BTC as the base currency, etc will just watch as their value goes to nothing?

Yes, people let things fall apart and do nothing all the time. That is what they did for over 2 years between 2014 and 2016. By the time it genuinely goes to 0, another coin such as Ethereum will already have a superior network effect. They may finally fix things, but they'll have lost the dominant position. Without the dominant position Bitcoin has literally 0 advantage over alts.

Think about it this way. Do you think Nokia/MySpace/Kodak will sit back and do nothing as their company falls apart while a competitor takes the lead? Every one of those was bogged down by internal politics similar to Bitcoin at present, and they all failed to adapt when the crisis hit.

I agree with you I see a future with steemit and believe it is a game changer. But what happens if they turn off the internet or the grid goes down? How will we recover our wallets?

Your wallet is controlled by your private key. Hopefully you have multiple backups of that. As for the Internet going down, there are interesting ideas out there like mesh networks and such. I think it will become more decentralized as time goes on. If the grid fails, hopefully we can move to solar.

MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!!!!!

Very much appreciated, thank you!

Excellent post! I like your work My friend

Thank you so much. :)

can you tell me a bit about TBC-The Billion Coin and its authenticity?it will be nice @lukestokes

I've never heard of it. Kind of looks like a scam to me, at first glance. Be careful. My suggestion would be to stay away.

Thank You.....

Well said

Great post! You expressed the situation quite elegantly. #meetup organizers, #activists, #entrepreneurs take note!
